PART 6 – Robert Walked Into the House Carrying a Story That Contradicted Everything Maya Had Been Told About Her Mother’s Final Night

Robert did not force the door.

That frightened Maya more than if he had.

He simply waited on the porch, one hand resting against the railing, as though he had all the time in the world.

Daniel stood beside the window.

“Why isn't he calling the police?”

His mother answered quietly.

“Because he knows they won't believe you.”

Maya looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because he has spent years making sure every piece of evidence points somewhere else.”

The doorbell rang again.

Robert spoke through the wood.

“I know you're inside.”

Maya stepped closer.

Daniel caught her wrist.

She looked at him.

“I need answers.”

“So do I.”

“You've had years.”

His expression tightened.

“That isn't fair.”

“No,” she said. “It isn't.”

She pulled her hand free.

Then she opened the door.

Robert stood there.

He was older than the man in the photograph, but unmistakably the same person.

His face was thinner.

His hair almost completely gray.

But his eyes were calm.

He looked directly at Maya.

“You have your mother's eyes.”

Maya's voice was cold.

“You knew her.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my father?”

“Yes.”

“You knew Daniel's father?”

“Yes.”

Robert looked past her.

“And you found the box.”

Daniel's mother stood.

Robert's expression softened.

“You kept it.”

She said nothing.

Robert sighed.

“I hoped you would never need it.”

Maya stepped outside.

“You don't get to talk like you're protecting us.”

Robert looked at her.

“I'm not.”

“Then what do you want?”

“The documents.”

“The trust?”

“The original agreement.”

Maya shook her head.

“No.”

Robert didn't react.

“You don't understand what it contains.”

“Then explain it.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Your father borrowed money.”

Daniel said, “I know.”

“No. You know the version he wanted you to know.”

Robert's voice remained calm.

“Your father didn't borrow three hundred thousand. He borrowed nearly two million.”

Daniel's face went pale.

“What?”

Robert continued.

“The company was drowning.”

Daniel's mother whispered, “Stop.”

Robert ignored her.

“Your father promised equity.”

Daniel stared.

“In exchange for the money.”

“Yes.”

“And when he refused?”

“He transferred assets secretly.”

Maya understood.

“The trust.”

Robert nodded.

“Your mother discovered the transfer.”

“So she moved it.”

“She tried.”

Maya watched him carefully.

“You said she tried.”

Robert looked at her.

“She succeeded.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Then why did she die?”

Robert's expression changed for the first time.

“I wasn't there.”

Claire came outside.

Robert saw her.

“You.”

Claire's face tightened.

“You remember me.”

“I remember everyone who worked for Victor.”

“I didn't work for Victor.”

“You delivered messages.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was your mother.”

Maya turned.

“You knew she was afraid?”

Robert nodded.

“She knew Victor planned to use your name.”

“Why didn't you stop him?”

Robert looked at her.

“Because I was trying to stop something worse.”

Maya almost laughed.

“Everyone has an excuse.”

Robert reached inside his coat.

Daniel moved immediately.

Robert stopped.

He slowly removed a folded document.

“Your mother gave me this.”

Maya stared.

“What?”

“Three days before she died.”

“Why would she give you anything?”

“Because she believed I was the only person Victor feared.”

Claire stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

Robert handed the paper to Maya.

It was a statement signed by Maya's mother.

She read it.

Her mother described the original trust.

She named Victor.

She named Robert.

She named Daniel's father.

But there was another name.

Maya's eyes stopped.

“Who is Evelyn?”

Daniel's mother closed her eyes.

Robert said nothing.

Maya looked at him.

“Who is Evelyn?”

Robert finally answered.

“Your mother's sister.”

Maya stared.

“I don't have an aunt.”

“You did.”

“She died before I was born.”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel's mother whispered, “She disappeared.”

Maya felt the room tilt.

“Why?”

Robert looked toward the street.

“Because she knew where the money came from.”

