PART 12 – Room 208 Became the Meeting Place Again as Daniel Entered the Trap Knowing His Mother Was Waiting and Someone Else Was Pulling the Strings

The corridor outside Room 208 was empty.

Daniel walked first.

Michael followed.

Elias stayed several steps behind them.

Margaret had insisted on coming, despite Michael's objections.

The door stood open.

Daniel stopped.

“Mom?”

No answer.

He entered.

The room looked exactly as it had earlier that morning.

The bed was made.

The desk was empty.

The window stood open.

Palm leaves moved outside.

Daniel felt his pulse in his throat.

“Mom?”

Still nothing.

Michael walked toward the hidden panel.

“It could be downstairs.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She said she woke up here.”

He looked around.

“Then someone moved her.”

Elias closed the door.

“Don't.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“Look at the floor.”

A line of dust had been disturbed.

Someone had dragged something from beneath the bed.

Michael knelt.

There was a small metal key.

Daniel picked it up.

A number had been engraved on it.

417.

Margaret frowned.

“There is no Room 417.”

Elias looked at her.

“Not anymore.”

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?”

“The old building had four floors.”

“This building has three.”

“The fourth floor was removed during the renovation.”

Michael looked at him.

“Then where is it?”

“Above us.”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“The old fourth floor was sealed.”

“Why?”

Elias hesitated.

“Because someone died there.”

Daniel tightened his grip on the key.

“Who?”

“Arthur's partner.”

Michael looked at Margaret.

“You knew?”

“I knew there had been an accident.”

Elias shook his head.

“It wasn't an accident.”

The words settled over them.

Daniel looked at the key.

“Then that's where we're going.”

They left Room 208.

The old staircase had been sealed behind a locked door near the service corridor.

The key opened it.

Dust covered the steps.

Daniel climbed.

The air became colder.

At the top was a narrow hallway.

Four doors.

Three had been boarded shut.

One remained open.

417.

Daniel entered.

His mother was sitting in a chair.

Her hands were tied.

Daniel rushed toward her.

“Mom!”

She looked up.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

A voice came from behind him.

“Good.”

Arthur stepped from the shadows.

Daniel stared.

The older man looked almost exactly as he had in childhood memories.

Only thinner.

More tired.

“You.”

Arthur smiled.

“You remember me.”

Daniel's mother began crying.

Arthur looked at her.

“She tried to be brave.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

“The trust.”

“You can't have it.”

“I don't need all of it.”

Arthur looked toward Michael.

“I need one signature.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Mine?”

“No.”

Arthur pointed toward Daniel.

“His.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“Because the trust has changed.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

Arthur smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

He removed a document from his coat.

“This is the amendment.”

Daniel recognized the handwriting.

His mother's.

He read it.

If Daniel accepts the trusteeship, all existing restrictions remain.

But below it was another clause.

The trustee may authorize temporary development under exceptional circumstances.

Daniel looked up.

“This was added.”

“Yes.”

“By you.”

“No.”

Arthur smiled.

“By someone who wanted me to find it.”

Daniel felt the trap tightening.

“Who?”

Arthur's expression changed.

“You'll meet him soon.”

Michael stepped between Arthur and Daniel.

“Where is Elena?”

Arthur looked surprised.

“Why would I know?”

“She disappeared.”

“I didn't take her.”

Daniel looked at Michael.

“When?”

“This morning.”

Arthur shook his head.

“I've been here since yesterday.”

Elias moved toward the hallway.

“Then someone else is here.”

A door slammed downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Arthur looked toward the stairs.

“He found us.”

Daniel's mother whispered, “Who?”

Arthur's face went pale.

“Victor.”

Michael stared.

“That's impossible.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Daniel.

“Victor is not the man you should have been afraid of.”

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Heavy.

Then someone appeared at the top of the stairs.

It was the former resort security chief.

Michael recognized him immediately.

“You.”

The man raised both hands.

“I don't want trouble.”

Daniel stared.

“You worked for Victor.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here?”

The security chief looked toward Arthur.

“Because he paid me.”

Arthur swore.

The man continued.

“But I changed my mind.”

Michael frowned.

“Why?”

The security chief reached into his pocket.

He removed a phone.

“Because I found out what happened to Elena.”

Daniel's stomach dropped.

“Where is she?”

The man looked at him.

“Alive.”

“Where?”

“Downstairs.”

Daniel moved toward the stairs.

Michael stopped him.

“Wait.”

The security chief held up the phone.

“There is a video.”

He pressed play.

Elena appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in a chair.

Her hands were free.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, if you're watching this, don't trust Arthur.”

Arthur went still.

Elena continued.

“Don't trust the amendment.”

Michael stared.

Then Elena said something that changed everything.

“The person who arranged all of this isn't Arthur.”

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Her face had gone pale.

Elena continued.

“It is someone you already believe is helping you.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at Elias.

Elias looked at Margaret.

Michael looked at his mother.

Then at his father.

The room suddenly felt too small.

The security chief whispered, “There's more.”

He showed them another video.

This one was recorded earlier.

A woman entered Room 208.

Daniel watched.

The woman carried a folder.

She placed it beneath the floor.

Then she turned toward the camera.

Daniel recognized her.

His mother.

But she was not alone.

Someone stood behind her.

Daniel leaned closer.

The figure stepped into view.

His breath stopped.

It was Elias.

Daniel looked at the man standing in the room.

Elias was there.

Alive.

Watching him.

Daniel's voice barely came out.

“You?”

Elias closed his eyes.

Michael stepped backward.

“Tell me that's fake.”

Elias said nothing.

Daniel's mother began crying.

Arthur whispered, “Now you understand.”

Daniel stared at Elias.

The man who had spent months helping them.

The man who had preserved the evidence.

The man who had exposed Victor.

The man they had trusted.

Elias finally opened his eyes.

“I never wanted it to reach this point.”

Michael's face hardened.

“What did you do?”

Elias looked at Daniel.

“I protected the trust.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Elias's voice broke.

“I protected it from everyone.”

“From Victor?”

“Yes.”

“From Arthur?”

“Yes.”

“From us?”

Elias nodded.

Daniel felt something inside him collapse.

“Why?”

Elias looked toward the hidden stairway.

“Because your grandfather made me promise.”

Michael stared.

“What promise?”

Elias answered quietly.

“Never let the trust fall into the hands of a trustee who wanted power more than people.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

Then at the amendment.

Then at Elias.

“What are you going to do?”

Elias looked at the document.

“Make sure you never sign it.”

A loud crash came from below.

Everyone turned.

Elena's voice echoed up the stairwell.

“Daniel!”

He ran toward the stairs.

Michael followed.

At the bottom, Elena stood beside the chapel entrance.

She was safe.

But beside her was someone Daniel had never expected to see again.

His father.

And in his father's hand was the original trust agreement.

Complete.

Unaltered.

Daniel stopped halfway down the stairs.

His father looked at him.

“Now,” he said quietly, “you finally deserve to know why your mother and I lied to you.”
