PART 5 – The Message Mariana Sent After Surviving the Road Explained Why Alejandro Kept Watching Her, and Why He Was Desperate to Find Her

The first thing Alejandro did when detectives showed him the photographs from Guadalajara was stare at the floor.

He had been sitting in an interview room for nearly an hour, repeating the same account in slightly different words. Mariana had fallen. He had panicked. He had believed she was dead. He had driven away because fear had overwhelmed him. Every version ended with the same convenient conclusion: he had not known she survived.

Then the detective placed the photograph of Mariana beside the photograph of Alejandro watching her from across the street.

Alejandro stopped speaking.

The detective slid the first photograph closer.

“You recognize her?”

Alejandro swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And you recognize yourself?”

“Yes.”

“Why were you there?”

He leaned back and closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he looked like a man trying to remember something painful. Lucía would later understand that he was not remembering. He was deciding how much of the truth could still be concealed.

“She contacted me.”

The detective waited.

“When?”

“Several weeks after the accident.”

“What did she say?”

Alejandro's fingers tightened against the edge of the table.

“She told me she was alive.”

The room went quiet.

It was the first time he had admitted knowing Mariana had survived.

The detective did not react immediately. He simply wrote the admission into his notes.

“You knew she was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You knew where she was.”

“Eventually.”

“And you told nobody.”

Alejandro looked toward the wall.

“I was afraid.”

The detective pushed a printed message across the table.

It contained only a few words.

I survived. Stay away from me.

Lucía read it later and understood why Mariana had chosen those words.

She had not asked Alejandro for help.

She had not threatened him.

She had simply told him that she was alive and wanted him nowhere near her.

That should have ended everything.

Instead, it began another period of hiding.

Alejandro had not called the police.

He had not told Lucía.

He had not contacted either family.

He had kept quiet because admitting Mariana was alive would have forced him to answer a much harder question: why had he left an injured woman beside a road without calling for help?

His original accident story might have been believable for a moment.

His behavior afterward was not.

Once detectives understood that, the investigation changed.

They began examining every trip Alejandro had taken after Mariana disappeared.

Fuel receipts.

Toll records.

Hotel registrations.

Bank withdrawals.

Phone locations.

Messages.

He had spent months moving between cities while maintaining the appearance of ordinary business travel.

The pattern eventually became obvious.

He was not simply traveling for work.

He was searching.

Mariana had disappeared into Guadalajara, and Alejandro had followed the trail without wanting anyone to know he was looking for her.

That was where the financial transfers became important.

Several payments had gone to an account belonging to Mariana's older brother.

At first, Lucía had assumed the money was some kind of support.

It wasn't.

The transfers were attempts to obtain information.

Alejandro had been paying for silence and then paying for answers.

When the brother refused to tell him where Mariana was, Alejandro changed tactics.

He began looking himself.

Mariana eventually told investigators what had happened after she left the clinic.

Her brother had arrived after learning about the accident.

By then, she was frightened enough to believe that returning home would be dangerous.

She had no clear understanding of how long she had been unconscious.

She only remembered fragments.

Rain against glass.

A headache so severe she could barely open her eyes.

A nurse speaking softly.

Her brother's hand around hers.

Then the realization that Alejandro had not come back.

She had expected him to appear.

He did not.

That absence told her more than any explanation could have.

She understood that whatever had happened on the road, Alejandro had chosen not to rescue her.

So she disappeared.

She changed where she stayed.

She avoided familiar places.

She eventually traveled to Guadalajara under another name.

There, she gave birth to the child Alejandro had known nothing about until much later.

When Lucía heard that part, she sat silently for a long time.

A baby had been born while Alejandro continued sleeping beside her.

Two lives had existed at once.

One inside their home.

Another hidden in another city.

And Alejandro had moved between them as though he had the right to decide which truth each woman deserved.

The detective eventually arranged for Lucía to meet Mariana again.

This time there were no questions about evidence.

No folders.

No photographs spread across a table.

Only two women sitting opposite each other in a quiet room.

Mariana looked older than she had in the pictures.

There was a faint scar near her hairline.

