PART 14 – Elena Voss Had Been Living Under Another Name for Years, and Her First Words to Mara Revealed Why Claire Had Trusted Her With the Final Evidence

They found Elena three days later.

She was living under the name Elena Carter in a quiet coastal town two hours north of Brighton.

Detective Morris located her through an old bank account.

Mara and Arthur went with her.

Daniel stayed behind with the boys.

The house was small.

White walls.

Blue door.

A bicycle leaning against the fence.

It looked painfully ordinary.

Mara knocked.

Nobody answered.

Morris knocked again.

A curtain moved.

Then the door opened.

Elena stood there.

Older than the photograph.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face thinner.

But Mara recognized her immediately.

Elena looked at Arthur first.

Then Mara.

Her expression changed.

“You found her.”

Mara frowned.

“Found who?”

Elena looked at her.

“Claire.”

Mara's breath caught.

“She's dead.”

“I know.”

“Then what do you mean?”

Elena stepped aside.

“Come in.”

The house smelled of tea and old books.

There were no photographs on the walls.

No family portraits.

No signs of another life.

Elena sat at the table.

Mara sat opposite her.

Arthur remained standing.

Morris stayed near the door.

Elena looked at Mara for a long time.

“You look like the woman Claire described.”

Mara felt unsettled.

“What did she say?”

“That you didn't know how strong you were.”

Mara almost smiled.

“She was wrong.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“She wasn't.”

Mara placed the photograph on the table.

“Where did this come from?”

Elena looked at it.

“Claire.”

“I know.”

“She gave it to Arthur?”

“No.”

“Then how did it get there?”

Mara explained.

Elena listened.

When she finished, Elena said, “Gregory.”

Arthur stiffened.

“What about him?”

“He put it there.”

“Why?”

“To make sure someone found me.”

Morris frowned.

“Gregory is in custody.”

“He has people outside.”

Mara felt cold.

“Are you in danger?”

Elena smiled sadly.

“I have been in danger for eleven years.”

Mara stared.

“Why eleven?”

“That's when Claire first found the records.”

“What records?”

Elena reached beneath the table.

She brought out a metal box.

Inside were documents.

Mara recognized the Northbridge logo.

But these files were older.

Much older.

“Northbridge began manipulating identities before Claire joined them.”

Morris looked through the pages.

“These go back fifteen years.”

“Yes.”

“Who started it?”

Elena looked at Arthur.

“Your daughter.”

Arthur recoiled.

“What?”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“Claire did not create the system.”

“Then why say her name?”

“Because she discovered it.”

Mara understood.

Claire had inherited a secret.

She had not created it.

Elena continued.

“Northbridge had a private program. It began as an illegal medical research network. Over time, it became something else.”

“What?”

“Identity laundering.”

Mara's stomach tightened.

“Children?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

Mara looked at the documents.

“Were Elias and Samuel part of it?”

Elena nodded.

“But not in the way you think.”

Mara leaned forward.

“Explain.”

Elena opened a folder.

Inside were two birth records.

One for Samuel.

One for Elias.

Both contained red markings.

“These records were flagged because Claire was investigating them.”

Mara read the notes.

Samuel had been marked for relocation.

Elias had been marked for medical observation.

She looked up.

“Why Elias?”

Elena's expression changed.

“Because he was born with a rare genetic condition.”

Mara froze.

“What condition?”

“A harmless one.”

“Then why did they care?”

“Because it made him useful for a study.”

Mara felt anger rise.

“They experimented on him?”

“Not knowingly.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“What did they do?”

“They altered medical records and used his identity to record treatments given to another child.”

Mara looked at Eli.

Her son had never been treated for anything unusual.

That was what made it worse.

Someone else had been living inside his records.

Elena continued.

“Claire discovered the substitution.”

“Whose records?”

Elena looked at Samuel.

“Samuel's.”

Mara stared.

“Why?”

“Because Samuel's records were clean.”

Mara frowned.

“So they used Elias's identity for Samuel?”

“Yes.”

Arthur looked confused.

“Why would they do that?”

Elena answered.

“Because Samuel had something they wanted hidden.”

“What?”

Elena hesitated.

“His biological father.”

Mara looked at her.

“Daniel?”

Elena nodded.

Arthur sat down.

“What was wrong with him?”

“Nothing.”

Elena looked at Mara.

“But Daniel's family had been connected to Northbridge for generations.”

Mara felt another piece fall into place.

Daniel had not simply stumbled into Northbridge.

His family had been connected to it.

He had inherited access.

He had known how the system worked.

And when Claire discovered it, he had become trapped between his family and the woman he loved.

“Did Daniel participate?”

Elena answered carefully.

“At first.”

Mara's heart tightened.

“At first?”

“He helped create records.”

Arthur looked furious.

“Then he betrayed them.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Claire.”

Mara looked at the documents.

“So Daniel didn't just lie to me.”

“No.”

“He betrayed his own family.”

“Yes.”

Mara sat back.

She thought about Daniel's face in the hospital.

His exhaustion.

His regret.

His insistence that he had never intended to stay.

Suddenly his fear made more sense.

Not forgiveness.

Understanding.

Different things.

Morris asked, “What happened to the records?”

Elena pointed to the metal box.

“I copied them.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire asked me.”

“Where is the original archive?”

Elena looked at Mara.

“You already found it.”

Mara frowned.

“Saint Mary's?”

“Yes.”

“But there was nothing else.”

“There was.”

“What?”

“A sealed basement.”

Mara stared.

“We didn't search it.”

“You couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because the entrance was hidden.”

Elena reached into the box.

She removed a small key.

It had a red thread tied around it.

Mara recognized it immediately.

Claire.

“Where does it lead?”

“To the room where Claire kept the final records.”

Morris stood.

“We're going back.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because someone has been waiting for you to open it.”

Mara looked at her.

“Who?”

Elena said one word.

“Daniel.”

Mara's heart stopped.

“Why?”

“Because Claire didn't trust him with the archive.”

Mara stared.

“You said he helped her.”

“He did.”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because Daniel knew something Claire didn't.”

“What?”

Elena's expression hardened.

“His father was still alive.”

Arthur looked stunned.

“Daniel's father?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Mara looked at the records.

“Does he control Northbridge?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Elena looked at her.

“The original founder.”

Mara felt the room become cold.

“Who is he?”

Elena closed the metal box.

“You've already met him.”

Mara stared.

“Who?”

Elena looked at Arthur.

“Your husband’s father.”

Arthur's face went blank.

Mara's heart began pounding.

Daniel had always claimed his parents were dead.

He had said he had no family.

He had lied.

But perhaps the lie had protected more than himself.

Perhaps someone had been alive all along.

Someone who had watched everything.

Someone who had known Mara's name before she ever met Daniel.

Mara stood.

“Where is he?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Then who does?”

Elena looked at the silver watch on Mara's wrist.

“Claire.”

Mara frowned.

“She’s dead.”

Elena nodded.

“But she left one final recording.”
