PART 6 – Claire Finally Met the Man Her Father Feared and Learned Why Her Childhood Had Been Built Around a Carefully Protected Lie

They stayed silent.

Downstairs, Claire's uncle called her name again.

He did not sound angry.

That made it worse.

He sounded patient.

As if he knew she would eventually come down.

Daniel moved toward the study door and slowly closed it.

Claire watched him.

“What are we going to do?”

“Leave through the balcony.”

She looked toward the window.

“We're on the second floor.”

“There is a terrace below.”

“That isn't a plan.”

“It is tonight.”

He opened the window.

Cold air entered the room.

Before Claire could follow, her uncle spoke again.

“I know you're holding your father's notebook.”

Claire froze.

Daniel looked at her.

“He knows.”

Her uncle continued.

“You should hear the truth before you decide what to believe.”

Claire walked toward the door.

Daniel caught her wrist.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“If he knows about the notebook, hiding won't change anything.”

“He wants you to think he knows everything.”

“Maybe he does.”

She pulled her hand free.

Daniel followed her downstairs.

Her uncle stood in the center of the foyer.

He was older than Claire remembered, but his posture remained straight. His dark coat was wet from the rain. He held no weapon.

His eyes went immediately to the notebook in Claire's hand.

“You found it.”

Claire stopped several feet away.

“You knew where it was.”

“Yes.”

“Did you kill my brother?”

“No.”

“Did you help fake his death?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

Claire's face hardened.

“Why?”

“Because Ethan asked me to.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You're lying.”

Her uncle looked at him.

“You've spent ten years investigating this and still don't understand what happened.”

“Then explain it.”

He looked at Claire.

“Your brother discovered that your father's business had been infiltrated. Money was being diverted through shell companies. Your father tried to expose it.”

“Who was behind it?”

“People above us.”

“Who?”

“Executives. Lawyers. Government contractors. Men who could make problems disappear.”

Claire shook her head.

“That doesn't explain Ethan.”

“It explains everything.”

Her uncle walked toward the staircase.

“Ethan found evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“A ledger.”

Claire held up the notebook.

“This?”

“No.”

He pointed at it.

“That was your father's record of the investigation.”

“Then where is the real ledger?”

Her uncle looked at Daniel.

“Ask him.”

Claire turned.

Daniel's face was rigid.

“What is he talking about?”

Daniel looked away.

Her uncle laughed bitterly.

“Still protecting her.”

Claire stepped toward Daniel.

“Tell me.”

“I don't have it.”

“Then who does?”

“Ethan.”

Claire's breath caught.

“He's alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Her uncle looked at her.

“I haven't seen him in years.”

Claire struggled to process it.

“Then why did you tell me you saved him?”

“Because I did.”

He explained that after the crash, Ethan had survived but was badly injured. Someone at the hospital recognized him. The network had already been watching him.

To keep him alive, Ethan disappeared.

The body identified as him was never conclusively proven to be his.

Claire listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she whispered, “And my father agreed?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because you were the leverage.”

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Her uncle's expression softened.

“Your family was being watched. Anyone who wanted the evidence could use you to reach your father.”

Daniel said quietly, “That's why I stayed close.”

Claire looked at him.

Her uncle nodded.

“Your father hired Daniel after the first attempt on your life.”

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“What first attempt?”

“The crash outside your university.”

Claire remembered it.

She had always believed the driver had lost control.

She remembered the shattered windshield.

She remembered Daniel arriving afterward.

She had thought he was simply a stranger who happened to help.

Now she understood.

“You were already there.”

Daniel nodded.

“I was following the car.”

Claire stared at him.

“And you never told me.”

“I was afraid that if you knew why I was there, you'd become more frightened.”

“You don't get to decide what I can handle.”

“I know.”

Her uncle stepped closer.

“There is something else.”

Claire looked at him.

“Your mother.”

The word alone silenced the room.

“She didn't die when you were two,” he said.

Claire's lips parted.

“She disappeared.”

“Where?”

“She went into hiding.”

“Why?”

“She discovered who you were.”

Claire looked confused.

“I still don't understand.”

Her uncle glanced at Daniel.

“Tell her.”

Daniel swallowed.

“You weren't supposed to be part of your father's family.”

Claire's face went blank.

“What?”

“Your father adopted you.”

“No.”

“He raised you. He loved you. But biologically, you were not his daughter.”

Claire stepped backward.

Her hand found the banister.

“Who am I?”

Her uncle answered.

“You are the daughter of the man who created the network your father was trying to destroy.”

Claire stared at him.

“No.”

“He died before you were born.”

“Who?”

“Victor Hart.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire heard the name.

Hart.

Evelyn Hart.

The name from the letter.

The name she had never recognized.

Her uncle continued.

“Your biological father built the financial structure that later became the network. Your mother escaped him when she discovered what he was doing.”

Claire's voice shook.

“My mother gave me to my father?”

“She gave you to the one man she trusted.”

“Why?”

“Because your biological father wanted you back.”

Claire covered her mouth.

The elegant house suddenly felt like a stranger's home.

The photographs.

The childhood stories.

The birthday memories.

Everything had been real.

But the foundation beneath them had not been.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire.”

She raised her hand.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

She looked at him.

“You knew.”

“I knew part of it.”

“How much?”

“That you were adopted.”

“When?”

“Before we married.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You knew who my father was?”

“I knew his name.”

“And you still married me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because none of that changed who you were.”

Claire looked away.

Her uncle interrupted.

“Your biological father left something behind.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

“A trust.”

She frowned.

“Money?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“The controlling documents for the network.”

Claire understood.

“The inheritance isn't money.”

“No.”

Her uncle looked at the notebook.

“It's authority.”

Daniel's face changed.

Claire saw it.

“What?”

Daniel stared at her.

“Your biological father created a legal structure that gives the final beneficiary control over every company connected to the network.”

Claire's voice was barely audible.

“And I'm the beneficiary?”

“Yes.”

“That means the people chasing me don't want me dead.”

Her uncle nodded.

“They want you to sign.”

Claire looked at the open notebook.

“And if I don't?”

“They lose everything.”

A long silence followed.

Then Claire heard something outside.

A car door.

Her uncle turned toward the windows.

“They found us.”

Daniel immediately moved toward Claire.

“How many?”

Her uncle looked through the curtain.

“Three cars.”

Claire held the notebook tightly.

Her uncle turned to her.

“You have to leave now.”

“Where?”

“Your mother's house.”

Claire stared.

“She has a house?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

He gave her an address.

Daniel looked at him.

“Is it safe?”

“No place is safe anymore.”

The lights in the house went out.

Claire gasped.

Someone had cut the power.

Then the front door handle began to turn.

Her uncle stepped toward it.

Daniel pulled Claire behind him.

A voice came from outside.

“Claire, open the door.”

It was the man from the railway station.

Claire whispered, “He followed us.”

Her uncle looked at Daniel.

“Take her.”

“What about you?”

“I'll buy you time.”

The door shook under a heavy impact.

Claire grabbed her uncle's arm.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“For years, your family protected you by keeping you ignorant.”

Another impact shook the frame.

His voice softened.

“Don't make the same mistake.”

He pushed open a hidden panel beneath the staircase.

A narrow passage appeared.

Daniel pulled Claire inside.

She looked back.

Her uncle remained in the foyer.

The door splintered.

Claire heard shouting.

Then a gunshot.

Daniel slammed the hidden door.

They ran into darkness.
