PART 12 – Elena’s Family Had Been Connected to My Father’s Trust for Decades, and the Final Evidence Pointed Toward One Last Betrayal

I read Elena's father's name again.

Then again.

It was the same name that appeared on an old document in my father's files.

I had seen it before.

I simply hadn't understood its importance.

“What did Elena's father have to do with my family?”

Miriam sat across from me.

“Everything.”

Sophia was sleeping in the next room.

The safe house was quiet except for the air conditioner.

For the first time in days, there were no hospital monitors.

No police radios.

No footsteps outside the door.

Yet I felt less safe than ever.

Miriam opened the notebook.

“Your father and Elena's father worked together.”

“On what?”

“An investment fund.”

“What kind?”

“Private assets.”

“How much?”

“Enough to destroy both families if the truth became public.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because some of the money came from people who should never have had access to it.”

“Criminal money?”

“Some of it.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“And my father?”

“He tried to separate himself from it.”

“Then why did he create the trust?”

“To protect the assets that could legally be protected.”

“And Elena's father?”

“He wanted everything.”

“What happened?”

“They fought.”

“When?”

“Years before you were born.”

Miriam explained that the two men had built a financial network together.

At first, it was legitimate.

Then Elena's father began taking risks.

He moved money through private accounts.

He borrowed against investments.

He used other people's assets as collateral.

My father discovered what he had done.

He wanted out.

Elena's father threatened him.

That was when the trust was created.

My father moved legitimate family assets into it.

He named me as beneficiary.

Then he created the counselor role.

But there was another clause.

If the beneficiary married someone connected to the original investment network, the counselor would temporarily control the trust.

I stared at Miriam.

“Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Her family was connected.”

“Yes.”

“So if I married her—”

“The trust would become restricted.”

I felt sick.

“You're saying our marriage triggered the problem.”

“No.”

Miriam looked at me.

“Your marriage was the solution your father intended.”

I didn't understand.

“He trusted Elena's family?”

“No.”

“He wanted me to marry her?”

“He wanted you to trust her.”

“Why?”

“Because Elena's father had left something behind.”

“What?”

“A record of every illegal transaction.”

I looked at the notebook.

“Where?”

Miriam shook her head.

“Your father believed Elena would eventually find it.”

“Did she?”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“Because the record implicated her father.”

I stopped.

Elena had spent years protecting her family.

Just as I had protected the memory of mine.

We had both been carrying secrets we thought were protecting the other.

I sat down again.

“What happened to Elena's father?”

“He died.”

“How?”

“Suicide.”

The word hung in the room.

“Was it really?”

Miriam looked at me.

“We don't know.”

I felt the story narrowing toward its center.

The hospital.

Arthur.

Daniel.

Samuel.

The trust.

The divorce.

All of them were connected to one thing.

A missing record.

“Where is it?”

Miriam opened the suitcase again.

“There is one place we haven't searched.”

“Where?”

“Elena's old apartment.”

“Someone searched it.”

“They searched the bedroom.”

“What did they miss?”

“The kitchen.”

I looked at her.

“That sounds impossible.”

“Your father hid things where people don't look.”

We returned to Elena's apartment with police protection.

The place was still under evidence control.

Marcus met us.

“The officers cleared the entrance.”

We entered.

The kitchen was untouched.

Miriam went straight to a cabinet.

She removed a wooden drawer.

Then another.

Nothing.

She frowned.

“Your father told me the record was hidden behind a false wall.”

“Where?”

She tapped the tile.

One sounded hollow.

Marcus removed it.

Behind it was a metal box.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a bundle of papers.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Signatures.

At the bottom was one photograph.

My father.

Elena's father.

Daniel.

Samuel.

And another man.

Arthur.

I stared at the photograph.

Arthur was much younger.

He couldn't have been more than twenty.

“What is he doing there?”

Miriam looked at the date.

“Working for Samuel.”

I felt cold.

Arthur hadn't entered Elena's life randomly.

He had been connected to the family for decades.

He had known about the trust.

He had known about Sophia.

He had known about me.

Then I saw something else.

A letter.

My father's handwriting.

It was addressed to Elena.

Not me.

I opened it.

Elena,

If Carlos ever marries you, I need you to understand one thing.

Do not tell him about the trust until Sophia is born.

I stared at the page.

The instruction had been deliberate.

My father had planned for Elena to hide the truth from me.

Not because he wanted to hurt me.

Because he believed knowledge would put me in danger.

The next sentence changed everything.

If the child is a girl, the trust will become active immediately.

Sophia.

My daughter had been central to the plan from the beginning.

I kept reading.

But if anyone attempts to control Elena through the trust, Carlos must know that the real danger is not Daniel.

I turned the page.

The next name was Samuel.

Then another line.

Samuel will not act alone.

There was one final sentence.

The person closest to Carlos will be the one he trusts least when the truth emerges.

I stopped.

Marcus looked at me.

“What?”

I handed him the letter.

He read it.

His expression changed.

“The person closest to you.”

I thought of everyone.

Elena.

Miriam.

Daniel.

My mother.

Claire.

Someone had betrayed us.

But who?

Then my phone rang.

It was the prosecutor.

“Carlos, where are you?”

I told her.

“Listen carefully.”

“What happened?”

“Claire disappeared.”

My stomach dropped.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“Was she under arrest?”

“She was cooperating.”

“Where was she?”

“In protective custody.”

I closed my eyes.

“Did she leave willingly?”

“No.”

The prosecutor lowered her voice.

“She was taken.”

“By whom?”

“We don't know.”

I looked at Miriam.

She was staring at the photograph.

“What did the cameras show?”

“There was a security blind spot.”

“Who knew about it?”

“Only hospital administration.”

I felt cold.

Claire.

The hospital.

The missing records.

The false petition.

Someone inside the hospital had helped.

But Claire had been taken.

That meant whoever was behind it didn't need her anymore.

The prosecutor continued.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Before Claire disappeared, she sent one message.”

“To whom?”

“To you.”

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

I opened it.

I know who the counselor is.

Then another message.

It isn't Elena.

Another.

It isn't Daniel.

Another.

And it isn't Samuel.

My hands went cold.

The final message arrived.

You have trusted her all along.

I looked at Miriam.

She was already looking at me.

“What?” she asked.

I couldn't answer.

Because I had suddenly remembered something.

On the first night I met Miriam, she had known my name before I introduced myself.

At the hospital, she had known exactly where Sophia would be.

She had known about the red suitcase.

She had known my father's handwriting.

She had known the location of the hidden box.

She had always known too much.

Miriam's expression changed when she saw my face.

“You figured it out.”

I stepped back.

“Who are you?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Carlos, please.”

“No.”

I heard my own voice shaking.

“You told me you were afraid of Samuel.”

“I am.”

“You told me you disappeared to protect yourself.”

“I did.”

“You knew about the trust before anyone else.”

“Yes.”

“You knew where everything was.”

She didn't answer.

“Who appointed you?”

Miriam looked toward the door.

Then she whispered the answer.

“Elena's father.”

The room went silent.

Before I could respond, my phone rang again.

This time, it was Elena.

I answered immediately.

Her voice was barely audible.

“Carlos.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

My heart stopped.

“What happened?”

“I woke up somewhere else.”

“Are you hurt?”

“I don't think so.”

“Who has you?”

She breathed shakily.

“I saw her.”

“Who?”

A pause.

Then Elena whispered the words that turned every assumption upside down.

“Your mother.”
