They did not leave the hidden passage immediately.
Lily's father wanted to call the police.
Michael agreed.
Daniel disagreed.
“Not yet.”
Claire looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because whoever built this passage expected someone to find it.”
Her father frowned.
“You think it's a trap.”
“I think we don't know enough.”
Lily looked at the photographs.
“Then we find out.”
Her father shook his head.
“No more searching tonight.”
Lily knew that tone.
It meant the decision had already been made.
They returned home.
The photographs were handed to investigators.
Forensic examination found something unexpected.
The paper used for the photographs came from an old printing supplier that had gone out of business nearly fifteen years earlier.
The ink was even older.
Some photographs had been printed recently.
Others were decades old.
The investigator explained that the old images had probably been copied from negatives that someone had stored for years.
That meant the surveillance had not necessarily begun recently.
It could have been happening for decades.
Lily thought about Michael.
He had disappeared decades earlier.
Her father had disappeared two years ago.
Her grandmother had been watched.
The same network kept appearing.
But there was still no clear explanation for why Lily herself had been photographed as a child.
One evening, Michael came to the house carrying an old metal suitcase.
“I found this in my storage room.”
Lily looked at it.
“What's inside?”
“Things I never had the courage to open.”
He placed it on the table.
The lock was broken.
Inside were notebooks, receipts, photographs, and a cassette tape.
Her father picked up the first notebook.
The first page contained Michael's handwriting.
He had recorded everything he knew about A.K. Holdings.
Names.
Dates.
Meetings.
Addresses.
Then Lily found a page that mentioned Button.
She read it aloud.
“Object transferred to family residence.”
Her father took the notebook.
“What date?”
Lily pointed.
The date was the day before her father gave her the bear.
Michael stared.
“I didn't know this.”
Her father looked at him.
“Neither did I.”
Claire sat down.
“Who transferred it?”
The notebook gave no name.
Only initials.
A.K.
Lily looked at Button.
“The bear wasn't originally yours?”
Her father shook his head.
“No.”
“Then where did you get him?”
“I bought him at a small shop.”
“When?”
“Three days before I gave him to you.”
Lily frowned.
“Why did you choose that one?”
Her father smiled.
“Because you liked him.”
“That isn't the whole answer.”
“No.”
He remembered.
“The shop owner said someone had brought several old toys there after clearing out a storage unit.”
Lily's stomach tightened.
“Whose storage unit?”
He didn't know.
Michael looked at the notebook.
“Maybe the toys were part of the old records.”
“Records hidden inside toys?”
“Not impossible.”
Lily opened Button's remaining seams.
There was nothing.
Her father examined the bear.
“The original key is gone.”
“Yes.”
“But the lining was replaced.”
“By whom?”
Lily thought.
Her grandmother had repaired Button once.
No.
Her father had done it.
But the second seam had remained hidden.
Michael leaned forward.
“Look at the stitching.”
The thread was different.
It had been replaced by someone else.
Lily stared.
A tiny symbol had been sewn beneath the fabric.
A red circle.
A.K.
The same mark.
The family sat in silence.
Her father finally said, “Someone modified Button after I bought him.”
“But why?”
“To make sure the evidence survived.”
Lily looked at him.
“Who?”
They did not know.
The cassette tape provided another clue.
Michael played it.
A man's voice spoke.
It was not Keller.
It was not Michael.
It was not Marcus.
The voice sounded calm.
“You will eventually find the records.”
Michael's old recording contained only one side of the conversation.
The voice continued.
“When you do, don't trust the obvious villain.”
The tape ended.
Lily looked at her father.
“That sounds like a warning.”
“Yes.”
“Or a threat.”
“Yes.”
The investigator returned the next morning.
He had identified the red-circle symbol.
It appeared in several old corporate files.
It was not the company logo.
It was an internal code.
The letters A.K. referred to an archive system, not a person.
The archive was divided into numbered rooms.
Room 17.
Room 42.
Others.
Lily's father stared.
“So the doors were part of the archive.”
“Exactly.”
“Where are the other rooms?”
The investigator placed a map on the table.
Most had been demolished.
One remained.
Room 9.
It was beneath an old courthouse annex.
Lily recognized the address.
The same courthouse where they had found Michael's old records.
Her father immediately said, “We're going.”
The investigator stopped him.
“This time, we're going together.”
They arrived that afternoon.
The annex had been closed for renovations.
A security officer let them enter with official authorization.
Room 9 was below ground.
The door had no handle.
Only a small metal plate.
Lily touched it.
The red-circle symbol was engraved there.
Michael looked at her.
“Button.”
She held the bear near the plate.
Nothing happened.
Her father examined the wall.
“Maybe the key.”
“The red key?”
“It was destroyed.”
“No,” Lily said.
Everyone looked at her.
She reached into her pocket.
She had kept the tiny red key in a small jewelry box.
She had never thrown it away.
She inserted it.
The door clicked.
It opened.
Inside was a room filled with shelves.
At the center was a table.
On it sat a single envelope.
Lily's father opened it.
Inside was a photograph of their entire family.
Not from the anniversary.
From that morning.
The picture had been taken outside their house.
On the back:
YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG ARCHIVE.
Lily's father clenched the photograph.
“Whoever is doing this knows where we live.”
The investigator immediately called for security.
But Lily noticed something else.
Beneath the photograph was a handwritten map.
It showed one final location.
Not a building.
A house.
Michael recognized it.
“My old home.”
His face went pale.
“That house was demolished.”
Lily looked at the map.
“No.”
She pointed to a note written beneath it.
THE HOUSE WAS NEVER DEMOLISHED.
