PART 7 – The Abandoned Clinic Held the Missing File, but What Mara Found There Made Her Question Which Family Had Truly Been Hers

The clinic stood behind a row of shuttered shops on the edge of town.

Its sign had fallen years ago.

The windows were dusty, the paint had peeled from the doors, and weeds pushed through cracks in the pavement. Yet Mara recognized the entrance immediately.

She had seen it in the photograph.

Daniel parked across the street.

“You don't have to go in,” he said.

“Yes, I do.”

“Then I'm coming.”

Mara looked at him.

“If someone wanted us here, they may be watching.”

“I know.”

“And the baby stays with my sister.”

Daniel nodded.

For once, there was no argument.

They crossed the road.

The front door was unlocked.

Mara pushed it open.

A smell of dust and old disinfectant met them.

She stopped.

A memory flashed.

Her mother holding her hand.

A woman crying behind a closed door.

A newborn's cry.

Then a man saying, “Take her away.”

Mara gripped Daniel's arm.

“What did you remember?”

“My mother was here.”

They moved slowly through the corridor.

Rooms stood empty.

A broken examination table remained against one wall.

Then Mara saw a faded blue mark above a doorway.

ROOM 6.

She entered.

Inside was an old filing cabinet.

One drawer had been forced open.

Daniel crouched.

“Someone's been here recently.”

Mara saw fresh scratches around the lock.

She opened the drawer.

Most files were gone.

One remained.

Her name was written on it.

She lifted it carefully.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Then another.

Two certificates.

Both carried the same date.

Both listed the same mother.

But only one carried Mara's name.

The second child's name had been blacked out.

Mara's hands shook.

“Someone wanted this erased.”

Daniel examined the documents.

“There's a number here.”

“What number?”

“Patient identification.”

He compared it with the bracelet photograph.

It matched.

Mara stared.

“The bracelet wasn't my son's.”

“No.”

“It was mine.”

Daniel nodded.

“Someone attached your old identity to his current file.”

Mara suddenly understood.

“They're trying to make him look like me.”

“Why?”

“Because my identity is connected to the missing child.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Both froze.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Daniel whispered, “Stay here.”

“No.”

The footsteps stopped.

A man's voice came from outside.

“Mara.”

She recognized it.

Her father.

Daniel moved toward the door.

An older man stepped into the room.

His hair was gray, his face thinner than in the recording, but the eyes were unmistakable.

Mara could not speak.

Her father looked at her.

“I knew you would come.”

She finally whispered, “You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you abandoned us.”

“I had to.”

“You took my sibling.”

“I saved your sibling.”

“Where?”

He looked toward the old files.

“Alive.”

Mara's knees weakened.

“Where?”

“Safe.”

“For twenty-three years?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because the people who took children were still looking.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?”

Her father looked at him.

“Thomas wasn't the mastermind.”

“We know.”

“Your mother wasn't either.”

Mara stared.

“Then who?”

Her father closed his eyes.

“The person who ordered the transfers was Dr. Reed.”

Mara's breath caught.

“The doctor?”

“Yes.”

“But Mom trusted him.”

“She trusted the wrong man.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then why did you appear in the recording with him?”

“I was collecting evidence.”

“You let him believe you were helping.”

“I had no other way.”

Mara looked at the files.

“Where is my sibling?”

Her father hesitated.

“Closer than you think.”

“What does that mean?”

He pointed toward the birth certificates.

“Your sibling was never taken out of this city.”

Mara stared.

“Then where?”

“Your mother raised one child.”

She swallowed.

“Who?”

He looked directly at her.

“You.”

Mara's face tightened.

“And the other?”

“Someone else raised them.”

“Who?”

Before he could answer, a vehicle stopped outside.

The sound of tires against gravel.

Her father looked alarmed.

“They found us.”

Daniel moved toward the window.

Two people stepped out.

One was Dr. Reed.

The other was Thomas.

Mara's heart dropped.

Her father grabbed her arm.

“There's a hidden room behind the cabinet.”

“What?”

“Go.”

“No.”

“Now.”

Daniel pulled the filing cabinet aside.

A narrow doorway appeared behind it.

Mara stared.

“How did you know?”

“Because I built it.”

They slipped inside.

Her father stayed outside.

Mara heard shouting.

Then a crash.

Daniel pushed the hidden door closed.

They stood in darkness.

A small ventilation opening allowed a thin strip of light through.

Mara heard Thomas yelling.

“Where is the file?”

Her father's voice answered.

“You're too late.”

Then Dr. Reed spoke.

“The DNA records are gone.”

Mara looked at Daniel.

“What DNA records?”

His face had gone pale.

From inside the hidden room came the soft hum of an old machine.

Daniel found a switch.

A computer screen flickered on.

Folders appeared.

Mara moved closer.

One folder was labeled with her birth date.

Another was labeled:

TWIN IDENTIFICATION.

She opened it.

Two DNA profiles appeared.

One belonged to Mara.

The other belonged to an unnamed child.

Daniel whispered, “We can identify your sibling.”

Mara clicked the file.

The profile matched a person already stored in the system.

A name appeared.

Mara stared.

“No.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

The name belonged to someone they knew.

Someone who had been part of their lives for years.

Someone who had stood beside them without either of them understanding why.

Mara covered her mouth.

Behind the hidden door, footsteps approached.

Then her father's voice came through.

“Mara, listen to me.”

She looked toward the door.

“There is one more thing you must know.”

“What?”

“The child you thought was your sibling isn't the only person whose identity was changed.”

Mara's eyes widened.

Her father continued.

“Yours was changed too.”
