PART 3 – My Daughter Had Been Carrying Evidence in Silence, Yet the First Recording Revealed a Secret Far Worse Than the Divorce

Hailey wouldn't play the recording that night.

She held the tablet against her chest and shook her head.

“Not here.”

“Okay.”

“Not while Dad is nearby.”

“He isn't here.”

She glanced toward the window anyway.

“You don't understand.”

“Then help me understand.”

She swallowed.

“I've been scared for a long time.”

I wanted to reach for her.

I didn't.

Instead, I sat down.

“I'm here.”

She sat across from me.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then she unlocked the tablet.

The screen showed dozens of files.

Most were short.

Some had dates.

Some had no names.

She selected one.

Before pressing play, she whispered, “I didn't make this because I wanted to spy on him.”

“I know.”

“I made it because I didn't know what else to do.”

The recording began.

At first, there was only the sound of dishes.

Then Mark's voice.

“Your mother doesn't need to know about this.”

My entire body went still.

Hailey stopped the recording.

“That's why I saved it.”

“Play it.”

She hesitated.

I nodded.

The recording continued.

Mark was speaking to another person.

A man's voice.

I didn't recognize it.

“The divorce needs to happen quickly,” Mark said. “The longer we wait, the more complicated the property becomes.”

The other man asked something I couldn't make out.

Mark answered.

“She'll fight if she understands what I'm doing.”

I looked at Hailey.

Her face had gone pale.

The recording continued.

“And the custody issue?”

Mark's voice became quieter.

“I need her weakened.”

My stomach turned.

The recording stopped.

I couldn't breathe normally.

“Who was he talking to?”

“I don't know.”

“Do you know when this was?”

“Before your surgery.”

I stared at her.

“Before?”

She nodded.

“He was already planning everything.”

I wanted to deny it.

But I had seen the bank transfers.

The divorce papers.

The hidden folder.

The recording.

The evidence was beginning to form a pattern.

Then Hailey said something that changed the air in the room.

“That's not the worst recording.”

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

She didn't answer.

She opened another file.

This one was longer.

The first few seconds were muffled.

Then Mark spoke.

“Don't come into her room.”

A woman's voice answered.

“I need to talk to her.”

“No.”

“Mark—”

“I said no.”

Hailey's finger hovered over the screen.

She looked at me.

“I wasn't supposed to hear this.”

“Why?”

“Because they were talking about me.”

I felt the muscles in my shoulders tighten.

“About what?”

She pressed play.

The woman's voice became clearer.

“She's getting sick.”

Mark answered.

“She'll be fine.”

“She keeps asking questions.”

“She doesn't know anything.”

“Then make sure she stays quiet.”

The recording ended.

I stared at my daughter.

“Who was that woman?”

“I don't know.”

“Have you heard her before?”

She nodded.

“Several times.”

My mind raced.

“Where?”

“In the house.”

I couldn't make sense of it.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Hailey began crying.

“Because he said you wouldn't believe me.”

My chest tightened.

“I would have.”

“I know that now.”

She wiped her face.

“But before, I didn't.”

I moved closer.

“Tell me what happened.”

She looked at the floor.

“I don't know if I can.”

“You don't have to tell me everything tonight.”

She shook her head.

“I need to.”

She took a breath.

“He started coming into my room when you worked late.”

I felt the world narrow around her words.

“What did he do?”

She stared at her hands.

“He said things were wrong with me.”

“What things?”

“That I was difficult. That I was becoming disrespectful. That nobody would believe me if I complained.”

My fingers curled against my palm.

“Did he hurt you?”

She nodded.

Once.

Then again.

I didn't ask for details.

I couldn't.

I understood that whatever had happened was serious enough that she had been carrying it alone.

I called Elena.

She answered immediately.

“What's happened?”

I told her only what I could.

Her voice changed.

“Do not confront Mark.”

“I won't.”

“Do not warn him.”

“I won't.”

“Keep the device exactly as it is.”

“Okay.”

“And I want you and Hailey somewhere safe tonight.”

Amanda drove us to a hotel under Elena's instructions.

We packed quickly.

Hailey carried the tablet herself.

At the hotel, Elena contacted authorities.

Detective Morris arrived with another investigator.

They spoke to Hailey separately.

I sat outside the room with Amanda.

Every minute felt endless.

At one point, Amanda touched my shoulder.

“You're shaking.”

“I know.”

“You need to breathe.”

“I can't.”

“Yes, you can.”

I closed my eyes.

The surgery scar beneath my clothing ached.

For weeks, I had thought the greatest betrayal was Mark asking for divorce after taking my kidney.

Now I understood that I had been measuring the wrong wound.

The interview lasted more than an hour.

When the door opened, Hailey came out wearing a gray hoodie and looking exhausted.

Detective Morris approached me.

“We need to talk.”

I stood.

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

“What did she tell you?”

He exchanged a glance with the social worker beside him.

“We have enough information to investigate.”

My knees nearly gave way.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your daughter has described events that require immediate action.”

I looked toward Hailey.

She was watching us.

Detective Morris lowered his voice.

“We also reviewed the recording.”

“And?”

“It supports her account.”

My hand went to my mouth.

“Where is Mark?”

“Still at the house, as far as we know.”

“Then go there.”

“We are.”

I nodded.

Then Detective Morris said something that made me stop.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“We found evidence that someone entered your daughter's room repeatedly at night.”

My stomach dropped.

“Mark?”

“We don't know yet.”

“Then who?”

“That is what we're trying to determine.”

Before he could continue, Hailey called my name.

I turned.

She stood at the end of the hallway holding the tablet.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“There is one more file.”

I walked toward her.

“What does it show?”

She looked at Detective Morris.

Then at me.

“It shows Dad.”

She swallowed.

“But he's not alone.”
