NOTE: This part introduces Mara, her husband Daniel, her pregnant mother Elena, and the disturbing family gathering that reveals an old secret nobody is willing to explain.
Mara knew something was wrong before she opened the front door.
The house was too quiet.
Her mother had been expecting her for dinner, and Elena always turned the television up when she cooked. Mara could usually hear it from the driveway. Tonight there was nothing except the faint ticking of the porch clock and the wind moving through the hedges.
Mara stood with one hand on the door handle.
“Mom?”
No answer.
She unlocked the door and stepped inside.
The living room looked as if someone had fought there. A coffee table had been pushed sideways. A ceramic cup lay broken beside the sofa. One cushion was on the floor, and a lamp had been knocked against the wall.
Then Mara saw the woman sitting on the carpet.
It was her mother.
Elena was pale, one hand pressed against her stomach, the other gripping the edge of the sofa. Her breathing was shallow. She looked frightened enough that Mara forgot everything else.
“Mom!”
Mara rushed toward her.
Elena grabbed her wrist.
“Don't.”
“Don't what?”
“Don't call anyone yet.”
Mara stared at her.
“What happened?”
Elena's eyes moved toward the hallway.
“Your brother.”
Mara froze.
“Lucas?”
“He's upstairs.”
“Is he hurt?”
“I don't know.”
Mara heard a groan.
It came from the living room behind her.
She turned.
Daniel was lying beside the coffee table.
His shirt was torn near the shoulder, and one hand was pressed against his ribs. A kitchen knife lay several feet away.
Mara screamed.
She dropped beside him.
“Daniel!”
His eyes opened.
“I'm okay.”
“You're bleeding.”
“It's not bad.”
Mara looked at her mother.
“What happened?”
Elena shook her head.
“I didn't do this.”
Before Mara could answer, footsteps sounded above them.
Lucas appeared on the staircase.
He was holding his arm.
His face was furious.
“You brought him here?”
Mara stood.
“What are you talking about?”
Lucas pointed at Daniel.
“He lied to you.”
Daniel tried to sit up.
“Lucas, stop.”
“Don't tell me to stop.”
Mara stepped between them.
“Someone needs to explain.”
Nobody did.
Then the front door opened.
Mara's aunt Ruth walked in.
She stopped when she saw the room.
“Oh, no.”
Mara looked at her.
“You knew?”
Ruth shook her head.
“I came because your mother called me.”
Elena looked at Ruth.
“I didn't call you.”
Ruth went pale.
“Yes, you did.”
“No.”
Ruth pulled out her phone.
“There was a message.”
She showed it to Mara.
The message had been sent from Elena's number.
Come immediately. He knows.
Mara looked at her mother.
“Who knows?”
Elena closed her eyes.
“I don't know.”
Lucas laughed bitterly.
“You know exactly who.”
Mara turned toward him.
“Then tell me.”
Lucas hesitated.
He looked at Daniel.
Daniel shook his head.
“Not here.”
Mara's patience broke.
“My husband is injured, my mother is terrified, and you two are talking like I'm the only person who doesn't know what's happening.”
Lucas looked down.
“You weren't supposed to come tonight.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever did this expected you to be somewhere else.”
Mara felt a chill.
“Who?”
Before Lucas could answer, Elena suddenly gasped.
She gripped her stomach.
Mara rushed toward her.
“Mom?”
Elena's face tightened.
“I think…”
“What?”
“I think something is wrong with the baby.”
Everything else disappeared.
Mara called emergency services.
Daniel tried to stand.
“I'll go with her.”
“You're injured.”
“I don't care.”
Ruth helped Elena toward the door.
Lucas remained frozen.
Mara noticed.
“Lucas, come.”
He didn't move.
“Lucas!”
He finally followed.
Outside, the ambulance arrived.
As the paramedics treated Elena, one of them asked how the injuries had happened.
Nobody answered immediately.
Mara looked at Daniel.
He said quietly:
“We argued.”
“That doesn't explain the injuries.”
Lucas stepped forward.
“My brother-in-law attacked me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“That isn't what happened.”
Mara stared between them.
“Which one of you is lying?”
Neither answered.
The paramedics took Elena away.
Mara climbed into the ambulance.
Daniel followed in another vehicle with Ruth.
Lucas remained behind.
But before Mara's car pulled away, she saw him standing in the doorway.
He was holding something.
A photograph.
And he was crying.
At the hospital, doctors examined Elena.
The baby was safe.
Mara finally breathed again.
She sat beside her mother's bed.
“What happened?”
Elena looked exhausted.
“I should have told you years ago.”
“Told me what?”
“That your father didn't die the way I said he did.”
Mara stared.
“My father died in an accident.”
“That is what I told you.”
“Wasn't it true?”
Elena looked toward the window.
“No.”
Mara felt as though the room had tilted.
“What happened to him?”
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“The night Lucas was born.”
Mara shook her head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“I know.”
“Where was he?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why tell me he was dead?”
“Because someone told me to.”
“Who?”
Elena hesitated.
“Your father's brother.”
Mara knew the name.
Victor.
She had never met him.
Her mother had always said he left the country decades earlier.
“Victor is alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
Mara stared at her.
“What does Daniel know?”
Elena looked frightened.
“Daniel wasn't supposed to know anything.”
Mara remembered Lucas's words.
He lied to you.
She stood.
“What did Daniel lie about?”
Elena grabbed her hand.
“Don't leave.”
“I need answers.”
“You may not like them.”
“I already don't.”
The hospital room door opened.
Daniel stood there.
His face was bruised.
Mara looked at him.
“Tell me the truth.”
Daniel closed the door.
“I found something.”
“What?”
He removed an envelope from his jacket.
It contained a photograph.
Mara looked at it.
Her father was standing beside Victor.
Behind them was the same house where Elena now lived.
On the back was a date.
The date was three days before her father supposedly died.
Mara's hands began to shake.
“Where did you get this?”
“In your mother's attic.”
“Why were you there?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because I was searching for Lucas.”
Mara frowned.
“Why?”
“He called me last night.”
“What did he say?”
Daniel swallowed.
“He said your mother was in danger.”
Mara looked at the photograph again.
There was another person in it.
A young woman.
She stood beside Victor.
Mara recognized her immediately.
It was Ruth.
Her aunt.
Mara turned toward the door.
Ruth was standing outside.
She had heard everything.
Her face had gone white.
“I can explain.”
Mara stepped into the hallway.
“Then start.”
Ruth looked at the photograph.
“I thought that picture was gone.”
Mara's voice hardened.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ruth looked at Elena's hospital room.
“Because that was the night your family made a decision.”
“What decision?”
Ruth whispered:
“To make everyone believe your father was dead.”
