PART 3 – The Email Victoria Thought Would Never Be Read Exposed the Secret Behind Her Sister’s Disappearance and the Wedding

Daniel read the email in silence, his thumb pressed so hard against the paper that it bent near the corner. It was addressed to a woman he did not recognize and contained a series of messages about Emma's accident, the wedding, and a decision Victoria had already begun making while her sister was still in the hospital.

The first lines were ordinary enough. Victoria asked whether the recipient had received the documents she had requested. She mentioned that Emma was recovering and that she needed to know how long the process would take.

Then came the sentence that made Daniel stop breathing for a moment.

“She won't be able to return to the apartment before everything is settled, and by the time she can, Daniel will believe she left him.”

He read it again.

The email did not establish that Victoria had caused the accident. It did establish that she had anticipated using Emma's absence to separate the couple, and that she had been making arrangements to ensure Emma could not easily return to the life she had left behind.

Daniel lifted his eyes.

“What is this?”

Emma's voice was quiet. “I found it when I finally recovered access to the account connected to the apartment arrangements. There were several messages. I printed the ones I could verify.”

Victoria moved toward him. “Those emails are being taken out of context.”

Daniel stepped away before she could reach the page.

“Then explain the context.”

Victoria looked around the chapel, perhaps searching for someone who would intervene on her behalf. Her mother sat rigidly in the third row, her face pale with disbelief. The best man had moved closer to Daniel, while the officiant remained beside the altar with the expression of someone who wished he had never been asked to conduct the ceremony.

“I was trying to make sure Emma had somewhere safe to recover,” Victoria said.

Emma shook her head. “You told the clinic that you would help me get home. Then you told me I needed more rest and should avoid stressful conversations. I believed you because you were my sister.”

“I was worried about you.”

“You were worried I would speak to Daniel.”

Victoria's chin lifted. “You have always assumed the worst of me.”

Emma looked at her for a long moment. “I didn't assume anything when I woke up in that hospital bed. I didn't even know what day it was. I trusted the people who said they were helping me.”

She explained that after the accident, she had been disoriented and frightened. The doctors had warned her that her memory might return gradually and that she should not rush into major decisions while recovering. Victoria had visited her once, bringing flowers and telling her that Daniel had been informed about the accident.

Emma had been relieved. She had asked whether he was coming.

Victoria had said he was devastated and needed time.

During the visit, Victoria had offered to handle practical matters, including contacting the landlord, collecting belongings, and arranging transportation when Emma was ready to leave the clinic. Emma had accepted because she could barely dress herself without help.

She had not known that Victoria was telling Daniel a different story.

When Emma was discharged, she discovered that the keys to the apartment were missing from her belongings. Victoria said she had collected them for safekeeping. She told Emma that Daniel had asked for space and that the apartment was being prepared for a move.

Emma had been too weak to argue. She went to Mrs. Alvarez's home, believing she would be able to contact Daniel once her phone was replaced and her memory became clearer.

Instead, she found that her email recovery information had been altered and that messages were being redirected. When she eventually regained access, the emails showed that Victoria had communicated with the landlord about removing Emma's belongings and had instructed him to contact her rather than Emma.

The landlord's correspondence did not show that Victoria had taken control of the apartment through a legal transfer, but it did show that she had represented herself as the person authorized to manage Emma's affairs. That misrepresentation had delayed Emma's return and made it harder for her to retrieve the belongings she needed.

Daniel lowered the email.

“You interfered with her apartment?”

Victoria's eyes filled again. “She was gone. Someone had to make decisions.”

“She was recovering from an accident,” Emma said. “She wasn't gone.”

“I didn't know when you would come back!”

“You never asked me what I wanted.”

Victoria's face hardened. “You always got what you wanted. You got the family attention, the better opportunities, the man I loved. Everyone treated you as if you could do no wrong.”

Emma seemed to shrink at the confession, not because she believed it, but because it revealed how long Victoria had carried a resentment that had never been spoken honestly.

Daniel stared at her. “You could have told me how you felt.”

“And you would have rejected me,” Victoria replied.

“You don't know that.”

“Yes, I do. You loved Emma. You always loved Emma.”

