PART 11 – The Records From Lily’s Birth Finally Explained the Hidden Connection, but the Truth Forced Mara to Reconsider What Daniel Had Been Protecting

The hospital records arrived two days later.

Mara sat at the dining table with Daniel, Sara, and the investigator on speakerphone.

Lily was at school.

Ben was outside playing with a neighbor.

Mara opened the file.

The first pages were ordinary.

Birth information.

Medical observations.

Routine signatures.

Then she reached the research authorization.

Dr. Elena Voss had been listed as an outside consultant for a memory-development study.

The study involved newborns whose families volunteered to participate.

Mara frowned.

“We never volunteered.”

The investigator answered, “That's what we're trying to establish.”

“There is no signature from me.”

“Correct.”

“What about Daniel?”

“No signature from him either.”

Mara turned the page.

A code appeared beside Lily’s name.

Not her name.

A number.

She looked at Daniel.

“What is this?”

He stared.

“I don't know.”

The investigator said, “That code appears in several archived documents.”

“Where?”

“Three hospitals. One private clinic. Two research facilities.”

Mara felt cold.

“Why?”

“We don't know.”

Sara leaned forward.

“Could it be medical?”

“Possibly.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“I remember the code.”

Mara’s heart began racing.

“Where?”

“On the ledger.”

She opened the original evidence copy.

They searched the pages.

There it was.

The same number.

Beside a payment.

Mara stared.

“What does it mean?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Not a patient.”

“Then what?”

“A project.”

The investigator went silent.

“What project?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't remember.”

Mara reached for his hand.

“Don't force it.”

He nodded.

The investigator said, “We're going to need to examine the original records.”

“You have them.”

“Yes.”

“Then find out.”

“We will.”

The next morning, Dr. Voss was located.

She was living under her own name in another city.

The investigators questioned her.

She denied involvement in Daniel’s kidnapping.

She admitted knowing him.

She admitted consulting at the hospital.

She denied ever threatening Mara.

She said the research project had been discontinued years earlier.

But one thing she confirmed was enough to change everything.

Lily had been included in the study without Mara’s consent.

Mara sat in the investigator’s office afterward.

“Why?”

Dr. Voss claimed the records had been falsified.

Someone had used her credentials.

Someone had selected certain children for observation.

Daniel’s discovery of the ledger had exposed the financial side of that operation.

The network was not simply making witnesses disappear.

It had been hiding illegal research and manipulating medical records.

Mara asked the investigator, “Was Lily harmed?”

“We don't have evidence of that.”

“That's not what I asked.”

He looked at her.

“We don't know.”

Mara appreciated the honesty.

But she hated the uncertainty.

Daniel sat beside her.

“I remember why they took me.”

Mara turned.

“Why?”

“I found the children’s list.”

“What children?”

“The ones they were tracking.”

Mara felt sick.

“Lily was on it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“I don't know.”

The investigator interrupted.

“Daniel, do you remember who created the list?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Dr. Voss didn't.”

“Who did?”

“A man.”

“Name?”

Daniel's breathing changed.

“Richard.”

Mara looked at him.

“Richard who?”

“I don't know.”

The investigator wrote it down.

“Where did you meet him?”

“Hotel.”

“When?”

“The night before I disappeared.”

Mara stared.

“Room 4A?”

Daniel nodded.

“He told me the ledger was only one part of it.”

“What was the other part?”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Children.”

The investigator leaned forward.

“What about them?”

“He said they were being watched because someone believed their families would become useful later.”

Mara felt a chill.

“Useful for what?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I never found out.”

The investigation widened.

For weeks, records were collected.

Some documents had been destroyed.

Others were hidden under false names.

The network had touched hospitals, private clinics, financial companies, and security firms.

But there was no evidence that Lily had been physically harmed.

That mattered to Mara.

She needed something she could hold onto.

One evening, Lily asked why everyone kept talking about old hospital papers.

Mara sat beside her.

“Sometimes adults make mistakes.”

“Did someone make a mistake with me?”

Mara hesitated.

“We're trying to understand what happened.”

Lily looked at Daniel.

“Dad knows.”

“He remembers some things.”

“Does he remember me?”

Daniel smiled.

“Yes.”

“All of me?”

He looked at her.

“Enough.”

Lily smiled.

“That’s okay.”

Mara watched them.

Children could sometimes accept imperfect answers more easily than adults.

Later that night, Daniel found Mara on the balcony.

“I remember Richard.”

She turned.

“What?”

“He wasn't a doctor.”

“Who was he?”

“A lawyer.”

Mara stared.

“Do you know his last name?”

Daniel nodded.

“Vale.”

Mara went still.

“Vale?”

“Yes.”

Her own family name.

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?”

Mara could not answer.

She had assumed the name meant nothing beyond marriage.

But Richard Vale.

A lawyer.

Connected to the ledger.

Connected to the research records.

Connected to Daniel’s disappearance.

And suddenly, another memory surfaced.

Years earlier, before she met Daniel, Mara had heard her father mention a distant relative named Richard.

She had never met him.

She had never thought about him again.

She called her mother.

The conversation lasted less than five minutes.

When Mara hung up, her hands were shaking.

Daniel looked at her.

“What did she say?”

“Richard Vale was my father's cousin.”

Silence.

Daniel sat down.

“That means he knew you before I did.”

Mara nodded.

“And he knew your family.”

“Yes.”

The pieces moved again.

The ledger.

The hospital.

Lily.

The hotel.

The woman with the silver ring.

The lawyer.

The network.

Mara suddenly understood why Daniel had once believed the danger came from someone who knew exactly how much she loved him.

Richard had known both of them.

He had known where Mara lived.

He had known about Lily.

He had known Daniel’s habits.

He had known what would make Daniel surrender.

The investigator arrived the next morning with another file.

“We found him.”

Mara stared.

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“He died four years ago.”

Mara sat down.

The investigator placed a document on the table.

“His estate was transferred through a shell company.”

“To whom?”

“We're still tracing it.”

Daniel picked up the paper.

He stared at one signature.

Then he whispered, “I know this.”

Mara looked.

The signature belonged to Dr. Elena Voss.

“She wasn't running it,” Daniel said.

“Then who was?”

Daniel looked at Mara.

“I think Richard was.”

“Was?”

Daniel pointed to the estate document.

“He died four years ago.”

Mara nodded.

Daniel's face tightened.

“Then someone took over.”

The investigator said, “That's our working theory.”

Mara looked at the document.

A second signature appeared beneath Richard’s.

The name was partially obscured by a fold.

She opened the page.

Her breath stopped.

It was Sara’s name.
