PART 4 – The Locker Held a Truth Arthur Had Buried for Years, and Mara Had to Decide Whether Protecting Eli Meant Trusting the Man She Feared

The question remained on Mara's phone.

ASK ARTHUR WHAT HAPPENED TO CLAIRE'S SON.

She looked at him.

Arthur looked back.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

The airport continued around them as if nothing had changed.

A boarding announcement echoed overhead.

A child laughed near a coffee shop.

Someone dropped a suitcase, and the sharp sound made Mara flinch.

Arthur finally said, “He was taken.”

“By whom?”

“I don't know.”

Mara's eyes narrowed.

“You knew this was coming.”

“No.”

“You knew someone would ask me about Claire's son.”

“I feared it.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

Arthur lowered his voice.

“Claire's son disappeared after she died.”

“How old was he?”

“Two.”

Mara looked at Eli.

“Exactly?”

“Yes.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Where was he?”

“With Daniel.”

“When?”

“The night Claire died.”

“And then?”

“Daniel claimed the child was taken to his parents.”

“You said Daniel disappeared.”

“He did.”

Mara stared.

“Then who took the child?”

Arthur's jaw tightened.

“That is what I've spent three years trying to discover.”

Mara held up her phone.

“Someone wants me to believe my son is Claire's son.”

Arthur looked at Eli.

“I don't know what to believe anymore.”

Mara stepped closer.

“Did you ever see Claire's child after she died?”

“No.”

“Did you have a photograph?”

Arthur nodded.

“Many.”

“Do you have one now?”

He reached for his wallet.

Mara stopped him.

“Not here.”

“Why?”

“Because we're being watched.”

Arthur looked around.

She was right.

A man near the information desk was pretending to read a newspaper.

A woman beside a vending machine had been standing in the same place for several minutes.

The airport suddenly felt like a room with invisible walls.

The security officer returned.

“We have the locker location.”

Mara looked at him.

“Number seventeen?”

“Yes.”

“What's inside?”

“We haven't opened it.”

“Why?”

“Because we want you present.”

Arthur looked at Mara.

“You don't have to do this.”

“I do.”

They walked toward the lockers.

Mara carried Eli.

Arthur pushed his blue suitcase behind them.

The officer walked slightly ahead.

At the end of a corridor, a row of metal lockers stood beneath a surveillance camera.

Mara inserted the key.

It turned easily.

She paused.

Arthur whispered, “Wait.”

She looked at him.

“Whatever is inside,” he said, “remember that you didn't put it there.”

Mara nodded.

She opened the door.

Inside was a small black case.

No name.

No label.

Just a red thread tied around the handle.

Arthur inhaled sharply.

Mara looked at him.

“What?”

He pointed.

“Claire used that.”

“What?”

“The red thread.”

“For what?”

Arthur shook his head.

“She tied it around things she wanted me to notice.”

Mara looked at the case.

Her fingers trembled.

The officer put on gloves.

He opened it.

Inside were three objects.

A photograph.

A USB drive.

And a folded hospital bracelet.

Mara stared at the bracelet.

The name printed on it was blurred from age.

But the date was visible.

Three years earlier.

Arthur picked up the photograph.

It showed Claire holding a baby.

Mara's breath caught.

The child had the same small brown mark beneath his left ear.

The same mark Eli had.

Arthur's hand began to shake.

“Oh, Claire.”

Mara looked at Eli.

Then back at the photograph.

The resemblance was undeniable.

But resemblance was not proof.

The officer examined the USB drive.

“Do you recognize this?”

Arthur nodded.

“No.”

Mara looked at him.

“You don't?”

“No.”

The officer turned the photograph over.

Something was written on the back.

Mara read it aloud.

“IF HE COMES BACK, DON'T LET HIM TAKE THE BOY.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Who is he?”

Mara asked.

Arthur didn't answer.

The officer did.

“Probably Daniel.”

Arthur looked at him.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because Daniel isn't the only person who wanted Claire's child.”

Mara's eyes lifted.

“Who else?”

Arthur looked at the corridor.

“My daughter's employer.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

“What does that mean?”

“Claire discovered something at work.”

