PART 10 – The Woman in the Photograph Was Not a Stranger After All, and Daniel’s New Memory Revealed Why Room 4A Had Always Been More Important Than They Knew

Mara placed the photograph on the table.

Room 4A.

The words seemed harmless.

They were not.

Daniel had already explained that the original ledger had been hidden there. He had believed Room 4B would be searched first because that was where the conspirators expected him to hide evidence.

But the photograph suggested something else.

Someone had been using 4A before Daniel disappeared.

“Are you certain?” Mara asked.

Daniel nodded.

“I remember the door.”

“What else?”

“A red chair.”

“Inside 4A?”

“Yes.”

Mara looked at the photograph again.

The woman’s hand was visible.

Silver ring.

Small scar.

Nothing else.

Sara sat across from them.

“Could the woman have worked there?”

“Maybe,” Mara said.

Daniel shook his head.

“She wasn't staff.”

“How do you know?”

“She knew my name before I told her.”

Mara looked at him.

“What did she call you?”

“Daniel.”

“Nothing else?”

“She said I had made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“Trusting the wrong person.”

Sara looked down.

Mara noticed.

“You know something.”

Sara shook her head.

“No.”

“Look at me.”

Sara did.

“Did you ever see that ring?”

Sara hesitated.

“Yes.”

Mara waited.

“Where?”

“At the hotel.”

“When?”

“The night Daniel disappeared.”

Daniel stood.

“You were there?”

Sara nodded.

“I was outside.”

“Why?”

“Because they told me to wait.”

Daniel walked away from the table.

Mara followed him with her eyes.

Sara continued.

“I saw the woman enter Room 4A.”

“Did you speak to her?”

“No.”

“Did you know who she was?”

“Not then.”

Mara studied her.

“And now?”

Sara swallowed.

“I think I do.”

She took out her phone.

There was an old photograph saved in a folder.

She showed it to Mara.

The image was from a newspaper article.

A woman stood beside several doctors at a charity event.

Mara recognized her immediately.

Not from the photograph.

From somewhere else.

The woman had once appeared in a television interview about missing-person cases.

Her name was Dr. Elena Voss.

Mara remembered hearing it years earlier.

She was a neurologist who specialized in memory disorders.

Daniel stared at the image.

“Her.”

Mara looked at him.

“You remember?”

“She had the ring.”

Sara nodded.

“She worked at the clinic.”

Mara's stomach tightened.

“Then why was she at the hotel?”

No one answered.

The question remained between them.

Later that afternoon, they contacted the investigators.

The photograph and medical records were copied.

An investigator examined them carefully.

“This changes the timeline,” he said.

“How?”

“If the medical record is authentic, someone had access to Daniel before his disappearance.”

Mara asked, “Can you trace the clinic?”

“Yes.”

“Can you find Dr. Voss?”

“We'll try.”

Mara wanted to ask whether Daniel could be protected.

Instead, she asked the question that mattered most.

“Is she dangerous?”

The investigator answered carefully.

“We don't know yet.”

Mara appreciated that.

For once, someone did not pretend certainty where there was none.

That night, Daniel woke from another dream.

Mara found him standing in the hallway.

He was staring at the front door.

“Daniel?”

He turned.

“She came to our apartment.”

“When?”

“Before I disappeared.”

Mara's heart raced.

“Dr. Voss?”

“I think so.”

“What did she want?”

“She asked about you.”

“What did she ask?”

“Whether you had noticed anything unusual.”

Mara frowned.

“Like what?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't remember.”

He looked toward the children's bedrooms.

“She said Lily was special.”

Mara froze.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel pressed his hands against his temples.

“Stop.”

“Okay.”

“Please.”

Mara stepped back.

He breathed slowly.

After a minute, he looked at her.

“I remember another room.”

“What room?”

“Not 4A.”

“Then where?”

“Your old apartment.”

Mara stared.

“What happened there?”

“She gave me something.”

“What?”

“A file.”

“What was inside?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Photographs of Lily.”

Mara felt sick.

“Why would she have photographs of Lily?”

“I don't know.”

“Did she say why?”

“She said they had been watching her since she was born.”

Mara sat down.

For years she had believed the danger began when Daniel discovered the ledger.

But what if it had begun earlier?

What if the people behind the network had noticed their family long before Daniel knew they existed?

The thought frightened her more than the hotel ever had.

She called the investigator.

“There's something else.”

He listened.

When she finished, he said, “Don't investigate this yourself.”

“We aren't.”

“Good.”

“Can you check whether Dr. Voss had any connection to Lily's birth records?”

“I'll request the records.”

Mara hung up.

Daniel sat beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

“For what?”

“For bringing danger into your life.”

“You didn't.”

“I did.”

“No.”

Mara took his hand.

“You tried to protect us.”

“I failed.”

“You came home.”

He looked at her.

“That matters.”

The following morning, the investigator called.

“There is a connection.”

Mara gripped the phone.

“What connection?”

“Dr. Voss was a consultant at the hospital where Lily was born.”

Mara went still.

“She was there?”

“According to the records.”

“Why?”

“That's what we're trying to determine.”

Mara asked, “Was she involved with Lily’s care?”

“Not directly.”

“Then why was she listed?”

“She signed a research authorization.”

Mara's stomach tightened.

“What research?”

“I don't know yet.”

Daniel listened from across the room.

Mara ended the call.

He already understood from her face.

“What?”

“She was at the hospital when Lily was born.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

A memory returned.

He spoke slowly.

“She held Lily.”

Mara stopped breathing.

“What?”

“After she was born.”

“You remember that?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Daniel stared at the wall.

“She said, ‘This child will matter someday.’”

Mara's hands went cold.

“She knew Lily.”

Daniel nodded.

“But I didn't understand why.”

Mara walked to the kitchen.

She needed water.

Instead, she found the old purple drawing framed beside the family photographs.

She looked at it.

Three people.

Their family.

She suddenly noticed something she had never seen before.

Behind the house, Lily had drawn a fourth figure.

A small woman.

Mara brought the picture closer.

“Lily?”

Her daughter came into the room.

“What?”

“Who is this?”

Lily studied the drawing.

“Oh.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You drew her.”

Lily shrugged.

“I think she was at the hospital.”

Mara stared.

“You remember her?”

“A little.”

“What did she look like?”

Lily thought.

“Brown hair.”

“Anything else?”

“She had a ring.”

Mara felt her pulse quicken.

“What kind?”

“Silver.”

Daniel stood behind her.

Lily looked at him.

“Dad?”

He nodded.

She smiled.

“You remembered too.”

Mara looked between them.

A memory shared by father and daughter.

A woman who had been present before the disappearance.

A research authorization.

A photograph.

A clinic.

And a secret involving Lily.

Mara picked up the phone.

She called the investigator.

“We need to know everything about Dr. Elena Voss.”

This time, she did not ask whether the woman was dangerous.

She asked a different question.

“Why did she know my daughter before anyone knew Daniel would disappear?”
