NOTE: This part reveals the circumstances surrounding Mara's father's disappearance and introduces the missing letter that connects Daniel to the family's hidden history.
Ruth sat beside the hospital window.
Mara remained standing.
Daniel stood behind her.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Finally Mara asked, “Why?”
Ruth looked older than she had that morning.
“Because your father was afraid.”
“Of Victor?”
“Yes.”
“What had Victor done?”
Ruth shook her head.
“It wasn't one thing.”
Mara folded her arms.
“Then give me all of it.”
Ruth took a breath.
“Your father discovered that Victor had been stealing money from the family business.”
Mara frowned.
“My father owned a construction company.”
“Victor handled the accounts.”
“And stole money?”
“For years.”
“Why didn't Dad report him?”
“Because Victor threatened him.”
“With what?”
“With you.”
Mara felt her anger disappear for a moment.
“I was a child.”
“Yes.”
“What could he threaten?”
Ruth looked at her.
“Your safety.”
Mara remembered almost nothing from that period.
She remembered her father working late.
She remembered her mother locking doors.
She remembered Lucas being born.
And she remembered waking one morning to find her father's clothes gone.
She had been told he died.
Now she understood that the story had been constructed.
“What happened that night?”
Ruth looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.”
Daniel hesitated.
“I found the first part.”
“What first part?”
“The letter.”
He handed Mara another envelope.
The paper was old.
The handwriting belonged to her father.
Mara opened it.
The message was short.
If anything happens to me, do not trust Victor. The records are hidden where Elena cannot search without remembering what she has forgotten.
Mara read it twice.
“What does that mean?”
Ruth answered.
“Your father had a hiding place.”
“Where?”
“We don't know.”
Mara looked at Daniel.
“You found this in the attic?”
“No.”
“Where?”
“Behind a loose brick in the fireplace.”
Mara looked toward her mother.
Elena was asleep.
“Did she know?”
Ruth nodded.
“She knew something.”
“Something?”
“She knew enough to be afraid.”
Mara sat down.
“And Lucas?”
Ruth looked at her.
“Lucas was born the morning after your father disappeared.”
Mara frowned.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“Everything.”
Ruth explained that Lucas's birth had been complicated. Elena had been exhausted and frightened. During that same night, someone had entered the house.
The intruder searched the study.
He didn't touch money.
He searched drawers.
He looked beneath floorboards.
He wanted documents.
Mara whispered:
“The records.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Your father confronted him.”
“Victor?”
“No.”
Ruth paused.
“Someone working for Victor.”
Mara felt a knot forming in her stomach.
“Who?”
Ruth wouldn't answer.
Daniel interrupted.
“We need to find the records before they do.”
Mara turned toward him.
“Who are they?”
“We don't know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because we don't.”
The hospital lights flickered.
Elena woke.
“Ruth.”
“Yes?”
“You told her.”
Ruth nodded.
“I had to.”
Elena looked at Mara.
“I'm sorry.”
Mara approached her.
“Mom, where is Dad?”
Elena began crying.
“I don't know.”
“Is he alive?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why did you tell me he died?”
“Because I was told that if I ever spoke his name again, you would disappear too.”
Mara's anger returned.
“Who told you?”
Elena whispered:
“Victor.”
That night, Daniel drove Mara home.
Neither spoke much.
When they entered the house, Mara noticed the front door had been left unlocked.
She stopped.
“Did you lock it?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He checked the rooms.
Nothing appeared missing.
Then Mara saw the attic ladder.
It was down.
Someone had been there.
They climbed together.
The old boxes had been moved.
Daniel searched the floor.
Mara noticed something beneath a blanket.
A wooden box.
Inside were letters.
Dozens of them.
All addressed to Elena.
Most had never been opened.
The earliest was dated shortly after Mara's father disappeared.
The latest was only six months old.
Mara opened one.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her father's.
She began crying.
“He's alive.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“We don't know that.”
“You said you found the letter.”
“I found evidence.”
Mara opened another.
This one contained a photograph.
Her father stood beside a railway station.
On the back:
I am safe, but I cannot return yet.
Mara's hands trembled.
“Why would he stay away?”
Daniel looked at the letters.
“Maybe he thought coming back would put you in danger.”
A noise came from downstairs.
They froze.
Footsteps.
Daniel stood.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Mara.”
“I'm coming.”
They moved quietly down the stairs.
The living room was empty.
Then a window slammed.
Someone had escaped through the back.
Daniel ran outside.
He returned several minutes later.
Nobody was there.
But on the kitchen table was a note.
Stop looking.
Mara stared at it.
Daniel picked it up.
There was a second message underneath.
Your father chose to leave you.
Mara felt something inside her collapse.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You don't know that.”
The note continued.
Ask him why he never answered your mother's letters.
Mara looked at the unopened letters in her hands.
Suddenly she noticed something.
Every letter had been sealed.
None had been sent.
She looked at Elena's name.
“Mom never received these.”
Daniel understood.
“Someone intercepted them.”
Mara began sorting through the envelopes.
There was one unusual letter.
No stamp.
No address.
Only one word.
Lucas.
Mara opened it.
The page contained a single sentence.
He was not born by accident.
Mara looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
He didn't answer.
She read it again.
Then the lights went out.
A crash came from the attic.
Daniel grabbed a flashlight.
They ran upstairs.
The wooden box was gone.
So were the letters.
Someone had entered through the roof window.
Mara stared into the darkness.
“They took the evidence.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Not all of it.”
He held up the one letter marked Lucas.
Mara suddenly understood.
Someone had wanted them to find that letter.
The question was why.
