PART 7 – At the Grave, Michael Revealed What Their Fathers Had Tried to Bury, and Daniel Finally Understood Why Lily’s Nightmare Had Been Recreated

The cemetery was almost empty.

Snow covered the graves in smooth white layers, broken only by the tracks of police officers approaching the old stone path.

Michael stood beside Daniel's father's grave.

He did not run.

He did not resist.

He simply waited.

Daniel approached with Officer Harris.

Emma stayed behind with Lily.

"Michael."

He turned.

"You found the notebook."

Daniel held it up.

"Yes."

Michael looked at it.

"Then you know."

"I know my father investigated Anna's disappearance."

Michael smiled faintly.

"That's not all."

"What happened?"

Michael looked down at the grave.

"Your father and mine were friends."

"I know."

"They wanted to expose the people behind the disappearances."

"Who were they?"

Michael shook his head.

"Not people."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"A network."

He explained that several adults had been involved in an underground operation that used staged incidents to manipulate children into revealing memories of events they had witnessed.

The children were not necessarily abducted for ransom.

They were used as witnesses.

Some had seen illegal exchanges.

Some had seen people being blackmailed.

Some had seen crimes.

The network discovered that frightened children could remember details adults had forgotten.

They developed methods to isolate those memories.

The blanket.

The tree.

The bowl.

The strange nighttime encounters.

The terror was deliberate.

Daniel listened.

"Why?"

"Because children talk when they're afraid."

Emma approached.

"And Lily?"

Michael looked at her.

"Lily saw something."

"What?"

He hesitated.

"Your father."

Daniel stiffened.

"My father died years ago."

"Not the event."

Michael looked at the notebook.

"Something he recorded."

Daniel frowned.

Michael explained that Daniel's father had discovered evidence of a financial exchange involving several influential local figures.

He had hidden the evidence.

But before he could expose them, Thomas became frightened.

Thomas betrayed the investigation.

Not completely.

Just enough.

That betrayal allowed the network to survive.

Michael's father spent the rest of his life regretting it.

"Then why did you target Lily?"

Michael looked toward her.

"I didn't."

Daniel's anger returned.

"You put her in the tree."

"I didn't."

"You were at the property."

"Yes."

"You watched her."

"Yes."

"You left the note."

"Yes."

"Then what did you do?"

"I tried to keep her alive."

Silence.

Michael explained that he had been following the person who actually took Lily.

He had arrived too late to stop the first part.

He found Lily beneath the tree.

He cut the rope holding the blanket.

Then he heard someone approaching.

He hid.

He watched Daniel and Emma find her.

He left the evidence because he needed them to follow the trail.

Daniel stared.

"Why didn't you come forward?"

"Because the man who took her was still watching."

"Who?"

Michael looked toward the road.

"Samuel Cross's son."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Samuel's son?"

"He took over the network."

"What's his name?"

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know."

Harris stepped forward.

"You expect us to believe you don't know?"

"I know his face."

"Then describe him."

Michael looked at Daniel.

"He looks like your father."

Daniel felt a chill.

"That's impossible."

"He isn't."

Michael pulled a photograph from his coat.

Daniel stared.

The man in the photograph was middle-aged.

Dark hair.

Similar eyes.

The resemblance to Daniel's father was unmistakable.

"Who is he?"

"Richard Cross."

Daniel recognized the surname.

Samuel Cross had a son.

Richard had worked overseas for years.

He had returned recently.

"Where is he now?"

Michael answered.

"At your house."

Emma's face went pale.

"What?"

Michael continued.

"He knew you would follow the trail."

Daniel reached for his phone.

No signal.

The storm had cut communications.

Harris tried her radio.

Static.

Then a faint voice came through.

"Unit three, respond."

Harris answered.

"We need immediate assistance at the Hale residence."

Nothing.

Daniel looked at Emma.

"Take Lily and stay here."

"No."

"Emma."

"I'm not leaving you."

Michael interrupted.

"He wants all of you."

"Why?"

"Because the notebook isn't the evidence."

Daniel looked down.

"What is?"

"The tape."

Daniel remembered the cassette.

"The second interview?"

"No."

Michael pointed toward the cemetery.

"Your father made another recording."

"Where?"

"Under his grave."

Daniel stared.

Michael knelt and brushed snow from the stone base.

A small metal compartment had been built beneath it.

Inside was another cassette.

Daniel's hands shook as he took it.

Harris found a portable player in her vehicle.

They listened.

Daniel's father's voice filled the cold air.

"If you're hearing this, I failed to stop them."

Daniel closed his eyes.

His father's voice continued.

"They will try to make you believe the children were victims because they were weak."

A pause.

"They were witnesses."

Daniel looked at Lily.

His father continued.

"The child who remembers the tree is not the child they want."

Daniel's heart began pounding.

"They want the person who remembers who stood behind the tree."

The tape ended.

Emma looked at Lily.

Lily whispered, "I remember."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

"The man."

Daniel crouched beside her.

"Who?"

Lily pointed at the photograph Michael had given them.

"Not him."

She pointed behind the photograph.

At the reflection in a car window.

Daniel took the photograph.

He enlarged it on his phone.

A second person stood in the reflection.

A woman.

Emma stared.

"I know her."

Daniel looked at her.

"Who?"

"The woman from the school."

Harris frowned.

"What school?"

"The person who came to speak to us about Lily's records."

Daniel remembered.

A district employee had visited them several weeks earlier.

She had asked detailed questions about Lily's schedule.

At the time, Emma had thought it was routine.

It wasn't.

"What was her name?"

Emma struggled.

"Mrs. Carter."

Michael shook his head.

"That's not her real name."

Harris looked at Daniel.

"We need to get back to the house."

They moved quickly.

The storm had intensified.

By the time they reached the road, the wind was strong enough to obscure the houses.

Then Daniel saw a light.

His house.

One window was illuminated.

The back door stood open.

Emma grabbed his arm.

"Lily."

They ran.

Inside, the house was silent.

Too silent.

The kitchen chair had been overturned.

A mug lay broken on the floor.

Lily's backpack was gone.

Emma shouted.

"Lily!"

No answer.

Daniel ran upstairs.

The bedroom was empty.

Her window was open.

Snow had blown across the floor.

On the bed lay the floral blanket.

And beside it was a note.

Daniel picked it up.

It contained only one sentence.

You were looking for the wrong tree.

Michael read it over his shoulder.

His face changed.

"He's taking her to the original tree."

Daniel stared.

"Anna's tree?"

Michael nodded.

"But that tree was destroyed."

"Not the tree."

Michael looked at the note.

"The place."

Harris understood.

"The old quarry."

Daniel looked at her.

"What quarry?"

Michael answered.

"Where Anna was first taken."
