PART 3 – Rosa Revealed the Address She Had Hidden for Years, but Visiting Sloan Forced the Family to Hear a Version of Daniel’s Story Nobody Expected

Richard Sloan lived in a quiet neighborhood forty minutes from the city.

His house was smaller than Elena expected.

There were no signs of wealth.

No company plaques.

No polished driveway.

Just a narrow porch, a dead flower bed, and a faded chair beside the front door.

Rosa remained in the car.

"I can't go."

Elena looked at her.

"You don't have to."

Mateo opened the door.

"I'll go."

Elena followed.

They knocked.

After nearly a minute, the door opened.

An elderly man stood there.

His eyes moved from Elena to Mateo.

Then stopped.

"Daniel's grandson."

Mateo froze.

"You know me?"

Sloan nodded.

"I've seen photographs."

"From my grandfather?"

"From your mother."

Elena's expression hardened.

"You've spoken with Rosa?"

"Once."

"When?"

"Years ago."

Sloan stepped aside.

"If you're here about Daniel, come in."

The house smelled of old books and coffee.

A newspaper lay folded on the table.

Sloan sat slowly.

Mateo remained standing.

"What did my grandfather know?"

Sloan looked at him.

"Enough to frighten himself."

"What did you do?"

Sloan took a long breath.

"I threatened him."

Elena's jaw tightened.

"Why?"

"Because my employer ordered me to."

"Did you threaten his family?"

"Yes."

Mateo stepped closer.

"What exactly did you say?"

Sloan looked at him.

"I told him that if he released the documents, his wife could lose her job."

Rosa's voice came from the doorway.

"And you told him my son would disappear."

Sloan looked toward her.

"I remember."

Rosa's eyes filled with anger.

"You remember?"

"I remember everything."

She walked inside.

"You made him afraid."

"Yes."

"You made him think they would hurt Mateo."

"Yes."

"Did you cause his illness?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"I did not."

Rosa stared at him.

Sloan continued.

"Your husband was already sick when I met him."

"Then why did he look terrified?"

"Because I told him what would happen if he talked."

Elena sat beside Rosa.

Mateo remained standing.

"What happened to the documents?"

Sloan pointed toward a cabinet.

"I gave them back."

Mateo frowned.

"To whom?"

"Your grandfather."

"Why?"

"Because I changed my mind."

Sloan opened the cabinet.

Inside was a folder.

He placed it on the table.

"Daniel came to me two days before he died."

Rosa looked shocked.

"He came here?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he asked me not to."

Rosa's face collapsed.

Mateo opened the folder.

Inside were copies of the environmental reports.

But there was something else.

A letter from Daniel.

Richard,

I know you are not the man who made this decision. But you are the man standing between the truth and the people who will suffer from it.

If you are willing to help, I will not expose your role.

Sloan looked down.

"I helped."

"How?"

"I copied the company's internal reports."

"Then why weren't they released?"

"Because Daniel died."

Mateo stared at him.

"What stopped you?"

Sloan's voice became quiet.

"Fear."

The same word appeared again.

Elena looked at him.

"You had evidence."

"Yes."

"You could have released it."

"Yes."

"But you didn't."

"No."

Mateo's anger was controlled now.

"Then what did my grandfather die believing?"

Sloan answered carefully.

"He believed the truth would eventually come out."

Mateo looked away.

"He shouldn't have had to wait."

"No."

Sloan handed him another envelope.

"Your grandfather left this for you."

Mateo stared.

"My grandfather knew I would come?"

"He hoped."

Inside was a letter addressed simply:

For Mateo, when you are ready.

Mateo read.

Daniel wrote about the years he had spent trying to protect his family.

He admitted that fear had changed his decisions.

He apologized for keeping secrets from Rosa.

He explained that he had wanted to tell Mateo everything, but his health had deteriorated too quickly.

Then came the line that broke Mateo.

You must never confuse silence with protection.

Mateo lowered the letter.

Elena put an arm around him.

Sloan looked ashamed.

"I should have told the truth when Daniel died."

"Why didn't you?"

"I thought someone else would."

Mateo looked at him.

"That's what everyone says."

Sloan nodded.

"You're right."

They left without saying goodbye.

In the car, Rosa stared through the windshield.

"Your father came here."

Elena touched her shoulder.

"You didn't know."

"No."

"Why did he hide it?"

Rosa's voice trembled.

"Because he thought he was protecting me."

Mateo looked at her.

"He was trying to protect all of us."

Rosa turned.

"That doesn't make it right."

"No."

For a while, nobody spoke.

Then Mateo opened Daniel's letter again.

A paragraph near the end had been folded inward.

He had missed it.

He read aloud.

There is one person I trusted with everything.

Elena leaned closer.

Who?

The next line answered.

Your grandmother.

Elena stopped breathing.

Mateo looked at her.

"Grandma?"

She shook her head.

"I didn't know."

The letter continued.

If she ever tells you she doesn't remember something, don't pressure her. There are things I asked her to forget because remembering them would put the family at risk.

Elena's face went pale.

Rosa stared.

"What did Dad ask you to forget?"

Elena closed her eyes.

At first, nothing came.

Then a fragment.

A rainy night.

Daniel standing in the kitchen.

A folder in his hand.

A man waiting outside.

Daniel saying, "If anything happens, take Mateo and leave."

Elena gripped the table.

"I remember."

Rosa leaned forward.

"What?"

"Your father gave me the documents."

Mateo's eyes widened.

"What documents?"

Elena looked toward the old desk upstairs.

"I thought I had destroyed them."

Rosa stared.

"You destroyed them?"

"I burned something."

"What?"

"I don't know."

Mateo stood.

"Grandma."

She looked at him.

"I remember the night."

"What happened?"

Elena's voice dropped.

"Your grandfather didn't die believing the documents were safe."

She swallowed.

"He died believing someone had stolen them."

Mateo's face changed.

"Who?"

Elena looked toward the window.

A car had just stopped outside.

Nobody recognized it.

A man remained behind the wheel.

Watching the house.

Rosa whispered, "Mom."

Elena stood.

"I think I know."
