The lake house looked smaller than Mara remembered.
The roof sagged over the porch. Weeds had pushed through cracks in the concrete steps. One window was boarded shut, and the faded curtains inside moved whenever the wind slipped through gaps in the walls.
Mara stood beside the car and stared at the front door.
She had not been here in eleven years.
Daniel switched off the engine.
Nobody moved.
Lena looked at her mother.
"Is this where it happened?"
Mara nodded.
"Your uncle died here."
"How?"
"I was told it was an accident."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"You were told that because I let you believe it."
Mara turned toward him.
"What really happened?"
"Inside."
She almost refused.
Then Lena reached for her hand.
"We came this far."
Mara squeezed her fingers.
They entered together.
Dust covered the furniture. A broken lamp lay beside the fireplace. The air smelled of wood, mold, and old rain.
Lena limped toward the hallway.
"Where would someone hide a file?"
Daniel looked at her.
"I don't know."
"You knew this place."
"Years ago."
"Then think."
Mara watched him.
For the first time, she saw how much of the house he remembered.
He knew which floorboard creaked.
He knew the kitchen cabinet that stuck.
He knew the basement door had to be lifted before it would open.
"You've been here since that night," Mara said.
Daniel shook his head.
"Once."
"When?"
"Last year."
Mara stared.
"You came here last year?"
"I was looking for something."
"What?"
"The file."
"What file?"
"The one Lena found."
Lena looked between them.
"What was in it?"
Daniel took a breath.
"Evidence."
"Of what?"
"Of what happened that night."
Mara walked away from him.
"You let me grieve for eleven years while you came back here looking for evidence?"
"I was trying to protect you."
"You keep saying that."
"Because it's true."
"Then tell me the truth."
Daniel remained silent.
Lena moved toward the old fireplace.
"Mom."
Mara turned.
Lena was pointing at a loose brick.
"It moves."
Daniel crossed the room.
"Don't."
Lena stepped back.
He knelt and removed the brick.
Behind it was a narrow cavity.
Empty.
Mara's heart sank.
"Someone already took it."
Daniel nodded.
"What?"
"The file."
Lena looked at the cavity.
"There was something here."
"How do you know?"
"Because the dust is different."
Mara crouched beside her.
Lena pointed to a clean rectangular outline.
"Something was sitting here."
Daniel stared at it.
Then he noticed another mark.
A small black thread caught in the mortar.
The same material as the strip found in Lena's hair.
He pulled it free.
Mara looked at him.
"That fabric again."
Daniel nodded.
"Someone was here recently."
Lena looked toward the hallway.
"Then they're still nearby."
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
All three froze.
Daniel raised one finger.
Silence.
Another creak.
Mara whispered, "Could be the house."
"No," Daniel said.
He knew the difference.
They moved toward the stairs.
Lena stayed behind.
"Wait."
Mara turned.
Lena pointed toward the kitchen.
"There's something under the table."
Mara walked over.
A small metal key lay beneath the table.
Attached to it was a plastic tag.
Room 3.
Daniel picked it up.
"There is no Room 3."
Mara frowned.
"What?"
"This house only has two bedrooms."
Lena looked toward the hallway.
"Then where is it?"
They searched the upstairs rooms.
The first bedroom was empty.
The second held an old bed frame and a cracked mirror.
No third room.
Daniel checked the attic.
Nothing.
Finally, Lena noticed the bathroom wall.
"That's strange."
"What?"
"The wall is too thick."
Daniel measured the hallway with his eyes.
He walked into the bathroom and tapped the tiles.
One sounded hollow.
He removed the towel rack.
Behind it was a narrow wooden panel.
Mara stepped closer.
"Open it."
Daniel hesitated.
She looked at him.
"You wanted the truth."
He pulled the panel free.
A dark passage appeared behind it.
Cold air came through.
Lena's face tightened.
"Someone built this."
Daniel nodded.
They entered.
The passage led behind the walls toward a small hidden room.
Inside stood a desk.
On the desk were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Mara's breath caught.
There were photographs of her.
Daniel.
Lena.
Their house.
Their car.
The school.
The old gym.
And photographs of Mara's brother taken before his death.
Lena whispered, "He's been watching us for years."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not him."
"Then who?"
Daniel pointed at one photograph.
A man stood beside Mara's brother.
Mara recognized him.
Her stomach dropped.
"That's Robert."
Daniel nodded.
"Your brother's business partner."
"He died years ago."
"No."
Daniel looked at her.
"Robert disappeared."
Mara stared at the photograph.
She remembered the police telling her that Robert had left town after the accident.
She had believed them.
"You knew he was alive?"
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Eleven years."
Mara slapped Daniel across the face.
The sound echoed inside the hidden room.
Daniel didn't defend himself.
"You knew?"
"I knew he survived."
"You knew he was alive while I thought everyone involved was gone?"
"I tried to find him."
"You found him."
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because he threatened you."
Mara's anger faltered.
"What did he want?"
"The file."
"Why?"
"Because it proves he caused your brother's death."
Lena stepped closer.
"And my injury?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Robert wasn't supposed to know about you."
Lena's face went pale.
"What does that mean?"
"He believed the evidence was destroyed."
Mara looked around the room.
"But it wasn't."
Daniel pointed to the desk.
"Your brother made copies."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
A sound came from behind them.
The hidden door slammed shut.
Lena screamed.
Daniel rushed toward it.
Locked.
Someone had locked them inside.
Mara grabbed the handle.
"Daniel!"
"I know."
He pulled hard.
Nothing.
Then a voice came through the wall.
"Eleven years ago, you helped bury the truth."
Mara recognized it.
Robert.
"You should have left it buried."
Daniel shouted, "Leave my family alone!"
A quiet laugh answered.
"You brought them here."
Mara looked at Daniel.
"How do we get out?"
He stared at the room.
Then his eyes landed on the old desk.
One drawer was slightly open.
He pulled it.
Inside was a cassette recorder.
A handwritten note rested on top.
Mara picked it up.
The handwriting was unmistakably her brother's.
If you are reading this, Daniel finally brought Mara here.
She looked at her husband.
Daniel closed his eyes.
The recording began.
Her brother's voice filled the room.
"Mara, if you hear this, I need you to know that Daniel didn't kill me."
Mara covered her mouth.
The voice continued.
"He tried to stop Robert."
Daniel began to cry silently.
Then the recording reached the sentence that changed everything.
"The person who betrayed me wasn't Daniel."
A pause.
Then:
"It was the person Mara trusted most."
The recording clicked off.
Nobody moved.
Lena looked at her mother.
"Who did he mean?"
Mara stared at Daniel.
Daniel stared at the locked door.
Then something slid beneath it.
A photograph.
Mara picked it up.
It showed her brother standing beside someone whose face had been cut away from the photograph.
On the back were six words:
You already know who she is.
Mara looked at Lena.
Then at Daniel.
And finally at the photograph again.
Her hands began to shake.
Because she recognized the handwriting.
It was her own.
