PART 4 — NOTE: The husband faces pressure from his family while the narrator begins documenting what happened. This part introduces accountability and hidden family patterns.
My husband came to my apartment three days later.
I almost didn’t open the door.
When I finally did, I kept the chain locked.
“You look tired,” he said.
I almost laughed.
“You came here to tell me that?”
He looked uncomfortable.
“I haven’t slept.”
“That’s unfortunate.”
He looked hurt by my response.
But I was tired of carrying his emotions while mine were ignored.
“My mother says you planned everything,” he said.
I stared at him.
“She still believes that?”
“She says the necklace was found in her purse because you put it there earlier.”
I closed my eyes.
Even after everything.
Even after the truth.
She was still searching for a way to blame me.
“And you?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
“You still don’t know.”
“I’m trying.”
“No. You’re trying to find a version where nobody has to admit what happened.”
He looked down.
I told him he needed to leave.
Before he walked away, he said something unexpected.
“My aunt told me something.”
I waited.
“She said my mother has done this before.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She accused another family member years ago. Everyone believed her. Later they found out she was wrong.”
That explained why his aunt had reacted so strongly.
She wasn’t protecting me because I was special.
She was protecting the truth because she was tired of watching lies destroy people.
