NOTE: Charles admits that Michael's disappearance was connected to the ledger but insists he was trying to protect the family. Daniel must decide whom to believe as evidence reveals a deeper betrayal.
Daniel opened the door only after moving Noah behind him.
Charles stood on the porch alone.
He was wearing the same dark coat he had worn when he attended Daniel's father's funeral.
Seeing him there made the entire situation feel unreal.
“Come in,” Daniel said.
Charles stepped inside.
His eyes moved to Evan.
“I knew you'd be here.”
Evan said nothing.
Charles looked at me.
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“For what you're about to learn.”
Daniel closed the door.
“Start talking.”
Charles removed his gloves.
“Your brother is alive.”
Daniel's face changed.
“You said he was dead.”
“I never said that.”
“You attended his funeral.”
“So did you.”
“You told me to accept what happened.”
“Because I believed you were safer not knowing.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Charles looked at Evan.
“He told you about the ledger.”
“Yes.”
“Then he told you enough to make you dangerous.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is Michael?”
Charles hesitated.
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Then get out.”
Charles shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
“No. I understand perfectly. You knew my brother was alive and let me mourn him for eleven years.”
Charles lowered his eyes.
“I thought it was the only way.”
Daniel turned away.
For years, he had visited Michael's grave.
He had spoken to a stone.
He had told stories to Noah about an uncle he barely remembered.
And all that time, Michael had been alive somewhere.
The betrayal was almost impossible to absorb.
Charles explained that Michael had discovered the ledger.
He had also discovered that someone was preparing to eliminate everyone who knew about it.
The first person targeted was Daniel's father.
The second was Michael.
The third would have been Daniel.
“Why me?”
“Because you're the last person connected to the original accounts.”
Daniel stared at him.
“I don't know anything about them.”
“Exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
Charles took a breath.
“Your father placed the final access code somewhere only you could reach.”
Daniel felt cold.
“What access code?”
Charles looked at the staircase.
“The house.”
Daniel understood.
The loose board.
The box.
The photograph.
The flash drive.
They weren't the evidence.
They were instructions.
The real ledger was somewhere else.
“Where?”
Charles said:
“Your father's office.”
Daniel's father had owned a small office downtown.
It had been sold after his death.
But Charles knew something Daniel didn't.
The basement had never been renovated.
There was an old safe beneath the floor.
Daniel and Charles drove there with Evan.
I stayed with Noah at a friend's house.
For the first time since the stranger had appeared, I felt a small measure of relief.
But it didn't last.
At the office, the old safe was still there.
Charles showed Daniel how to open it.
Inside was a thick ledger.
Actual paper.
Names.
Payments.
Dates.
And beside several names was a single symbol.
A black circle.
“What does that mean?” Daniel asked.
Charles answered:
“People who were removed.”
“Removed how?”
“Some disappeared.”
“Michael?”
“No.”
Daniel turned pages.
There were dozens.
Some names were familiar.
Some were not.
Then he found his father's name.
A black circle beside it.
Below it was another name.
Michael Carter.
No circle.
Daniel looked at Charles.
“What does that mean?”
Charles said nothing.
Evan stepped forward.
“It means Michael was supposed to disappear, not die.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Evan explained.
The original plan had been to make Michael vanish.
Give him a new identity.
Keep him away from the network.
Charles had arranged it.
But someone had betrayed the plan.
Someone had attempted to kill Michael.
Michael survived.
The family was told he died.
Daniel stared at the ledger.
“Who betrayed you?”
Charles looked at Evan.
Evan looked back.
Neither answered.
Then Daniel found a page marked with a date.
The date of the accident.
Beneath it was a note.
TRANSFER CANCELLED.
SUBJECT RETAINED.
Daniel's heart raced.
“Who wrote this?”
Charles said:
“Your father.”
“My father knew?”
“Yes.”
“He knew Michael survived?”
“Yes.”
Daniel sat down.
Everything he believed about his father's final years had been wrong.
His father had not died peacefully believing Michael was dead.
He had spent his final years trying to protect him.
“Why didn't he tell me?”
Charles looked at him.
“Because you were being watched.”
Daniel looked up.
“By whom?”
Charles hesitated.
“Your wife.”
I felt sick when Daniel told me later.
At first, I thought he had misunderstood.
But Charles had records.
Phone calls.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
For months before Michael disappeared, someone had been monitoring our family.
The person had access to information only someone close to us could know.
My own involvement was obvious to them.
But there was another name.
Daniel's former business partner, Greg.
Greg had known our schedules.
He had known where we lived.
He had known Daniel's father's accounts.
And he had known Michael.
Daniel called him.
Greg answered.
“It's late.”
“Where are you?”
Silence.
“Greg.”
“I wondered when you'd call.”
Daniel's voice became cold.
“Did you know Michael was alive?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know my father was involved?”
“Yes.”
“Did you send someone to my house tonight?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Greg laughed softly.
“You still think the person at the door was the threat.”
Daniel stopped.
“What do you mean?”
“The man at your door was trying to warn you.”
Daniel looked at Evan.
Greg continued.
“The threat is already inside the family.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at his phone.
Charles looked at him.
“You see now why I couldn't tell you?”
“No.”
Charles seemed surprised.
“I see why you were afraid.”
Daniel stood.
“But fear isn't the same as doing the right thing.”
Charles nodded.
“I know.”
They returned to the house.
Noah was asleep.
I was sitting in the kitchen.
Daniel placed the ledger on the table.
“This is everything.”
I looked at it.
“What are you going to do?”
“Give it to the police.”
Charles immediately objected.
“You can't.”
“Why?”
“Because people will die.”
Daniel stared at him.
“People are already dying.”
Charles lowered his head.
“We need to separate the names of innocent people from those who participated.”
Daniel understood.
The ledger contained victims too.
People who had been coerced.
People who had received money under threats.
People who had never understood why they were being targeted.
Publishing everything would destroy lives.
Keeping everything hidden would allow the network to survive.
There was no easy answer.
Then Noah walked into the kitchen.
He looked sleepy.
“Dad?”
Daniel immediately closed the ledger.
“What is it?”
Noah held up his tablet.
“There was a message.”
Daniel took it.
A photograph appeared on the screen.
It showed Michael.
Alive.
Older.
Standing beside a woman Daniel didn't recognize.
Under the photograph were five words.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT HIM.
Daniel looked at Charles.
Charles's face had gone pale.
“No,” he whispered.
“What?”
“That photograph was taken today.”
Daniel stared at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because I know where Michael is.”
The room went silent.
“Where?”
Charles swallowed.
“They found him.”
