NOTE: Daniel refuses to surrender Sarah's evidence. Crane's betrayal becomes clear, but a final message from Sarah reveals that the conspiracy reaches deeper than Northbridge.
The gunshot struck the metal locker beside Daniel's head.
Marcus shoved him down.
“Move!”
Daniel grabbed Lena.
They ran.
Crane fired again.
The bullet struck the concrete wall.
Michael tackled Crane from the side.
The two men crashed into the floor.
Daniel didn't stop.
He dragged Lena through the emergency exit.
Rain hit them as they stumbled into the parking lot.
A vehicle screeched around the corner.
Marcus jumped into the driver's seat.
“Get in!”
Daniel pushed Lena inside.
Michael followed.
Marcus accelerated.
For several minutes nobody spoke.
Then Daniel turned toward Michael.
“You're going to tell me everything.”
Michael nodded.
“I will.”
“You knew Crane was compromised?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Sarah was investigating?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Victor was involved?”
“I suspected.”
Daniel stared at him.
“That's not enough.”
“I know.”
Michael looked out the window.
“I was afraid.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone is afraid.”
“Because people disappeared.”
“Who?”
“Witnesses.”
“Sarah?”
Michael nodded.
“Others too.”
Daniel felt sick.
“What happened to them?”
“They were pressured. Threatened. Some lost jobs. Some left town.”
“Anyone killed?”
Michael didn't answer.
That was enough.
Marcus drove to a farmhouse outside the city.
It belonged to an old friend of his.
Nobody knew the address.
Inside, they locked every door.
Lena sat at the kitchen table.
Daniel put the laptop down.
“Open it.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Crane knows where it is.”
“He saw it.”
“He saw the laptop.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Then why are we sitting here?”
“Because the laptop isn't the evidence.”
Michael looked up.
“What?”
Marcus pointed at Lena.
“She is.”
Lena frowned.
“Me?”
“Sarah didn't leave the most important information on the computer.”
Daniel understood.
“She left it with Lena.”
Lena shook her head.
“I don't have anything.”
Marcus crouched beside her.
“Think carefully.”
Lena closed her eyes.
Then she remembered.
“When Mom was sick, she gave me a necklace.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What necklace?”
She reached beneath her shirt.
A small silver pendant hung around her neck.
Marcus examined it.
“That's it.”
He opened the pendant.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Daniel stared.
“Sarah hid evidence inside her daughter's necklace.”
Lena nodded.
They connected it to the laptop.
A video appeared.
Sarah was sitting in the same room as before.
But this time she looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, then I couldn't stop them.”
Daniel leaned closer.
Sarah spoke slowly.
“The people behind Northbridge don't care about money as much as they care about control.”
She explained that certain corporations had created an informal network.
They exchanged information.
They influenced investigations.
They manipulated witnesses.
They protected clients.
But Sarah had discovered the network's weakness.
Records.
Everything left a trail.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
Medical files.
Phone records.
Sarah had copied enough to expose them.
Then she named the person who had arranged the operation against her.
Victor Hale.
Daniel felt no surprise.
But Sarah added something unexpected.
“Victor is not the person giving orders.”
Daniel froze.
“He reports to someone else.”
A name appeared on the screen.
Evelyn Price.
Daniel's stomach dropped.
Sarah's closest friend.
The doctor who had signed her death certificate.
The woman Daniel had trusted with his grief.
“No.”
Michael looked at him.
“She knew.”
Sarah continued.
“Evelyn helped Northbridge access medical information. She convinced doctors that certain records were legitimate. She helped create the false narrative around my death.”
Daniel stood.
“Why?”
The video answered.
Evelyn's brother had been imprisoned years earlier.
Northbridge had offered to get him released.
In return, she cooperated.
But later she tried to leave.
They threatened her family.
Sarah had discovered this.
She wanted to help Evelyn escape.
Instead, Evelyn betrayed her.
Daniel turned away from the screen.
“How could she?”
Marcus said nothing.
The video continued.
“Daniel, I need you to hear this. Evelyn may not have wanted me dead.”
Sarah paused.
“But she gave them enough information to make it possible.”
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
It was Sarah's medical schedule.
Her exact movements.
Her medications.
Her appointment times.
Everything.
Daniel remembered the night Sarah died.
She had told him she was going to the clinic.
Evelyn had called afterward.
She had said Sarah's death was sudden.
Now Daniel understood how she had known so quickly.
The video ended.
Lena began crying.
“Mom knew she was going to die?”
Daniel knelt beside her.
“I don't think she knew exactly when.”
“But she knew they were coming.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't she tell us?”
Daniel hugged her.
“Because she wanted to keep us alive.”
A car appeared outside.
Marcus immediately stood.
“Someone followed us.”
They turned off the lights.
Headlights swept across the farmhouse.
Then the vehicle stopped.
A knock came at the door.
Three slow knocks.
Michael whispered:
“Who is it?”
A woman's voice answered.
“Daniel.”
He knew it.
Evelyn.
Daniel walked toward the door.
Marcus grabbed his arm.
“Don't.”
“She knows where we are.”
“That's why you don't open it.”
Evelyn spoke again.
“I know what Sarah left you.”
Daniel remained silent.
“I can help you.”
Marcus shouted:
“You already helped enough.”
Evelyn began crying.
“I made a mistake.”
Daniel looked through the window.
She stood alone in the rain.
No weapon.
No vehicle.
Nothing.
“Why are you here?”
“Because Victor is going to kill Lena.”
Daniel opened the door slightly.
Evelyn looked directly at him.
“He knows about the necklace.”
Daniel felt cold.
“How?”
“I told him.”
Silence.
“But I also stole something from him.”
“What?”
“A list.”
“What list?”
“The people he's going to eliminate.”
Daniel stared.
“Who is on it?”
Evelyn looked toward Lena.
“Your daughter.”
Daniel stepped outside.
“Give me the list.”
“I will.”
“Then why are you still standing there?”
“Because there's another name.”
“Whose?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Yours.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Who else?”
Evelyn looked toward Michael.
“Your brother.”
Michael stepped outside.
“Where is the list?”
She pulled an envelope from her coat.
Before she could hand it over, a gunshot cracked through the darkness.
Evelyn fell.
Daniel caught her.
Marcus pulled them back inside.
Michael slammed the door.
Lena screamed.
Evelyn was bleeding.
Daniel pressed his hand against the wound.
“Stay with me.”
She looked at him.
“I deserve what happens.”
“Not now.”
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“Sarah didn't know the whole truth.”
“What didn't she know?”
Evelyn struggled to breathe.
“The person who ordered her death wasn't Victor.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Evelyn's eyes closed.
Daniel shook her.
“Who?”
Her lips moved.
He leaned closer.
She whispered one name.
“Michael.”
Daniel froze.
His brother stood across the room.
Their eyes met.
Michael looked horrified.
“I didn't do it.”
Daniel couldn't speak.
Then the farmhouse window shattered.
Someone fired from outside.
Marcus pulled Lena to the floor.
Daniel looked at his brother.
For the first time in his life, he wondered whether the person standing beside him was the person who had destroyed his family.
