Daniel did not sleep that night.
The voice on the telephone had lasted less than five seconds.
Yet he could still hear it.
He wrote down every detail he could remember.
The tone.
The pause.
The slight rasp at the end of the sentence.
Mara watched him from the doorway.
“You recognize him.”
“I think so.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
She walked over and sat beside him.
“Then don't force it.”
“I have to.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You don't have to solve every mystery tonight.”
He nodded.
But neither of them believed he would stop.
The next morning, Daniel called Adrian.
Adrian arrived within an hour.
When Daniel described the voice, Adrian's expression changed.
“You heard him too?”
Daniel stared.
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I didn't know whether it mattered.”
“It matters now.”
Adrian sat down.
“What did he say to you?”
“That the ledger wasn't complete.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Same message.”
Adrian nodded.
“There is another account.”
“Do you know where?”
“No.”
“Who knows?”
Adrian looked at the table.
“Your father.”
“He's dead.”
“I know.”
Daniel understood.
His father's papers.
The records that had never been found.
They searched the house that afternoon.
Not the hidden room.
Not the basement.
The ordinary rooms.
The places nobody had thought to search because nothing about them looked secret.
Mara examined the study.
Evelyn searched the old filing cabinet.
Daniel opened drawers.
Then he noticed the bookshelf.
A row of books had always seemed slightly uneven.
He pulled one.
Nothing happened.
He pulled another.
A narrow panel shifted.
Mara looked over.
“You have got to be kidding.”
Behind the books was a shallow compartment.
Inside sat an envelope.
The paper was yellowed.
Daniel opened it.
His father's handwriting filled the first page.
If you're reading this, then the people who protected you have finally stopped hiding the truth.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“He knew.”
Mara leaned closer.
The letter explained that Daniel's father had discovered two accounts.
One contained the company's legitimate assets.
The second held money Victor had secretly moved.
But the second account was not controlled by Victor.
It was controlled by someone else.
Someone Victor feared.
Daniel read the name.
Then stopped.
Mara waited.
“Who?”
Daniel turned the page.
The account belonged to Evelyn.
Mara stared.
“No.”
Evelyn entered the doorway.
She had heard.
“What?”
Daniel handed her the letter.
She read it.
Her face changed.
“I never opened that account.”
“Dad says you did.”
“I didn't.”
Mara looked at her.
“Mom.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I swear.”
Adrian entered behind them.
He looked at the letter.
Then at Evelyn.
“Victor used her identity.”
Evelyn looked up.
“How do you know?”
“Because I found the original bank application.”
“Where?”
“In the storage facility.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then why did Dad write that she controlled it?”
“Because he suspected someone had stolen her identity.”
Mara looked between them.
“So the account wasn't hers.”
“No.”
Daniel continued reading.
His father's letter explained that he had discovered Victor's scheme but had not known who was behind the second account.
He had planned to confront Victor.
He never got the chance.
Daniel lowered the letter.
“Then who?”
Adrian pointed to a signature.
“There.”
Daniel looked.
A second name appeared.
Samuel Hart.
Mara's face tightened.
“Hart?”
Adrian nodded.
“He wasn't just Victor's doctor.”
Daniel felt the pieces align.
“He controlled the second account.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor needed someone outside the family.”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“And the person who called me?”
Adrian shook his head.
“Could be Hart.”
“No.”
Daniel's voice was certain.
“I know that voice.”
He looked at the letter again.
“It belongs to someone else.”
Mara asked, “Who?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The voice returned.
A memory followed.
His father arguing with someone in the study.
A man saying, “You should have stayed out of this.”
Daniel had heard it before.
Not at the river.
Years earlier.
The voice belonged to his father's business partner.
A man named Robert Hale.
Mara frowned.
“Who is Robert Hale?”
“My father's old accountant.”
Evelyn's face changed.
“He disappeared after your father's death.”
Daniel stood.
“Where did he go?”
“No one knows.”
Adrian looked at the letter.
“Then we know where to start.”
They found Robert two days later.
He was living under his middle name in a quiet coastal town.
He did not run.
When Daniel entered the small café where they had agreed to meet, Robert looked older than his memories suggested.
He stood slowly.
“You look like your father.”
Daniel sat.
“You called me.”
Robert nodded.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Because the second account was never about money.”
Daniel waited.
Robert continued.
“It was insurance.”
“Against what?”
“Against Victor.”
Robert explained that Daniel's father had discovered Victor's theft but realized Victor had enough influence to destroy the evidence.
So he created the second account as a trap.
Every payment Victor made was recorded.
Every transfer created a trail.
The money was never meant to disappear.
It was evidence.
Mara looked at Robert.
“Then why did Victor keep using it?”
“Because he didn't know.”
Daniel understood.
“My father planned to expose him.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Your father died before he could.”
Daniel looked down.
“Did Victor kill him?”
Robert hesitated.
“I cannot prove it.”
“But you believe it.”
“Yes.”
Daniel accepted the distinction.
“What about Adrian?”
“Adrian found the records.”
“And Victor attacked him.”
“Yes.”
Robert reached into his coat.
He removed a small memory card.
“This contains copies of everything.”
Daniel stared at it.
“Why keep it?”
“Because your father asked me to.”
Mara looked at Daniel.
“Then this is finally over.”
Robert shook his head.
“Not quite.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
Robert pointed toward the memory card.
“There is one recording you need to hear.”
That evening, they played it.
Daniel's father's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, Daniel, then I failed to protect you.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father's voice continued.
“Do not trust anyone who tells you fear is the same thing as love.”
Mara looked at Evelyn.
The message continued.
“Your mother will try to protect you. Victor will try to control you. Adrian will try to save you. None of them can decide what you need.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
His father spoke one final sentence.
“When the truth comes, choose it yourself.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel smiled faintly.
“That sounds like him.”
Mara took his hand.
The phone rang again.
This time, Daniel answered immediately.
Robert's voice came through.
“I forgot one thing.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“The person who made the final payment from the second account wasn't Hart.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Who was it?”
Robert was silent.
Then he said,
“Your father.”
