PART 6 – The Evidence Was Finally in Their Hands, Yet One Familiar Name on the Documents Threatened to Tear the Family Apart

They reached Daniel's car without turning on the lights.

Everyone climbed inside.

Daniel started the engine and drove away from the records office with the headlights off until they reached the main road.

Only then did he switch them on.

Lily sat between Claire and her father.

She kept looking at him as if he might disappear if she blinked.

Her father noticed.

“You can sleep.”

“I don't want to.”

“Why?”

“Because you might be gone when I wake up.”

He looked down.

“I understand.”

Claire reached across Lily and took his hand.

He squeezed hers.

It was the first time Lily had seen them touch since he returned.

She turned toward the window.

Outside, the town passed in blurred patches of yellow light.

Daniel drove toward an old farmhouse belonging to his uncle.

Nobody spoke until they were safely inside.

The farmhouse smelled of wood smoke and coffee.

Daniel locked the doors.

Her father placed the original records on the table.

The documents were yellowed, stamped, signed, and dated.

Daniel spread them out.

“This is enough to start.”

“Start what?” Lily asked.

“A case.”

Claire looked at her husband.

“And if the people behind this find out?”

“They already know.”

Her father sat down.

“Then we stop hiding.”

Lily looked at him.

“Why did you hide for so long?”

He was quiet.

“Because the first person I trusted betrayed me.”

“Who?”

He looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face tightened.

“I never betrayed you.”

“You gave them access to my files.”

“I thought they were investigating the same thing.”

“They weren't.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know.”

Lily looked at the two men.

“You worked together.”

“Yes,” her father said.

“And then you stopped trusting each other.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel answered this time.

“Because your father believed I had helped them.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Her father leaned back.

“I was wrong.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You should have said that two years ago.”

“I didn't have the chance.”

The farmhouse became quiet again.

Then Claire noticed something on the table.

A name.

She pointed.

“That's my brother's company.”

Lily looked at Sophie.

“No,” Claire said. “Not Sophie's. Our brother's.”

Her father picked up the document.

“This company transferred three properties.”

“To whom?”

He read the name.

“Marcus Hale.”

Lily felt cold.

Marcus.

The man in the gray suit.

The man who had warned them.

The man who had given her the envelope.

“He has the property,” Lily said.

Her father nodded.

“Some of it.”

“But he helped us.”

“He may have.”

“Then why is his name here?”

Nobody answered.

The phone on the table rang.

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared at it.

The caller ID showed an unknown number.

Her father answered.

“Hello?”

Static.

Then Marcus's voice.

“You found him.”

Her father stood.

“Where are you?”

“Not far.”

“You used Lily.”

“No.”

“You sent her to Room 17.”

“I sent the warning.”

“Why?”

“Because they were already coming.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Who?”

Marcus's voice softened.

“The people your husband was investigating.”

Her father looked at Lily.

“What do they want?”

“The original records.”

“We have them.”

“I know.”

Marcus paused.

“And now they know you have them.”

The call ended.

Daniel cursed under his breath.

Lily stared at the phone.

“Can we trust him?”

Her father shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Claire picked up the documents.

“We need to make copies.”

Daniel nodded.

“Tomorrow.”

“Tonight,” Lily said.

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the recorder.

“Dad said proof is only useful if someone speaks.”

Her father smiled sadly.

“She remembers everything.”

Claire gave a small laugh.

“She always has.”

They spent the next hour copying the documents.

Lily sat nearby with Button in her lap.

Her father occasionally looked at her.

Each time, she smiled.

Near midnight, Daniel discovered another page hidden beneath the original records.

It contained a list of names.

Some were crossed out.

Some were circled.

One name was marked with a red line.

Claire.

Her father went still.

“What is it?”

He didn't answer.

Lily looked at the page.

“Mom?”

Claire took it.

Her hands began to shake.

“My name.”

Her father nodded.

“They were watching you.”

“When?”

“Before I disappeared.”

Claire looked at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I knew you'd stay.”

“I would have.”

“Exactly.”

She pushed the paper toward him.

“I deserved the choice.”

“Yes.”

His voice was barely audible.

“You did.”

Lily watched them.

She understood something then.

Adults often called secrecy protection.

Sometimes it was.

Sometimes it was fear wearing another name.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Daniel stood immediately.

“Someone's here.”

Her father moved Lily behind him.

Claire turned off the lamp.

They listened.

Another creak.

Then silence.

Daniel went toward the stairs.

A window shattered.

Everyone jumped.

A stone landed on the floor.

Attached to it was a piece of paper.

Her father picked it up.

There were only four words.

YOU HAVE UNTIL DAWN.

Claire looked at him.

“What happens at dawn?”

He read the message again.

“They expose the evidence.”

Daniel frowned.

“That sounds like a threat.”

“It is.”

Lily looked at the documents.

“What if we expose it first?”

Her father looked at her.

“We could.”

“Then do it.”

He smiled.

“It's not that simple.”

“Why?”

“Because the evidence has to reach someone who can act on it.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“I know someone.”

“Who?”

“A journalist.”

Claire shook her head.

“Can we trust her?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“She was investigating the same company.”

Her father gathered the documents.

“Then we leave now.”

They packed everything into one bag.

Lily picked up Button.

Her father stopped her.

“Wait.”

He examined the bear's torn seam.

“There is still something inside.”

“What?”

He reached carefully into the lining.

His fingers found a small piece of paper.

He pulled it free.

Lily stared.

It was another note.

Her father's face changed as he read it.

“What does it say?” Claire asked.

He handed it to her.

Claire read aloud.

“THE PERSON WHO STARTED THIS IS SOMEONE YOU LOVE.”

No one spoke.

Daniel looked at Claire.

Claire looked at her husband.

And Lily realized the final secret might not be about who had disappeared.

It might be about who had never left.
