PART 10 – Susan Finally Named the Person Behind the Old Accounts, and Daniel Realized His Family Had Been Following Someone Else’s Rules Since Before Claire Was Born

The name on the paper belonged to Arthur Vale.

Daniel had not spoken it in years.

Claire watched his face.

“Who is Arthur Vale?”

Daniel did not answer.

Susan did.

“Your father's former attorney.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“My grandfather's attorney?”

“Yes.”

“What does he have to do with this?”

Susan folded her hands.

“Everything.”

Daniel walked toward the window.

“Arthur was the person who handled the estate after my father died.”

“And?”

“He told me there was nothing left.”

Susan shook her head.

“There was.”

Claire looked at the old photographs.

“Why would he lie?”

“Because the estate wasn't only money.”

Susan opened another folder.

Inside were property deeds, company registrations, and handwritten notes.

Arthur Vale had represented several families in the region. He had created trusts, transferred property, and handled corporate structures.

“He built the system,” Susan said.

Claire read one document.

“Why wasn't he arrested?”

“Because he died.”

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

Claire frowned.

“Then how can he be behind what happened now?”

“He isn't.”

Susan looked at Daniel.

“Someone inherited his network.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Who?”

Susan shook her head.

“We don't know.”

Claire looked down at the paper.

“Then why did Mom write his name?”

“Because she wanted you to start there.”

The investigator had told Claire not to pursue private leads without notifying him. She called him immediately.

Within an hour, federal investigators were examining the documents Susan had kept.

They discovered that Arthur Vale had represented Thomas's family, Martin's family, and Evelyn's father.

He had also represented Claire's uncle.

The connections stretched back decades.

Daniel sat quietly while the investigators photographed the records.

Then one investigator asked a question.

“Mr. Mercer, did your father ever mention a second will?”

Daniel frowned.

“No.”

Susan looked at him.

“He did.”

Daniel turned.

“When?”

“Before he died.”

“You never told me.”

“He asked me not to.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed Arthur had destroyed it.”

Claire looked at the investigator.

“Can a will disappear?”

“Yes,” he said. “But copies may exist.”

Susan nodded.

“That is why I kept this.”

She produced a small key.

Claire recognized it.

It was identical to the key attached to Daniel's old house keys.

Daniel stared.

“Where did you get that?”

“Your mother gave it to me.”

Claire looked at the key.

“What does it open?”

Susan looked toward Daniel.

“Your father's old safe.”

Daniel frowned.

“I don't have a safe.”

“You did.”

“When?”

“Before you married Evelyn.”

Daniel slowly shook his head.

“I would remember.”

“You were twenty-four.”

Susan smiled sadly.

“You remember the life you lived. Not every life they built around you.”

They returned to Daniel's house.

The investigators searched the attic again.

Behind an old section of paneling, they found a narrow metal door.

Daniel stared.

“I've never seen that.”

Susan inserted the key.

The door opened.

Inside was a small safe.

There were no piles of money.

No dramatic collection of jewels.

Only papers.

One envelope carried Daniel's father's name.

Another carried Evelyn's.

The third was addressed to Claire.

Claire did not open it immediately.

She looked at Daniel.

“Do you want to?”

He nodded.

She opened the envelope.

The letter was from Evelyn.

My daughter, the first line read.

Claire's throat tightened.

I cannot tell you why I built a life around a company your father believes he created. I cannot tell him everything because the danger would become his burden too.

Claire looked at Daniel.

He read over her shoulder.

The letter explained that Evelyn had discovered the original company while investigating her father's estate. She learned that Arthur Vale had been moving assets through corporations controlled by trusted family members.

Thomas had been brought into the structure as a financial manager.

Michael discovered the deception.

Daniel became involved without understanding it.

Evelyn chose him because she believed he could build an honest life around something that had been built dishonestly.

Claire wiped her eyes.

“She chose Dad.”

Susan nodded.

“She chose the man, not the company.”

The letter continued.

If they ever try to destroy Daniel by making him appear dishonest, they will need to create records showing he benefited from the money. That is why I placed the original trust beyond his control.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

The next paragraph explained the pink letters.

Evelyn had arranged for a future investigator to use ordinary financial notices as a trigger.

Not because she wanted Daniel to panic.

Because she wanted him to question the numbers.

The investigator looked at Claire.

“Your mother anticipated identity fraud.”

Claire shook her head.

“She anticipated the exact method.”

“Which means someone may have had access to her plans.”

Claire turned the page.

The final section was different.

The handwriting became hurried.

If Arthur dies, watch the people who inherit his records.

Claire stopped.

“Dad.”

Daniel read the line.

The next sentence was underlined.

One of them is inside the family.

Susan looked away.

Claire's voice became quiet.

“Who?”

Susan shook her head.

“I never knew.”

Daniel stared at the page.

“Thomas?”

“Not necessarily.”

“Martin?”

“No.”

“Uncle?”

Susan hesitated.

“Maybe.”

Claire looked at her.

“You're hiding something.”

Susan took a breath.

“There was another person.”

“Who?”

“Your grandfather's secretary.”

Claire frowned.

“What about her?”

“She was the only person who had access to Arthur's private ledger.”

“Where is she now?”

Susan looked at Daniel.

“She became Arthur's wife.”

Silence filled the room.

Claire looked at the investigator.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

He checked his records.

“She lives in the same city.”

Claire stood.

“We need to speak to her.”

The investigator nodded.

“We'll arrange it.”

But before they could leave, Daniel noticed another document inside the safe.

It was a transfer agreement.

The date was two months after Evelyn's death.

The recipient was Arthur Vale.

The signature belonged to Daniel.

Claire stared at it.

“That isn't your signature.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

The investigator photographed it.

Then he looked at the date.

“Arthur was already dead.”

Claire felt the old fear return.

Someone had been using Daniel's identity after Arthur died.

And the signature had been created after Evelyn's death.

The investigator looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Mercer, this changes the timeline.”

Daniel looked at him.

“How?”

“The person continuing this operation wasn't following Arthur's instructions.”

“Then whose?”

The investigator pointed to the document.

“Whoever signed this knew Arthur was dead.”

Claire looked at Susan.

Susan whispered, “Then someone took control after him.”

A phone rang.

It belonged to the investigator.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

He listened.

Then looked at Claire.

“We found the secretary.”

“Where?”

“She left her home twenty minutes ago.”

“Why?”

“She received a phone call.”

“From whom?”

The investigator looked at the number.

“Your father's old business line.”

Daniel went pale.

“That number hasn't existed for ten years.”

The investigator ended the call.

“Someone just activated it.”
