PART 11 – The Man Who Looked Like My Father Had Been Living Under Another Name, and His Final Message Changed Who We Believed Was Behind Everything

The voice on the phone stayed in my head.

You finally found the wrong Medina.

I couldn't stop thinking about it.

My father had a brother.

Samuel.

He had disappeared decades earlier.

Someone had impersonated my father after his death.

And somehow that person knew exactly when I would discover the truth.

The prosecutor immediately ordered a trace on the call.

Nothing.

The number had been routed through several systems.

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“We need the original.”

“Why?”

“Because photographs can be manipulated.”

Miriam shook her head.

“I saw that man years ago.”

“Where?”

“Outside the office.”

“When?”

“After your father died.”

I looked at her.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid of Samuel.”

The prosecutor frowned.

“Why?”

Miriam's voice became quiet.

“Because he wasn't simply hiding.”

“What was he doing?”

“He was building a second identity.”

My stomach tightened.

“Using my father's name?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Elena spoke from the bed.

“I do.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He wanted the trust.”

“How?”

“He believed your father had stolen it from him.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“He believed the trust should have belonged to him.”

Miriam nodded.

“Samuel thought your father had taken everything.”

“My father was protecting me.”

“Samuel didn't believe that.”

The prosecutor asked, “How did Samuel know about Elena?”

Miriam answered.

“He had people watching the family.”

“Arthur?”

“Possibly.”

“Daniel?”

“Possibly.”

The uncertainty was becoming unbearable.

We needed evidence.

Not guesses.

Marcus suggested searching the old family records.

My lawyer contacted an archive service.

Within hours, they found a birth record.

Samuel Medina.

Same parents.

Same date.

Twin brother.

The record showed he had left the country at twenty-four.

No death certificate.

No confirmed return.

Then they found a second document.

A passport issued under another surname.

Samuel had used the name Samuel Reyes.

The same surname appeared in several corporate filings.

I looked at the documents.

One company stood out.

The fiduciary corporation listed on the guardianship petition.

I felt cold.

“Samuel owns it.”

The prosecutor nodded.

“Apparently.”

Everything changed.

Daniel wasn't the final authority.

Arthur wasn't the final authority.

The company wasn't independent.

Samuel controlled the company.

But why had Daniel cooperated?

The answer came when Daniel was brought into custody.

He refused to speak at first.

Then he asked for me.

I met him in a secure interview room.

“You knew about Samuel.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he threatened my family.”

“You destroyed mine.”

Daniel looked down.

“I know.”

“You used Arthur.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated Elena.”

“Yes.”

“You arranged my divorce.”

“I provided the information.”

“You knew it was false.”

“Yes.”

I leaned forward.

“Why?”

“Because Samuel believed that if you remained married, Elena would eventually reveal the trust.”

“Why was he so afraid of me?”

“Because the trust could only be challenged by you.”

I understood.

The entire scheme depended on keeping me ignorant.

Daniel had done everything necessary to preserve that ignorance.

“Where is Samuel?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“Then why are you cooperating?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I finally realized he intended to kill me.”

I said nothing.

“He sent Arthur to frighten me.”

“Arthur was your employee.”

“Not anymore.”

“What changed?”

“I refused to destroy the original records.”

I stared at him.

“The suitcase.”

“Yes.”

“You took it.”

“To keep Samuel from getting it.”

“Then why did you meet me?”

“Because I couldn't protect the evidence alone.”

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

“Samuel has people everywhere.”

“What does he want now?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“Because you have the trust.”

I shook my head.

“No. Elena does.”

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“Not anymore.”

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?”

“The moment Elena signed the transfer to you, control moved.”

I thought about the documents.

My name.

Sophia.

The trust.

Daniel continued.

“You became the counselor.”

I stared at him.

That explained the message.

The attacks.

The urgency.

The guardianship petition.

Samuel no longer needed Elena.

He needed me.

And Sophia.

I returned to the hospital.

Elena was awake.

“You transferred the trust.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To protect Sophia.”

She nodded.

“I knew you would.”

I sat beside her.

“I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“If something happens to you, who becomes Sophia's legal guardian?”

“You.”

“And if something happens to me?”

She hesitated.

“I named Miriam.”

I looked toward Miriam.

She nodded.

“I agreed.”

That gave me some comfort.

Not enough.

But some.

Then the lights flickered.

The hospital alarms sounded.

Everyone froze.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

A nurse ran into the room.

“The power system has failed.”

Emergency lighting came on.

Sophia was asleep in a nearby room.

I moved toward her.

Then I heard a sound.

A door closing.

Someone was inside the corridor.

Marcus ran ahead.

A figure disappeared around the corner.

I followed.

We reached the stairwell.

The door slammed.

Marcus opened it.

No one.

But a small envelope lay on the floor.

My name.

Inside was a photograph.

Sophia.

Sleeping.

Taken minutes earlier.

I felt sick.

The photograph had been taken inside the hospital.

The person was still nearby.

Marcus looked around.

“Move.”

We returned to Sophia.

She was safe.

For the moment.

Then Elena's monitor began alarming.

Doctors rushed in.

Her blood pressure had dropped again.

I stood helplessly as they worked.

Sophia woke crying.

“Daddy?”

I picked her up.

“I'm here.”

“What's happening?”

“Mommy needs the doctors.”

She buried her face against my chest.

I held her tightly.

After twenty minutes, the doctors stabilized Elena.

She opened her eyes.

“Carlos.”

“Yes?”

“Take Sophia away from the hospital.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel knows where we are.”

“I won't leave you.”

“You have to.”

“No.”

She reached for my hand.

“If you stay, he can use me.”

“He already has.”

“Then don't give him another chance.”

I looked at her.

She was right.

We arranged a secure transfer.

Sophia and I were taken to a protected residence.

Miriam went with us.

Marcus stayed with Elena.

Before leaving, I kissed Elena's forehead.

“I'll come back.”

She whispered, “I believe you.”

For the first time in years, I believed myself too.

We arrived at the safe house shortly after midnight.

Sophia fell asleep immediately.

Miriam sat across from me.

“You need to know something.”

“What?”

“Samuel isn't the person who started this.”

I stared at her.

“Then who did?”

She opened the red suitcase.

There was a hidden compartment we had missed.

Inside was a second notebook.

She placed it on the table.

The handwriting was not my father's.

Not Daniel's.

Not Elena's.

The first page contained one sentence.

The Medina trust was created to protect a secret that should never have belonged to the Medinas.

I looked at Miriam.

“What secret?”

She turned the page.

A name appeared.

Elena's father.

I froze.

Miriam whispered, “Your families were connected long before you and Elena ever met.”
