PART 6 – Claire Told Them What Happened Beside the River, but Her Confession Raised a More Terrifying Question About Who Had Returned Home

Claire refused to sit.

She stood beside the hospital bed with her arms folded, watching Daniel as though she expected him to disappear.

Mara kept her distance.

Evelyn had gone completely silent.

Daniel broke the silence.

“Tell me who I am.”

Claire looked at him for a long time.

“You're Daniel.”

Mara frowned.

“That sounds simple.”

“It isn't.”

Daniel waited.

Claire finally said, “The man who came home six years ago was Daniel.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Claire continued, “But he had been through something that changed his memory.”

Daniel touched the scar beneath his collar.

“The surgery.”

“Yes.”

“Who performed it?”

“Dr. Hart.”

Mara looked at Evelyn.

“You said he disappeared.”

“He did.”

Claire shook her head.

“He disappeared because Victor ordered him to.”

Daniel stared at Claire.

“Why?”

“Because Hart knew what happened to you.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“What happened?”

Claire walked to the shelf and removed an old file.

“After the accident, Daniel suffered severe head trauma. Adrian found him first. He took him to Hart because the hospital would have notified the police.”

“Why were they hiding me?”

“Because Victor had already threatened them.”

Mara asked, “Threatened them with what?”

Claire opened the file.

“Your father's financial records.”

Mara frowned.

“My father?”

“Your father discovered Victor was stealing from the company. Adrian helped him collect evidence.”

Daniel looked at the papers.

“And I helped Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“Then why was Adrian killed?”

Claire looked down.

“He wasn't supposed to be.”

Silence.

“What does that mean?” Daniel asked.

“Victor wanted the records. Adrian refused to give them up. He arranged to meet Daniel at the river.”

“Then what happened?”

“Victor followed them.”

Daniel's breathing changed.

Images flickered through his mind.

Headlights.

Rain.

Adrian shouting.

Victor holding something heavy.

Daniel falling.

Mara noticed his expression.

“Daniel?”

He whispered, “I remember.”

Everyone went still.

“I remember Adrian.”

“What did he say?” Claire asked.

Daniel stared at the floor.

“He told me to run.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Daniel continued.

“Victor hit me.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“I fell.”

He touched his head.

“Adrian tried to help me.”

Claire nodded.

“Then Victor struck him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Did Adrian die?”

Claire hesitated.

“No.”

Mara's eyes widened.

“You just said—”

“He was alive when Victor left.”

“Then who killed him?”

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“That's the part she never told you.”

Evelyn's face crumpled.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mom?”

Evelyn whispered, “I found Adrian.”

“When?”

“After Victor left.”

“Was he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he die?”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“Because I made a choice.”

Mara stared at her.

“What choice?”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Adrian begged me to take you away.”

Daniel's face went still.

“He knew Victor would come back.”

“So you took me?”

“Yes.”

“And Adrian?”

“I stayed with him.”

“Then what happened?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I heard Victor's car.”

She closed her eyes.

“I hid.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You left him.”

“I was afraid.”

Mara whispered, “Mom.”

“I thought Victor would kill me too.”

Claire stepped forward.

“He did not kill Adrian.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“No.”

Claire's voice hardened.

“Because Adrian was alive when the ambulance arrived.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“What ambulance?”

“The one I called.”

Mara's eyes widened.

“Then why wasn't Adrian taken to a hospital?”

Claire looked toward the floor.

“Because Victor stopped it.”

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“How?”

“He had police contacts.”

Mara understood.

“They made the death look different.”

Claire nodded.

“The official story said Adrian died immediately.”

Daniel looked sick.

“And me?”

“You were taken to Hart.”

“By whom?”

Claire answered, “Me.”

Daniel stared.

“You?”

“I thought I was helping you.”

“What happened after?”

“You woke for a few minutes.”

“What did I say?”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“You kept asking for Adrian.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“And then?”

“Victor came.”

Mara whispered, “He found you.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“Victor told us that if Daniel remembered, he would kill Mara.”

Mara's breath caught.

“I wasn't even involved.”

“You were his daughter.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“So you agreed to erase my memory?”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“Evelyn refused.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Then who did it?”

“Dr. Hart.”

Mara's face tightened.

“He performed the surgery.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor threatened his family.”

Daniel stared at the scar.

“Did it work?”

Claire gave a sad smile.

“Too well.”

Daniel touched his temple.

“What happened after I woke?”

“You thought you were Daniel.”

“I am Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“But I couldn't remember Adrian.”

“No.”

“Or Victor.”

“No.”

“Or the river.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at Mara.

“And then I met her.”

Claire nodded.

“Victor watched you.”

Mara felt cold.

“What?”

“He wanted to know whether you would remember.”

Daniel stared.

“He watched us?”

“For years.”

Mara looked toward Evelyn.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

Claire said, “He stopped watching when he became sick.”

“Victor died.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are we still being followed?”

Claire hesitated.

“Because Victor wasn't the only person who knew.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Who else?”

Claire looked at the medical files.

“Dr. Hart.”

Mara shook her head.

“You said he disappeared.”

“He did.”

“Then where is he?”

Claire took out a photograph.

She placed it on the table.

The photograph showed an older man standing outside a clinic.

Daniel stared.

“That was taken last month.”

Mara looked at the date.

It was recent.

“He's alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Claire pointed to an address.

Daniel picked up the paper.

“Why would he still be involved?”

Claire's voice dropped.

“Because the memory surgery wasn't the only thing he did.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What else?”

Claire answered slowly.

“He changed your medical records.”

Mara frowned.

“Why?”

“So that nobody would ever know what happened to you.”

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then he noticed something.

In the background of the clinic stood a black car.

The same model he had seen in his memory.

His breathing stopped.

“That car.”

Claire nodded.

“It belongs to Hart.”

Daniel looked toward the tunnel.

“And the second key?”

Claire's expression changed.

“It opens his clinic.”

Mara looked at the key.

“Then why did my father have it?”

Claire answered quietly.

“Because your father knew Hart was involved before he died.”

Evelyn stepped toward them.

“There is something else.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

Evelyn reached inside her coat.

She removed a folded letter.

“I received this three days before your father died.”

Daniel took it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His father's.

Mara read over his shoulder.

If Daniel ever comes back, do not let him find the ledger until he remembers why Adrian trusted him.

Daniel stared at the final line.

“What ledger?”

Claire's face changed.

“The original ledger.”

“Where is it?”

Evelyn whispered, “With Daniel.”

Mara looked at him.

“How?”

Evelyn pointed to his wrist.

“The watch.”

Daniel froze.

He removed the watch.

For six years, he had believed it belonged to his father.

Now he noticed a tiny latch beneath the back plate.

He opened it.

Inside was a folded strip of paper.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Daniel and Adrian standing beside the river.

On the back was one sentence.

Daniel, if you forget everything, remember this: you were never the one I feared.

Daniel looked up.

Claire was crying.

Mara stared at the photograph.

“Then who was Adrian afraid of?”

Claire answered.

“Evelyn.”