Maya read further.

Her mother had written that Evelyn had discovered something about the company.

Something involving forged transfers.

Something involving a secret account.

And then she had vanished.

Maya looked up.

“Where is she?”

Robert's answer was immediate.

“Dead.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I saw her grave.”

Maya stared at him.

“What does that have to do with my mother?”

Robert's expression hardened.

“Everything.”

He stepped inside.

Daniel blocked him.

“You're not coming in.”

Robert looked at him.

“You should ask your mother what she did the night your father died.”

Daniel turned.

His mother was crying.

“Mom?”

She shook her head.

Robert continued.

“She was there.”

Daniel stared.

“At the scene?”

“Yes.”

“You told me you were at home.”

“I lied.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Why?”

“Because your father asked me to.”

Robert said quietly, “Your father wasn't alone when he died.”

Maya looked at Daniel's mother.

“Who was with him?”

She finally answered.

“Your mother.”

Maya stopped.

“My mother was there?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The night he died.”

“Why?”

“Because he had discovered Robert's account.”

Robert corrected her.

“My account wasn't mine.”

Maya looked at him.

“What?”

“It belonged to Victor.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Then why did everyone call it Robert's account?”

“Because Victor needed someone else to blame.”

Daniel's mother nodded.

“He used Robert's name.”

Maya looked between them.

“So Robert wasn't the person controlling the money.”

“No,” Robert said.

“Victor was.”

“Yes.”

“But Victor is the one who forged my signature.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here?”

Robert looked at her.

“Because Victor is not the person who ordered it.”

Maya's breath caught.

“Who did?”

Robert stared at Daniel.

Then at his mother.

Then back at Maya.

“Someone who has been waiting for your inheritance to become available.”

Maya felt cold.

“Who?”

Robert didn't answer.

Instead, he pointed toward the street.

A second vehicle had stopped behind his.

A black SUV.

Ethan came running from the driveway.

“Daniel!”

Everyone turned.

Ethan was holding his phone.

“Victor is gone.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“The police found his car.”

“Where?”

“At the marina.”

Maya's heart sank.

“Is he alive?”

Ethan shook his head.

“They found blood.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Robert closed his eyes.

Maya looked at him.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You knew this would happen.”

“I feared it.”

“Who would kill Victor?”

Robert looked toward Maya's purse.

“The person who sent you the message.”

Maya froze.

She remembered the call.

The calm voice.

The threat.

She pulled out her phone.

There was a new message.

One sentence.

YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG HOUSE.

Maya showed it to Daniel.

Then another message arrived.

LOOK AT YOUR MOTHER'S LAST PHOTO.

Maya opened the photograph from the folder.

Her mother stood outside the hotel.

Maya zoomed in.

At first she saw nothing.

Then she noticed a reflection in the hotel window.

A man standing behind her mother.

Not Robert.

Not Victor.

Someone else.

Someone Maya recognized.

Her hands went numb.

Daniel saw her face.

“Who is it?”

Maya whispered the name.

“Ethan.”

Everyone turned.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

He looked confused.

“What?”

Maya held up the photograph.

“You were there.”

Ethan stared at it.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“I can explain.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“You were with Mom that night?”

Ethan's eyes filled with panic.

“No.”

Maya stepped closer.

“Then why are you in the photograph?”

Ethan looked at the image.

His expression changed.

“That isn't me.”

Maya studied the reflection.

The man had Ethan's height.

His hair.

His jacket.

But not his face.

Robert stepped closer.

He looked once.

Then his voice became very quiet.

“That is Victor's son.”

Claire shook her head.

“Victor had no son.”

Robert looked at her.

“He did.”

Maya stared at the photograph.

And suddenly the entire mystery changed.

Victor had not been working alone.

Someone else had been behind him.

Someone who had been watching her family for years.

Someone who knew about the trust.

Someone who knew where the original documents were.

Someone who now knew Maya had found them.
