PART 7 – Mara Walked Into Northbridge With Arthur Beside Her, Knowing the Truth About Eli Could Destroy the Family She Had Spent Three Years Building

The Northbridge building stood twelve minutes from the airport.

The police convoy arrived without sirens.

Mara sat in the back seat with Eli asleep beside her, his head resting against her arm. Arthur sat across from them. Neither spoke during the drive.

The silence was not comfortable.

It was necessary.

Mara watched the city slide past the window.

For three years she had believed she understood her family.

Daniel worked hard.

Daniel loved Eli.

Daniel had lost his previous wife in a tragic accident.

Daniel had wanted a fresh start.

Every piece of that story had been false.

Except perhaps one.

His love for Eli.

Mara still did not know whether that was real.

And somehow that uncertainty hurt more than the lies.

Arthur broke the silence.

“I am sorry.”

Mara looked at him.

“For what?”

“For not finding him sooner.”

“You were looking.”

“Not hard enough.”

“You didn't know where to look.”

“I should have.”

Mara glanced at Eli.

“You were searching for a child you had never met.”

Arthur nodded.

“I knew his name.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

He looked out the window.

“But I knew Claire loved him.”

Mara said nothing.

Arthur's voice became quieter.

“That was enough to keep me searching.”

The vehicle stopped beneath the Northbridge parking structure.

Officers surrounded the entrance.

Mara held Eli's hand.

The building's glass doors reflected them.

A woman with a badge approached.

“I'm Detective Lena Morris.”

Mara nodded.

“Where is Daniel?”

“We don't know.”

“Victor?”

“Also unknown.”

Arthur looked at the building.

“I know where the old records room is.”

The detective studied him.

“You've been here before.”

“Yes.”

“Then you stay beside me.”

They entered.

The lobby was empty.

Too empty.

Northbridge Medical normally operated around the clock, but the reception desk stood abandoned. The lights remained on. A printer hummed behind the counter.

Mara heard Eli whisper.

“Mommy.”

“I’m here.”

He pointed.

A red thread was tied around the reception computer.

Mara stopped.

Arthur saw it.

“Claire.”

Detective Morris examined the thread.

“This was her system.”

“What system?”

Arthur explained.

“She used red thread to mark important places.”

“Why?”

“She believed written notes could be discovered. Physical markers were harder to explain.”

Mara looked at the thread.

“So she knew someone was watching her.”

Arthur nodded.

“Long before she died.”

Detective Morris motioned toward the elevators.

They took the stairs instead.

On the fourth floor, the hallway was dark.

A door stood open.

Inside was a small records room.

Files had been pulled from shelves and scattered across the floor.

Mara saw Claire's name.

Arthur stopped.

“She kept copies.”

Detective Morris picked up a file.

“Northbridge employee records.”

Mara noticed a second folder.

Her own name was on it.

She froze.

“Why is my name here?”

Arthur approached.

The file contained photographs.

Mara entering a grocery store.

Mara walking with Eli.

Mara sitting outside a school.

Mara at home.

Someone had been watching them for years.

Her hands shook.

“This started before today.”

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.”

Detective Morris looked through the pages.

“Three years of surveillance.”

Mara turned to Arthur.

“Why?”

Arthur's expression was grim.

“Because someone needed to make sure you kept believing Eli was your son.”

Mara felt the words like a physical blow.

“He is my son.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Yes.”

Mara swallowed.

“No matter whose blood runs through him.”

Arthur nodded.

“That is exactly what Claire wanted.”

Mara stared at him.

“How do you know?”

Arthur picked up a letter.

The handwriting was Claire's.

He read it silently.

Then handed it to Mara.

It said:

IF THEY EVER TRY TO TAKE ELI FROM THE WOMAN WHO RAISED HIM, REMEMBER THIS: A CHILD DOES NOT BECOME LESS LOVED BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE SHARES HIS BLOOD.

Mara's eyes filled.

Claire had written it before she died.

Before Mara had even met Daniel.

She read the rest.

