Daniel showed the photograph to the police officer without saying a word.
The officer studied it carefully, then asked, “When was this taken?”
“I don't know.”
“Who sent it?”
“Unknown number.”
“Did the sender make threats?”
Daniel repeated the message.
The officer nodded slowly.
“We'll send someone to the house.”
“Someone?”
“Two officers.”
Daniel stared at him.
“My baby nearly drowned in contaminated water.”
“I understand.”
“No. I don't think you do.”
Mara touched Daniel's arm.
“Let him work.”
The officer looked again at the photograph.
“Do you recognize the person in the window?”
Daniel shook his head.
Mara leaned closer.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“Zoom in.”
Daniel enlarged the image.
The figure was too blurred to identify. But behind it, on the bathroom wall, was something else.
A small rectangular object.
Mara's eyes widened.
“The medicine cabinet.”
Daniel frowned.
“What about it?”
“It was open.”
He looked at her.
“It wasn't open when we left.”
“I know.”
Daniel remembered the bathroom.
His mother had claimed she had gone to the cabinet for the thermometer.
The cabinet should have been closed.
But the photograph showed its mirror door hanging open.
The officer noticed.
“Was anything taken?”
“We don't know.”
“Then let's find out.”
They returned to the house with the officers.
The front door was locked.
No windows appeared broken.
Nothing obvious had been disturbed.
Yet the bathroom looked different.
Daniel entered first.
The medicine cabinet was still open.
Inside were ordinary things: bandages, pain relievers, thermometer, cotton swabs.
Then Mara noticed an empty space.
“What was there?”
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
“The old key.”
Daniel turned.
“What key?”
Evelyn's face tightened.
“My father's.”
“What did it open?”
“Nothing important.”
“That answer isn't going to work anymore.”
Evelyn sighed.
“It opened the storage room downstairs.”
Daniel stared at her.
“We have a storage room?”
“You do.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because your father sealed it.”
The officer looked interested.
“Sealed it how?”
“With a lock.”
“Where's the key?”
Evelyn looked at the empty space in the cabinet.
“Gone.”
They went downstairs.
The storage room was behind a narrow door beneath the staircase. Dust covered the frame. A heavy brass lock hung from the hasp.
It was open.
Daniel's pulse quickened.
The officer drew his flashlight.
“Stay behind me.”
They entered.
The room smelled of damp cardboard and old wood.
Boxes were stacked along the walls.
Family photographs.
Old tools.
Winter blankets.
A broken television.
And in the far corner, a wooden chest.
Daniel remembered it.
He had seen it once as a child.
His father had told him never to open it.
“What’s inside?” Mara whispered.
“I don't know.”
Evelyn said nothing.
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew.”
She lowered her head.
The officer opened the chest.
Inside were documents wrapped in plastic.
Property records.
Bank statements.
Letters.
And an envelope with Daniel's name written across it.
His hands shook as he picked it up.
“What is this?”
Evelyn whispered, “Your father left it.”
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
His father's handwriting covered it.
Daniel read silently.
The letter explained that years earlier, Thomas had been involved in a financial scheme with someone outside the family. Their father had discovered it and threatened to expose him.
But the letter contained something worse.
Daniel read the final lines twice.
Thomas had not acted alone.
Someone in the family had helped him.
Daniel looked up.
“Mom.”
Evelyn began crying.
“I'm sorry.”
“Did you help him?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
She shook her head.
“I can't.”
“You can.”
“I promised.”
“To whom?”
She did not answer.
The officer took the letter carefully.
“Mrs. Hale, we need the truth.”
Evelyn sat down on an old box.
“Your father believed Thomas was dangerous.”
Daniel swallowed.
“What did Thomas do?”
“He borrowed money.”
“That's it?”
“No.”
She looked at Mara.
“He stole from your father.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“How much?”
“Enough to destroy him.”
The room fell silent.
Then Mara noticed another envelope.
It had her name on it.
She stared.
“Why is my name here?”
Evelyn looked terrified.
“I didn't know that was there.”
Mara opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Mara as a young woman standing outside a small clinic.
Daniel looked over her shoulder.
“What is that?”
“I don't know.”
Mara turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten date.
And beneath it:
SHE KNOWS MORE THAN SHE REMEMBERS.
Mara went still.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mara?”
She shook her head.
“I've never seen this.”
The officer asked, “Do you recognize the clinic?”
Mara stared at the building.
Then something in her memory shifted.
A hallway.
A newborn crying.
A woman arguing with a man.
A silver bracelet.
She pressed her fingers to her temple.
“I was there.”
Daniel looked startled.
“When?”
“I don't remember.”
Evelyn stood abruptly.
“Put that away.”
Mara looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because it has nothing to do with you.”
“That photograph has my name on it.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain it.”
Evelyn opened her mouth.
A crash came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
The officer immediately moved toward the stairs.
Daniel followed.
Mara grabbed Evelyn's hand.
“Stay here.”
They reached the bathroom.
The window was open.
The curtain moved in the night air.
On the floor was a small object.
The missing brass key.
Beside it was a folded piece of paper.
Daniel opened it.
Three words were written inside.
ASK ABOUT THE BABY.
He stared.
Mara stepped beside him.
“What does it say?”
Daniel handed her the paper.
Her face changed.
“Why would someone say that?”
Neither of them answered.
Then Evelyn spoke from behind them.
“Because they know.”
Daniel turned.
“Know what?”
Evelyn looked at Mara.
“The baby isn't the first child this family tried to protect.”
Mara's breath caught.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“It means the story you think you know about your son begins before he was born.”