“What?”

Arthur swallowed.

“She was an accountant for a private medical company.”

Mara frowned.

“What did she discover?”

“Payments. Fake patients. Stolen identities.”

The officer looked at the USB.

“And this?”

“Could contain the records.”

Mara stared at the drive.

“So this wasn't about my son.”

Arthur looked at her.

“It may be about both.”

“How?”

“Because someone needed a child whose identity could be changed.”

Mara's arms tightened around Eli.

The officer immediately said, “Let's not jump to conclusions.”

Arthur nodded.

“I agree.”

Mara looked at the hospital bracelet again.

The printed name was almost unreadable.

But underneath the faded ink, one line remained clear.

BENNETT, E.

Mara whispered, “Eli.”

Arthur looked at her.

“His full name?”

“Elias Daniel Cole.”

Arthur stared at the bracelet.

“Elias.”

Mara felt dizzy.

Her son's birth certificate was missing.

His passport had been in the missing suitcase.

Someone had photographed him.

Someone had placed the key inside his clothes.

And now there was a hospital bracelet with a nearly identical name.

She turned to Arthur.

“Tell me everything.”

Arthur looked exhausted.

“I will.”

“Now.”

He nodded.

“Claire's son was born Elias Bennett.”

Mara stopped breathing.

“Daniel changed the name?”

“I believe so.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Did Claire know?”

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“She wrote something to me before she died.”

“What?”

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, don't let Daniel take Elias.’”

Mara stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell the police?”

“I did.”

“And?”

“They said there wasn't enough evidence.”

“Why didn't you keep looking?”

“I did.”

“For three years?”

“Yes.”

“Then why stop?”

Arthur's eyes filled with something deeper than grief.

“I didn't.”

Mara looked at him.

Arthur pointed toward the USB.

“Someone has been sending me pieces of the truth for years.”

“Why you?”

“Because Claire trusted me.”

“Then why did you approach me today?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Because yesterday I received a photograph of you and Eli.”

Mara's face tightened.

“Who sent it?”

“I don't know.”

“What did it say?”

Arthur looked at her.

“It said, ‘Your grandson is coming home.’”

Mara could barely breathe.

The officer took the USB.

“We're going to have this examined.”

A sudden noise came from the terminal.

Someone shouted.

Then another voice.

The woman near the vending machine dropped her bag and ran.

The officer turned.

“Stay here.”

But Mara had already seen something.

The gray-coated man was moving through the crowd.

Arthur saw him too.

“That’s him.”

The man looked back.

For one brief second, his eyes met Mara's.

Then he ran.

The officer sprinted after him.

Arthur started forward.

Mara grabbed his sleeve.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

The man disappeared behind a crowd of passengers.

Mara looked down at Eli.

Her son had awakened.

His eyes were open.

He stared at the photograph in her hand.

Then he pointed.

“Daddy.”

Mara froze.

“Who?”

Eli pointed toward the hallway where the man had disappeared.

“Daddy.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Does he know that man?”

“I don't know.”

Eli began to cry.

Mara held him tighter.

Then her phone vibrated.

A video had arrived.

She pressed play.

The screen showed a dark room.

Daniel was sitting in a chair.

His face was bruised.

His hands appeared to be tied.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Mara,” he said, “if you're watching this, listen carefully.”

Mara could barely breathe.

Daniel continued.

“I lied to you.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

Daniel looked frightened.

“I lied about who I was. I lied about Claire. I lied about Eli.”

Mara's knees nearly gave way.

“But I never lied about loving you.”

She stared at the screen.

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“The man you're with is telling you only half the truth.”

Arthur stepped back.

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Your son is not the person you think he is.”

Mara's heart hammered.

Daniel looked toward something off camera.

Then back at her.

“And if Arthur asks you to give him the child, don't.”

The video ended.

Mara stood frozen.

Arthur looked at her.

“I would never—”

Her phone vibrated again.

A final message appeared.

ASK HIM WHO REALLY KILLED CLAIRE.

Mara slowly raised her eyes.

Arthur was staring at the screen.

And for the first time since they met, the old man looked afraid of her.