Daniel did not deny it. His relationship with Emma had not been perfect, but he had chosen to build a future with her. Victoria had been close enough to witness that choice and had decided that the only way to change it was to make Emma appear to have rejected him first.

He looked down at the email again.

“Did you change her account information?”

Victoria's silence lasted too long.

“Answer me.”

“I wanted to make sure she couldn't suddenly return and destroy everything I was trying to build.”

Emma's eyes widened. “You knew I was trying to come back?”

Victoria turned away.

“That's why you kept telling people I had left,” Emma said. “You weren't waiting for me to recover. You were waiting for me to disappear from Daniel's life permanently.”

Victoria's shoulders shook. “I wanted one chance. One chance for someone to choose me.”

Daniel's expression changed from anger to something colder. “You didn't give me a chance to choose anything. You made a decision for both of us.”

He looked toward the guests. “I need everyone to understand that I did not know Emma was trying to contact me. I was told she had ended our engagement, and I believed it because I had no reason to think Victoria was lying.”

A woman near the aisle nodded slowly. Another guest whispered that Victoria had told them Emma was selfish and had always wanted to escape the relationship. Daniel's mother rose from her seat and approached her son, placing a hand on his arm.

“Daniel, we should leave,” she said gently.

He nodded, but before moving, he faced Victoria again.

“The wedding is over.”

Victoria looked as though he had struck her. “You can't do this in front of everyone.”

“You did this in front of everyone. You invited them here to witness a marriage you knew was built on a lie.”

“I love you.”

“You may love me. That doesn't make what you did acceptable.”

She reached for his hand, but he stepped back. The distance between them was only a few feet, yet it seemed to separate two different versions of the past: the future Victoria had imagined and the life Daniel now understood he had almost entered.

Emma remained near the aisle, visibly exhausted. The confrontation had required more strength than she had expected. Her fingers trembled, and she pressed one hand against her ribs.

Daniel noticed immediately.

“Are you all right?”

“I need to sit down.”

He guided her to a nearby chair, keeping his touch gentle and giving her space to refuse help. A guest brought water, and Daniel's mother knelt beside Emma to ask whether she needed medical attention.

Emma thanked her and said she had been checked recently. She was not in immediate danger, but the journey and the confrontation had left her in pain.

The officiant quietly asked whether the family needed assistance arranging transportation. Daniel's mother said she would make sure Emma was taken somewhere comfortable.

Victoria stood alone beside the altar, her veil slipping from one shoulder. Nobody approached her. Several guests gathered their belongings and left without speaking to her, while others lingered in the hope that the situation might somehow be explained away.

Daniel placed the ring back in its box and handed it to his best man.

“Please keep this for me.”

Then he returned to Emma.

“I need to ask you something,” he said. “And I want you to answer honestly, even if it's not what I want to hear.”

Emma looked up at him.

“Do you still want to marry me?”

The question seemed to frighten her more than the confrontation had.

She looked at the man she had planned to marry, then at the chapel doors through which she had entered. She had imagined finding him, explaining the truth, and returning to the life they had shared before the accident. But the last six weeks had changed her, and she could not simply step back into the future she had lost.

“I still love you,” she said. “But I don't know if we can go back to the way things were.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I don't know either.”

It was the first honest answer either of them had given since she entered the chapel.

Emma looked toward Victoria, who was still standing beside the altar. Her sister's face was wet with tears, but Emma felt no desire to approach her or make the moment easier.

“I'm not here to punish you,” Emma told her. “I'm here because I deserved the chance to speak for myself.”

Victoria lowered her head. For once, she had no convincing explanation ready.

The guests began leaving in small groups. The ceremony had ended, but the consequences were only beginning. Daniel and Emma still had to decide what remained of their relationship, while Victoria would have to face questions about the messages, the interference with Emma's belongings, and the choices she had made while her sister was recovering.

As Daniel helped Emma toward the entrance, she stopped beside the open doors and looked back at the altar.

The flowers were still arranged beneath the cross. The candles remained lit. A white ribbon had fallen from the end of one pew, and nobody had bothered to pick it up.

Everything had been prepared for a wedding.

Instead, the chapel had become the place where a lie finally lost its power.
