The recording began with static.
Then Claire's voice.
If Mara is hearing this, then the archive has been opened.
Mara stood beside the old monitor at Saint Mary's clinic.
Arthur stood behind her.
Daniel had joined them.
Elena remained near the door.
Detective Morris listened carefully.
Claire's voice continued.
There are truths I kept from everyone because I believed silence would protect my children. I was wrong.
Mara closed her eyes.
Claire continued.
The man who created Northbridge's identity program is named Jonathan Bennett.
Daniel went pale.
Arthur whispered, “His father.”
Claire continued.
Jonathan is alive.
He has been living under another name for years.
He knows where Samuel is.
He knows where Elias is.
And he knows Mara.
Mara opened her eyes.
Daniel looked at her.
“I never knew he knew your name.”
Mara stared at him.
“Your father knew me?”
“I don't know.”
Claire's voice continued.
Jonathan believes children are assets.
He does not understand family.
He believes identity can be transferred like money.
Mara felt anger rise.
Claire continued.
If he ever approaches Mara, she must not negotiate.
She must not meet him alone.
And she must never give him the watch.
Mara touched the watch instinctively.
The recording paused.
Then Claire said something unexpected.
But there is something Jonathan doesn't know.
Elias is not the only proof.
Samuel is not the only witness.
There is another child.
Mara looked at Samuel's empty chair.
Another child.
The room became silent.
Claire continued.
Her name is Lily.
Mara stared.
“Another child?”
Daniel looked stunned.
“I never heard this.”
Arthur shook his head.
“Neither did I.”
Elena whispered, “I knew.”
Mara turned.
“You knew?”
“I knew there was another.”
“Where?”
Elena shook her head.
“I never knew her location.”
Claire continued.
Lily was born into the program. Her identity was changed before she was six months old. She carries the original archive in a form nobody would think to search for.
Morris frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The recording answered.
Her medical implant.
Mara felt cold.
Claire continued.
They used a small medical device during an unauthorized procedure. The device stores patient identifiers. If Lily is found, she can prove how many children were entered into the system.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel said, “We have to find her.”
Mara looked at him.
“Yes.”
Elena shook her head.
“Jonathan will be looking too.”
“Where?”
“He will know the moment we start searching.”
Morris turned toward the computer.
“Then we need to move quickly.”
Arthur looked at Mara.
“Do you know what Claire would want?”
Mara thought about it.
“For once, I think she would want us to stop hiding.”
They began searching.
The records showed Lily's original name.
Lillian Grace Carter.
No current address.
No current guardian.
No medical file.
Nothing.
Then Mara noticed a line at the bottom.
TRANSFERRED TO COMMUNITY HOME 7.
She looked at Morris.
“What is Community Home 7?”
Morris searched.
“Closed facility.”
“When?”
“Ten years ago.”
“Children?”
“Yes.”
“Records?”
“Missing.”
Mara looked at Elena.
“Could Lily have been there?”
“Yes.”
Arthur stepped closer.
“Then where did the children go?”
Elena looked frightened.
“Some were adopted.”
“Legally?”
“No.”
Mara felt sick.
“Then we need those records.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Jonathan destroyed them.”
“Not all.”
Mara looked at the watch.
“Claire said Lily carried the archive.”
Morris nodded.
“Then she may have left a trail.”
They spent the night searching old databases.
At dawn, they found a name.
Lily had been registered under a new identity.
Lillian Moore.
Age thirteen.
Living in a foster home outside London.
Mara stared at the screen.
“She survived.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Thank God.”
Arthur asked, “Does she know?”
“No.”
“Then someone needs to tell her.”
Mara shook her head.
“Not until we know she is safe.”
Morris agreed.
“We'll secure the location.”
They traveled that afternoon.
The foster home was a quiet brick building.
A social worker met them.
Lily was sitting in a garden.
She was thirteen.
Dark hair.
Thin face.
A small scar near her wrist.
Mara sat beside her.
“Hi.”
Lily looked suspicious.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Mara.”
“Why are you here?”
Mara glanced at Morris.
Then answered honestly.
“We found something that may be connected to your past.”
Lily's face tightened.
“I don't have a past.”
“Everyone does.”
“Mine is complicated.”
“I know.”
Lily looked at her.
“How?”
Mara handed her the photograph of Claire.
Lily stared.
“I've seen her.”
Mara's heart stopped.
“Where?”
“In a dream.”
Mara almost smiled.
“No. In real life.”
Lily looked confused.
“When I was little.”
Mara leaned closer.
“What do you remember?”
“A woman.”
“Claire?”
“I don't know her name.”
“What did she say?”
Lily closed her eyes.
“She said, ‘Don't let them take the watch.’”
Mara's hand moved to her wrist.
Lily stared.
“You have it.”
Mara nodded.
Lily began crying.
“She told me someone would come.”
Mara reached out.
“Who?”
Lily whispered:
“Your father.”
Mara froze.
“My father?”
Lily nodded.
“Jonathan Bennett.”
Mara looked at Daniel.
Daniel's face had gone white.
Lily continued.
“He came to the house.”
“When?”
“Two days ago.”
Morris stood.
“What did he look like?”
Lily described an older man.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
A silver ring.
Arthur stared.
“I know that ring.”
Everyone looked at him.
Arthur's voice was barely audible.
“It belonged to Daniel's mother.”
Mara looked at Daniel.
“Your father has been here.”
Daniel nodded.
“And he knows Lily.”
“Yes.”
Morris immediately called for security.
But Lily grabbed Mara's hand.
“He said he wasn't going to hurt me.”
“What did he want?”
“He wanted the watch.”
Mara's heart pounded.
“Did you give him anything?”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire told me never to trust him.”
Mara looked at her.
Claire had somehow prepared them all.
Across years.
Across different homes.
Across different names.
The same warning had survived.
Don't trust him.
Mara looked at the watch.
Then at Lily.
Then at Daniel.
“We need to find Jonathan before he finds us.”
A phone rang.
It belonged to Detective Morris.
She answered.
Her face changed.
“Where?”
She listened.
Then looked at Mara.
“Jonathan Bennett has surrendered.”
Mara stared.
“Where?”
“At the airport.”
The same airport where everything had begun.