Her eyes were steady.

Lucía wondered whether she looked equally unfamiliar to Mariana.

After all, each woman had spent years imagining the other without knowing what the other actually looked like.

Mariana broke the silence.

“He told me you knew.”

Lucía looked at her.

“I didn't.”

Mariana nodded slowly.

“He said you knew about me.”

“I didn't even know your name.”

Mariana looked down at her hands.

Then she said something that made Lucía's chest tighten.

“He told me you were the woman he had chosen after we separated.”

Lucía shook her head.

“He told me you were dead.”

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

There was no dramatic confrontation.

No accusation.

There didn't need to be.

The truth had already done enough damage.

Mariana had believed Lucía was part of the deception.

Lucía had believed Mariana was a story Alejandro had invented only after the mattress was opened.

Both beliefs had been wrong.

Alejandro had created separate versions of reality and placed each woman inside one.

Mariana explained that she had suspected something was wrong before the accident.

Alejandro had begun hiding financial records.

He had stopped leaving documents where she could see them.

He became evasive whenever she asked about certain transfers.

She discovered addresses connected to people she had never met.

She also discovered that his constant trips were not as ordinary as he claimed.

Some were connected to business.

Others were not.

She had confronted him.

The argument in the truck happened afterward.

She remembered rain striking the windshield.

She remembered Alejandro gripping the steering wheel too tightly.

She remembered asking him to stop the vehicle.

Then she remembered opening the door.

The road was slick.

Her foot slipped.

Her head struck something hard.

For a few seconds, she saw nothing.

When consciousness returned, she could hear Alejandro calling her name.

That detail mattered.

It meant he knew she was alive.

He knew she was breathing.

He knew she could still hear him.

Then he left.

Mariana's voice became quieter when she reached that part.

“I couldn't move.”

Lucía stared at her.

“What did you do?”

“I tried to speak.”

“Did he hear you?”

“I don't know.”

Mariana wiped beneath one eye.

“I heard the truck leave.”

Lucía lowered her head.

The original fall might have been accidental.

The abandonment was not.

That distinction became central to the investigation.

Alejandro had not necessarily planned the injury.

But after the injury happened, he made a series of conscious decisions.

He chose not to call.

He chose to leave.

He chose to clean his vehicle.

He chose to hide Mariana's belongings.

He chose to continue his marriage with Lucía without revealing that Mariana was alive.

And when Mariana disappeared, he chose to find her rather than confess.

One choice after another.

That was what finally destroyed his story.

The investigation also uncovered something Lucía had not known.

The hidden camera in their bedroom had been connected to Alejandro's phone.

It had been installed without her knowledge.

When investigators showed her the technical report, she felt a strange pressure behind her eyes.

She remembered the afternoon she had cut open the mattress.

She remembered the message saying Alejandro would return in two hours.

She remembered how quickly his truck appeared.

The timing had never made sense.

Now it did.

He had watched her.

The motion alert had appeared on his phone when she entered the bedroom.

Another alert appeared when she dragged the mattress from the frame.

Another when she began cutting.

He had seen the discovery happening in real time.

He had not returned because his meeting was canceled.

He had returned because he knew.

The message had been designed to make her believe she had time.

It had done the opposite.

It had kept her inside the house long enough for him to reach her before she could fully understand what she had found.

Lucía sat in the detective's office while the evidence was explained to her.

She remembered every detail of that afternoon.

The blade.

The torn fabric.

The smell.

The photograph.

The gold earring.

The moment she heard the key.

She had thought the worst thing she discovered was that her husband had another wife.

She had been wrong.

The deeper truth was that he had been watching her discover the truth.

The detective told her the investigation would continue.

There were questions about the money.

Questions about the surveillance.

Questions about the accident.

Questions about what Alejandro had done after learning Mariana was alive.

Lucía listened carefully.

Then she asked one thing.

“Will he ever tell the truth?”

The detective did not promise anything.

“People tell the truth for different reasons.”

Lucía looked through the glass wall into the hallway.

“Usually because they have no other choice.”

The detective nodded.

For once, she believed Alejandro had finally reached that point.
