PART 3 – Behind Lena’s Closet Wall, Derek Found the Second Phone and a Recording That Changed His Understanding of Who Had Betrayed Noah

NOTE: This part uncovers the second phone, reveals the extent of Elliot Gray’s surveillance, and forces Derek to confront the possibility that someone close to Lena deliberately helped Elliot.

Derek returned to Lena's house before sunrise.

The police had secured the property, but Detective Morgan allowed him inside because Noah's testimony had identified a specific location. The closet looked ordinary. Clothes hung from a wooden rod. Shoes lined the floor. A small mirror stood against the wall.

Derek ran his hands along the paneling.

Nothing.

He remembered Noah's words.

The room Mommy said never to open.

He moved the shoes.

Behind them was a narrow seam.

He pressed it.

A section of the wall shifted.

Behind it was a small compartment.

Inside sat a second phone.

Derek stared at it.

This phone was newer than the first.

Its screen displayed one message.

YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.

Detective Morgan immediately took control of the evidence.

The phone contained recordings.

The first showed Elliot entering the house.

The second showed Travis receiving instructions.

The third showed Lena confronting Travis.

Derek watched the footage with growing anger.

Travis stood in the kitchen holding the bat.

Lena was standing between him and Noah.

“You're not taking anything,” she said.

Travis shouted that he had no choice.

“Everybody has a choice.”

“No, Lena. You don't understand who you're dealing with.”

“I understand enough.”

Then Elliot's voice came from the phone.

“You've made this much harder than it needed to be.”

Derek stared.

Elliot had been present.

Not physically.

Through a speaker.

He had been directing Travis.

Then the screen changed.

Noah appeared.

The boy was sitting on the floor.

Elliot's voice asked him what he had seen.

Noah didn't answer.

The recording ended.

Derek closed his eyes.

He understood why Noah had been afraid.

He had witnessed something.

But what?

The next recording provided the answer.

Elliot had been meeting with someone inside the house.

The person was hidden from the camera.

Only their hands were visible.

They placed a folder on the table.

Derek recognized the bracelet on the person's wrist.

It belonged to Lena.

The person wasn't Elliot.

It was someone Derek knew.

Travis.

But Travis wasn't alone.

The other person's face finally appeared.

Derek stopped breathing.

It was Lena's husband.

Noah's father.

The recording showed him handing Elliot a file.

Derek stared at the screen.

He felt betrayed.

He called him.

No answer.

Detective Morgan looked at Derek.

“Don't confront him alone.”

Derek nodded.

But when Noah's father arrived later that morning, Derek couldn't hide his anger.

“You gave Elliot the archive.”

He froze.

“Who told you?”

“The recording.”

He sat down.

“I didn't know what he would do.”

“You knew enough.”

“I was trying to protect Lena.”

“By helping Elliot?”

“I thought I could control it.”

Derek shook his head.

“You nearly got your son hurt.”

His face collapsed.

“I know.”

The truth came out slowly.

Months earlier, Elliot had discovered financial irregularities connected to the family business.

He threatened to expose them unless Noah's father gave him access to the archive.

He complied.

At first, he believed Elliot only wanted financial information.

Then he realized Elliot was interested in something else.

A missing account.

An account that had been created years earlier.

Lena discovered it too.

She confronted her husband.

He admitted what he had done.

She demanded that he go to the police.

He refused.

That was when she began collecting evidence secretly.

She knew she could not trust him.

But she still loved him.

That conflict explained why she had disappeared without warning.

She wasn't running from Noah.

She was trying to keep Noah alive.

Derek asked:

“Where is she?”

Noah's father shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I swear.”

Detective Morgan interrupted.

“We have another problem.”

She showed them the phone.

A location had appeared.

An abandoned warehouse.

The same warehouse where Noah's father had gone.

Derek recognized the address.

It belonged to an old property owned by Elliot.

They drove there.

The warehouse was empty.

But a chair stood in the center.

On it was Lena's phone.

Beside it was another note.

YOU WERE ALWAYS LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.

Derek turned.

“What does that mean?”

Detective Morgan looked around.

“Maybe we're supposed to find something.”

They searched.

Behind a stack of pallets was a hidden door.

Inside was a small room.

There were monitors.

Photographs.

Maps.

Schedules.

And dozens of images of Noah.

Derek felt sick.

Some photographs had been taken at school.

Others outside the house.

One showed Noah playing in the yard.

Another showed Derek arriving.

A third showed Lena carrying groceries.

The surveillance had lasted months.

Then Derek saw something that made him angry enough to shake.

A photograph of Noah's injured arm.

It had been taken before Derek arrived.

Someone had been watching the assault.

Elliot had known.

He had allowed it.

Detective Morgan found a hard drive.

It contained financial transfers.

Elliot had paid Travis.

He had paid other people too.

But the largest payment went to an account under an unfamiliar name.

Mara.

The woman from the photograph.

Derek understood.

She wasn't merely a witness.

She had been part of the operation.

But when police located her again, she had disappeared.

The evidence suggested she had fled.

Then Lena's voice came through the warehouse speakers.

Derek spun around.

“If you're hearing this, you're close.”

He looked toward the ceiling.

“I know what Elliot wants.”

The recording continued.

“He wants the document that proves he never owned the company assets he claimed to control.”

Derek remembered the archive.

There was one document they hadn't found.

A signed agreement.

The original ownership certificate.

Lena had hidden it.

But where?

The recording gave a clue.

“I put it somewhere Noah would recognize.”

Derek looked at Detective Morgan.

“His room.”

They returned to the house.

Noah was waiting with a social worker.

Derek knelt beside him.

“Your mom said she hid something where you would recognize it.”

Noah thought.

Then he pointed toward his bookshelf.

“My dinosaur.”

Derek pulled down a small green toy.

It was hollow.

Inside was a folded document.

The original ownership certificate.

Elliot's entire financial claim depended on a forged copy.

The original proved the truth.

Detective Morgan smiled for the first time.

“We have him.”

But Derek noticed something else.

A handwritten sentence on the back of the certificate.

HE WILL COME FOR THIS BEFORE HE RUNS.

Derek looked at the clock.

It was eleven thirty.

Midnight was thirty minutes away.