Mara,

If you are reading this, then Daniel failed to keep the secret, or someone else found it first. I don't know who you are. I don't know what kind of mother you will become. But if Elias reaches you, protect him from everyone who believes his identity belongs to them.

Mara lowered the page.

“Claire knew.”

Arthur nodded.

“She planned for this.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Detective Morris raised her weapon.

Everyone froze.

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

His face was bruised.

His shirt was torn.

His hands were free.

Mara's breath caught.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

Then at Eli.

For a moment, his face broke.

He stepped forward.

Mara moved between them.

“Don't.”

Daniel stopped.

“I won't touch him.”

Arthur stared at him.

“You.”

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“I know.”

Arthur's voice shook.

“You took him.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because Claire asked me to.”

Arthur stared.

“That isn't what happened.”

“It is.”

“You lied to her.”

“I lied to everyone.”

Mara's voice was barely audible.

“Did you kill Claire?”

Daniel looked down.

“No.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Then who did?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Victor.”

The room went silent.

Daniel continued.

“Victor discovered what Claire had found at Northbridge. She had evidence that the company was creating identities for children whose parents could be controlled.”

Mara looked at Eli.

“Why children?”

“Because children without stable records could be placed under new identities.”

Arthur whispered, “For money.”

Daniel nodded.

“Rich families paid for them.”

Mara felt sick.

“And Elias?”

“Claire found out her own son had been entered into the system.”

Arthur stared.

“Why?”

“Because Victor wanted to use him as proof that the system worked.”

Mara shook her head.

“And you?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I was supposed to deliver Elias.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at Mara.

“Because I couldn't.”

Mara's eyes filled.

“You married me.”

“Yes.”

“You made me believe he was ours.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me love him.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“I watched you save him.”

Mara stared.

Daniel continued.

“Claire knew she was in danger. She asked me to find a woman who would raise Elias without knowing the truth until he was safe.”

“Why me?”

“Because Anna knew you.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“Anna was part of this.”

“She was trying to protect you.”

“Did she know?”

“Yes.”

Mara looked at Daniel.

“Did you ever love me?”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I didn't expect to.”

That was not the answer she wanted.

But it sounded true.

“And then?”

“I did.”

Arthur looked away.

Mara took a slow breath.

“What happened to Claire?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Victor confronted her.”

“Where?”

“At the house.”

“Did you see him?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell the police?”

“Because Victor threatened Elias.”

“And you believed him?”

“I had already failed Claire.”

Mara stepped closer.

“You didn't fail her.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I left her alive.”

Arthur stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

“I ran.”

The confession hung in the room.

Daniel continued.

“Claire was alive when I left.”

Arthur's face hardened.

“Then I found her.”

“Yes.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Victor had someone watching you.”

Arthur looked stunned.

Daniel lowered his head.

“I knew if I told you everything, they would follow you to Elias.”

Mara understood.

The lies had not all been for the same reason.

Some had protected the secret.

Some had protected the child.

Some had protected Daniel himself.

None had been fair to her.

A crash came from downstairs.

Detective Morris touched her radio.

“Victor.”

Daniel's face changed.

“He found us.”

Mara grabbed Eli.

Arthur moved beside her.

Detective Morris ordered everyone toward the secured stairwell.

But before they could move, the lights went out.

A single emergency light flickered red.

Eli began crying.

Mara held him close.

Then a voice came through the darkness.

“Give me the boy.”

Victor.

Daniel whispered, “Don't.”

Mara stood behind Arthur.

Victor's footsteps approached.

Arthur whispered to her.

“When I tell you, run.”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

Arthur looked at her.

“This isn't your fight.”

She tightened her arms around Eli.

“Yes, it is.”

The emergency light flickered again.

Victor appeared at the end of the hallway.

He held up a photograph.

Claire.

Alive.

Standing beside Elias.

Victor smiled.

“Your husband never told you the final part.”

Mara stared.

“What?”

Victor raised the photograph.

“Claire wasn't trying to save the boy from me.”

He looked at Arthur.

“She was trying to save him from his grandfather.”

Arthur went completely still.
