PART 7 – Daniel Voss Offered Me the Truth About My Father but Demanded Sophia in Exchange for the Evidence He Stole

I wanted to call the police immediately.

Marcus stopped me.

“Wait.”

“Why?”

“Because if Daniel is carrying the suitcase, he has what we need.”

“And?”

“And he wants you to chase him.”

I stared at the photograph.

Daniel had spent years staying behind other people.

Now he had stepped into the light.

That frightened me more than anything Arthur had done.

“Where is he?”

Marcus showed me the location from the terminal camera system.

A marina.

Ten minutes away.

We went there with two officers.

Daniel was waiting beside a black sedan.

He didn't run.

He didn't even look surprised.

He simply watched us approach.

“Carlos.”

“You took the suitcase.”

“Yes.”

“Give it back.”

He smiled faintly.

“You still think this is about the suitcase.”

“What is it about?”

“You.”

I stopped.

Daniel looked older than he had in the photograph.

His hair was gray at the temples.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Measured.

“You have your father's face,” he said.

“I don't remember you.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

“What does that mean?”

He glanced at the officers.

“I want to speak privately.”

“No.”

“Then you'll never learn why your father trusted me.”

“My father didn't trust you.”

“He did.”

Daniel opened the trunk.

The red suitcase was inside.

“I'll give you everything.”

“Why?”

“Because the people who hired me want the evidence destroyed.”

“Who?”

He smiled.

“You already know the word.”

Counselor.

My stomach tightened.

“Who is Counselor?”

Daniel closed the trunk.

“Not a person.”

“You said that before.”

“It is a position.”

“Within what?”

“Your family's trust.”

I stared at him.

He explained that the trust had a controlling administrator.

A counselor.

That person could approve transfers, investments, and emergency actions.

For years, Daniel had served as an intermediary.

But he wasn't the only person involved.

“Who appointed the counselor?”

“Your father.”

“Who is it now?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Your ex-wife.”

I felt as though someone had struck me.

“Elena?”

“She inherited the appointment.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

“Because she didn't know.”

I didn't understand.

“She knew enough to hide everything else.”

“Your father arranged it so the counselor would not know her identity until a specific condition was met.”

“What condition?”

“The birth of your first child.”

I thought of Sophia.

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

I looked toward the hospital.

“You're saying Sophia triggered something?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Control of the trust.”

My hands went cold.

Daniel continued.

“Your father expected you to have children. He wanted the trust protected from outside influence. He created a succession clause.”

“And Elena became the counselor because she was carrying my child.”

“Yes.”

“But why would Daniel want her?”

“Because whoever controls the counselor controls the trust.”

I understood.

Arthur hadn't been trying to marry Elena because he loved her.

He had been trying to control the person who could eventually control the trust.

But there was still something missing.

“What about me?”

Daniel looked at me.

“You were the problem.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust also required your consent once you learned of Sophia.”

I stared at him.

“If I never knew about her?”

“The trust remained dormant.”

“And if I learned?”

“You could challenge the transfers.”

“So you needed me absent.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity of his answer terrified me.

“You arranged the divorce.”

Daniel didn't answer.

“Did you?”

“I provided information.”

“What information?”

“That Elena had been seeing someone.”

My stomach dropped.

“There was no one.”

“I know.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my marriage.”

Daniel looked at me without emotion.

“I prevented you from becoming a liability.”

I wanted to hit him.

Instead, I stepped closer.

“You ruined four years of my life.”

“You were alive.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

For the first time, his expression changed.

Maybe he understood.

Maybe he didn't.

“Where is the evidence?”

He opened the suitcase.

Inside were folders.

Bank records.

Trust documents.

Photographs.

Medical records.

And one envelope.

Elena's name.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter written by my father.

Carlos,

If you ever read this, I failed to protect you in the way I intended.

I stared at the page.

My father's handwriting was unmistakable.

He explained that he had discovered Daniel was redirecting assets.

He had tried to stop him.

But by then, the system was too complicated.

He feared Daniel would retaliate against me.

So he created the counselor clause.

He believed Elena would eventually protect the trust.

He never knew she would become sick.

He never knew Sophia would be hidden.

He never knew the divorce would happen.

I read until my vision blurred.

Then I saw one sentence.

If my son ever discovers the truth, he must never allow anyone to separate him from his child.

I folded the letter.

Daniel watched me.

“Where is Elena?”

“At the hospital.”

“Then you should return.”

“Why?”

“Because Arthur isn't your real problem.”

I froze.

“What happened to him?”

Daniel looked toward the water.

“He was a messenger.”

“Whose?”

“Someone higher.”

“Who?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled out his phone.

A photograph appeared.

Arthur sitting inside a car.

Beside him was a woman.

Elena.

My blood ran cold.

The photograph had been taken years earlier.

Before Arthur worked at the hotel.

Before Sophia was born.

“What is this?”

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

“That Arthur knew Elena before she thought she met him.”

I stared at the photograph.

Elena had told me Arthur entered her life after she moved to Miami.

But the photograph proved otherwise.

There was another image.

Arthur standing beside Miriam.

Another.

Arthur with Daniel.

And another.

Arthur outside my old office.

This wasn't one man.

It was a network.

Daniel closed the phone.

“You need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Arthur was assigned to monitor Elena.”

“By you?”

“No.”

“Then by whom?”

Daniel looked toward the hospital.

“Ask your ex-wife.”

I returned to the hospital.

Elena was awake.

I put the photograph on her bed.

She stared at it.

Her face changed.

“You knew him.”

She didn't answer.

“You knew Arthur before Miami.”

Her lips trembled.

“I met him once.”

“When?”

“Before our divorce.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he was already asking about you.”

“What did he want?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why did you keep him close?”

“I didn't.”

“He worked with you.”

“He followed me.”

“Why didn't you report him?”

“I tried.”

“To whom?”

She looked toward the ceiling.

“Daniel.”

My stomach dropped.

“You trusted Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then why contact him?”

“Because I thought he was trying to stop Arthur.”

I sat beside her.

“Elena, you have to tell me everything.”

She closed her eyes.

“I wasn't the only one hiding something.”

“What does that mean?”

“I knew about the trust.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“I knew the trust existed before Sophia was born.”

I waited.

“I also knew your father had appointed me.”

My heart sank.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you still kept me away.”

“I thought if you knew, Daniel would come after you.”

“He came after me anyway.”

Tears ran down her face.

“I know.”

She reached toward me.

I didn't pull away.

“I was wrong.”

It was the first time she had said those words without qualification.

I held her hand.

Then the door opened.

A police officer stepped inside.

“Mr. Medina?”

“Yes?”

“We need you to come with us.”

“Why?”

He looked at Elena.

“Arthur Hale has escaped custody.”

My grip tightened around Elena's hand.

The officer continued.

“And he took something from the evidence room.”

“What?”

The officer's expression hardened.

“The original guardianship documents.”

I looked toward Sophia.

She was asleep in the corner.

Arthur wasn't trying to recover his reputation.

He was trying to recover access to my daughter.

And this time, he knew exactly where she was.
