The community board held its first meeting three months later.
Daniel sat at the end of the long table.
There were nine members.
Residents.
Employees.
Two former trustees.
A local legal adviser.
And representatives from the surrounding properties.
The resort's future was discussed openly.
No locked doors.
No private recordings.
No hidden agendas.
At least, that was the intention.
Halfway through the meeting, a woman raised her hand.
“I have a question about Room 208.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What about it?”
“My family lost land twenty years ago.”
The room became quiet.
“We were told the paperwork was legitimate.”
Daniel nodded.
“It may not have been.”
“Then what happens to us?”
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
He had learned that promises made too quickly could become another form of deception.
“We investigate each claim.”
“And if the claim is valid?”
“We correct the record.”
The woman nodded.
It wasn't the answer she wanted.
But it was honest.
After the meeting, Daniel found Michael waiting outside.
“You handled that well.”
Daniel sighed.
“I almost said we'd fix everything.”
“But you didn't.”
“I've learned.”
Michael smiled.
“How is Elena?”
“Already planning another meeting.”
Daniel laughed.
“She hasn't changed.”
“No.”
Michael looked toward the resort.
“Neither have you.”
Daniel frowned.
“I'm not sure that's good.”
“It is.”
Then Michael became serious.
“There's something you need to see.”
They walked to the old administration office.
Michael opened a drawer.
Inside was a sealed evidence envelope.
Daniel stared.
“Where did that come from?”
“Samuel found it.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a handwritten statement.
Arthur had written it years before.
It described payments made by Victor.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Everything.
Daniel read the final page.
One line was underlined.
Victor was not acting alone.
Daniel looked at Michael.
“We knew that.”
“No.”
Michael pointed lower.
Daniel read the next sentence.
The person directing Victor is not an investor.
Daniel's heart sank.
“Then who?”
Michael shook his head.
The final name was written clearly.
Graham Bell.
Daniel stared.
“That can't be.”
Michael looked grim.
“Elias says it's impossible.”
“Then why is it here?”
“We don't know.”
They found Elias in the records room.
Daniel placed the statement in front of him.
He read it.
His face changed.
“This is forged.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Graham died before Arthur wrote this.”
Michael looked at him.
“When?”
“Two years before.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then someone forged Arthur's statement.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Elias looked at the evidence.
“To make us distrust each other.”
Daniel remembered the videos.
His mother's recording.
Elias appearing behind her.
The amendment.
Arthur claiming someone else was controlling him.
Someone had been manipulating information.
Perhaps not Victor.
Perhaps not Arthur.
Someone who understood exactly how fear worked.
Daniel asked, “Who had access to these files?”
Elias hesitated.
“Everyone on the old legal team.”
“Names.”
Elias gave them six.
One name made Michael stop.
“Graham's son.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Who?”
“Lucas Bell.”
Daniel recognized the surname.
“Where is he?”
Elias shook his head.
“Unknown.”
Michael looked at the evidence.
“Then we aren't finished.”
That night, Daniel returned to Room 208.
He found Elena sitting on the balcony.
“You knew I'd come.”
She smiled.
“I guessed.”
He sat beside her.
He told her everything.
She listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she asked, “Do you think someone is still trying to take the resort?”
“I don't know.”
“Do you think we should be afraid?”
Daniel looked at the dark grounds below.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because this time, we're not hiding.”
Elena smiled.
“That sounds like something your grandfather would say.”
Daniel laughed.
“I never met him.”
“You've met his decisions.”
That sentence stayed with him.
The next morning, Daniel called the board.
The new investigation began.
They traced Lucas Bell.
He had worked for several development companies.
None had any obvious connection to Victor.
But one company appeared repeatedly.
It was registered under a different name.
Daniel recognized the address.
The old marina office.
The same building where Arthur had been photographed.
Daniel went there with Michael and Elias.
The office was empty.
Dust covered the desks.
But someone had been there recently.
A chair had been moved.
A coffee cup remained warm.
Daniel looked around.
“Someone left in a hurry.”
Michael opened a cabinet.
Inside was a file.
The label read:
ROOM 208.
Daniel opened it.
The first page contained a photograph.
It showed his grandfather.
The second showed Michael's father.
The third showed Daniel's mother.
The fourth showed Lucas Bell.
And the fifth showed Daniel himself.
Taken only weeks earlier.
Daniel stared.
“He's been watching us.”
Elias nodded.
Michael looked toward the door.
“Then he's close.”
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Daniel turned.
The door opened.
A young man stood there.
He looked exhausted.
“Daniel Reed?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Lucas Bell.”
Nobody moved.
Lucas raised both hands.
“I know what this looks like.”
Michael stared at him.
“You're Graham's son.”
“Yes.”
“Why were you following us?”
Lucas looked at the file.
“I wasn't following you.”
“Then who?”
Lucas swallowed.
“My father.”
Elias stepped forward.
“Your father is dead.”
Lucas shook his head.
“I know.”
“Then what do you mean?”
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“My father left instructions before he died.”
Daniel's pulse quickened.
“What instructions?”
“To protect the fifth trustee.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
Lucas answered quietly.
“Because the person who threatened the trust wasn't Victor.”
Michael's face hardened.
“Who was it?”
Lucas looked toward the window.
“The original trust had one beneficiary nobody ever listed publicly.”
Daniel felt the room go silent.
“Who?”
Lucas looked directly at him.
“You.”
