NOTE: This part uncovers the truth behind Lucas's birth and identifies the person manipulating the family from the shadows.
Mara spent the next morning staring at the letter.
He was not born by accident.
Those six words had changed the meaning of everything.
Lucas had always been her younger brother.
They had fought over television shows, shared secrets, and blamed each other for broken household objects. She had never questioned whether he belonged to the family.
Now she hated herself for even wondering.
Daniel sat across from her.
“Don't let one sentence define Lucas.”
“I know.”
“You love him.”
“Of course.”
“Then start with what you know.”
Mara nodded.
She knew Lucas was born the morning after their father disappeared.
She knew her mother had been frightened.
She knew Victor had threatened them.
She knew someone had intercepted letters.
And she knew someone wanted them to believe Lucas was connected to the disappearance.
But that did not explain why.
Mara called Ruth.
She answered immediately.
“What happened?”
“The letter.”
Ruth went silent.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“What does it say?”
Mara read it.
Ruth sighed.
“I hoped you would never see that.”
“Why?”
“Because it was written to make you suspicious.”
“Of Lucas?”
“Yes.”
“Is he my brother?”
Ruth answered without hesitation.
“Yes.”
Mara closed her eyes.
Relief came first.
Then anger.
“Who wrote the letter?”
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
Ruth paused.
“Your father.”
Mara opened her eyes.
“What?”
“Your father wrote several letters after Lucas was born. Some were warnings. Some were instructions. He knew people would try to use Lucas against you.”
“Why?”
“Because Lucas was the only person who knew where the final records were.”
Mara stared.
“Lucas was a baby.”
“I know.”
“Then how could he know?”
“He couldn't.”
Mara felt confused.
Ruth continued.
“Your father didn't mean Lucas knew the location. He meant the records were connected to something Lucas had.”
“What?”
“A birth record.”
Mara's stomach tightened.
Lucas's birth certificate.
They searched the house.
The original document was missing.
Daniel contacted the hospital.
The hospital confirmed that an amended record existed.
Someone had changed the document years earlier.
Mara asked who had requested the amendment.
The answer was devastating.
Victor.
Mara sat down.
“Why would he change Lucas's record?”
Daniel looked at her.
“To create confusion.”
They found the original record in an archive.
Lucas's birth had been registered under Elena's name.
But the father's name had been left blank.
Mara stared.
Her father had been missing.
The blank space had become a weapon.
Victor had used it to suggest Lucas wasn't truly part of the family.
But the truth was simpler.
Lucas was Mara's brother.
Their father had been gone.
That was all.
Then Ruth revealed something else.
“Your father left a message for Lucas.”
“He left a message for a newborn?”
“He knew Lucas would eventually grow up.”
“Where is it?”
Ruth looked toward the floor.
“Your father's old workshop.”
They went there.
The workshop had been closed for years.
Dust covered the tools.
The windows were dirty.
But the old workbench remained.
Mara found a hidden compartment.
Inside was a cassette tape.
Daniel found an old player.
They listened.
Her father's voice filled the room.
“If my children ever hear this, I want them to know that I did not leave because I wanted to.”
Mara began crying.
“I left because Victor discovered the records.”
The recording continued.
“He believes the records contain proof of crimes committed by several people. He is right.”
Mara looked at Daniel.
Her father explained that the records were not simply financial documents.
They contained evidence of a cover-up.
People had been using the family business to move stolen money.
Victor was involved.
But there were others.
One was a lawyer.
Another was a banker.
And one was a police officer.
Mara's breath caught.
The police had been compromised.
Her father continued.
“If I disappear, trust the person who asks you to look at the original documents, not the copies.”
The recording ended.
Mara sat silently.
Then someone knocked on the workshop door.
Three times.
Daniel stood.
“Who is it?”
A woman's voice answered.
“Mara.”
She opened the door.
An older woman stood outside.
Mara recognized her.
Sarah.
Her father's former accountant.
Sarah looked terrified.
“I need to talk to you.”
“About my father?”
“Yes.”
Sarah entered.
She carried a folder.
“Your father is alive.”
Mara stopped breathing.
Sarah nodded.
“I've spoken to him.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“Where?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because he doesn't trust anyone.”
Mara's anger rose.
“Not even me?”
“Especially you.”
The words hurt.
Sarah immediately shook her head.
“Not because he doesn't love you.”
“Then why?”
“Because Victor knows you are his weakness.”
Sarah opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Mara's father.
Older.
Alive.
Living somewhere near the coast.
Mara touched one photograph.
“He's really alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't he come home?”
“Because Victor is still looking for him.”
Daniel asked:
“Why now?”
Sarah looked at him.
“Because the final record was found.”
“Where?”
Sarah looked at Mara.
“In this house.”
Mara froze.
“What?”
“Your father hid it years ago.”
“Where?”
Sarah shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“Then how do you know it's here?”
“Because someone found the location.”
“Who?”
Sarah's face changed.
“The person who has been watching you.”
The workshop door suddenly opened.
A man stood outside.
Mara recognized him from an old photograph.
Victor.
He looked older.
But his expression was calm.
Sarah stepped backward.
Victor smiled.
“Mara.”
Daniel moved in front of her.
“What do you want?”
Victor looked at the folder.
“You have something that belongs to me.”
Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
Victor's gaze moved to Mara.
“Your father made you believe the records would save you.”
Mara stood her ground.
“What did he know?”
Victor smiled.
“Enough to ruin all of us.”
“Then why are you still alive?”
Victor's smile disappeared.
“Because your father chose his family over the truth.”
Mara felt the room go cold.
“What does that mean?”
Victor stepped closer.
“Ask him.”
He tossed a phone onto the table.
A video began playing.
Mara's father appeared on the screen.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Mara, if you're seeing this, Victor has found you.”
The video ended.
Mara looked at Victor.
“You knew we'd find this.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I need you to lead me to the records.”
Mara finally understood.
The family had never been the target.
They were the map.
Victor had been waiting for them to discover the hidden evidence.
And now he knew exactly where to look.
