PART 5 – Emma’s Scream Came From an Open Bedroom Door, but What Daniel Found Beside Her Bed Proved the Threat Had Reached Far Closer Than They Knew

Daniel reached the stairs first. Sarah was directly behind him, barefoot and breathless, while the boys remained frozen near the kitchen. Emma screamed again. This time the sound came from upstairs, followed by the sharp scrape of something hitting the floor.

“Emma!”

Daniel took the steps two at a time.

Her bedroom door stood open.

The lamp beside her bed was on.

Emma was pressed against the far wall, clutching her blanket beneath her chin. Her face was wet with tears. The window was closed, but the curtain moved slightly.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

“Don't move.”

Sarah came beside him.

“What happened?”

Emma pointed toward the floor.

“There!”

A small object lay beside her bed.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

A red garden glove.

He looked toward the window.

The screen was intact.

The lock was still engaged.

Sarah whispered, “Someone was in here?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel stepped carefully into the room.

He checked beneath the bed.

Nothing.

The closet.

Empty.

Behind the curtains.

Empty.

He looked at the window again.

No broken glass.

No damaged latch.

Then he noticed the object beside the bed.

It wasn't simply a glove.

There was something tucked inside it.

A folded photograph.

Daniel picked it up with a tissue.

The photograph showed Emma sitting at the birthday table.

It had been taken from outside the house.

Sarah stared.

“When was that taken?”

Daniel turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

You ignored her once.

Don't do it twice.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Emma began crying again.

Daniel immediately put the photograph down.

“Sarah, take Emma downstairs.”

“What about you?”

“Call the police.”

“They're already on their way.”

“Good.”

Sarah sat beside Emma.

“Come with me.”

Emma refused to move.

“I don't want to go downstairs.”

“Why?”

“He might be there.”

Sarah understood.

She looked at Daniel.

“We're leaving the house.”

Daniel nodded.

They moved everyone into the front yard while officers arrived.

The house was searched room by room.

No one was found.

The back door was locked.

The garage was locked.

Every window was intact.

The investigator examined the glove.

“Any idea where this came from?”

Daniel shook his head.

“It looks like the gloves from the red bag.”

The investigator compared them.

Same material.

Same manufacturer.

The family stood outside beneath the porch light.

Emma was wrapped in a blanket.

Ethan kept looking toward the street.

Noah stood beside him.

“What happens now?” Ethan asked.

“We increase security,” the investigator said.

“Will he come back?”

The investigator did not give him a false promise.

“We're going to do everything we can to prevent that.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

She was staring at the house.

“Emma.”

She looked at him.

“I'm sorry.”

She shook her head.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have listened.”

She looked at the photograph.

“I told you.”

“Yes.”

“You thought I was imagining it.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

Emma looked away.

“I don't like when grown-ups say they know everything.”

Sarah put an arm around her.

“Neither do I.”

They spent the night at a hotel.

No one slept much.

Daniel sat beside the window.

Sarah joined him around three in the morning.

“You need to rest.”

“I can't.”

“You can't protect everyone if you collapse.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Someone got into our house.”

“We don't know how.”

“He left something beside Emma's bed.”

“I know.”

“I keep thinking about what could have happened.”

Sarah sat beside him.

“Don't.”

“I can't stop.”

“Then think about what we know.”

Daniel looked at her.

“We know Emma saw him.”

“We know.”

“We know he had access to the garage.”

“We know.”

“We know he contaminated the strawberries.”

“We don't know if he did it himself.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who else?”

Sarah shook her head.

“That is what the investigation is for.”

Daniel looked toward the sleeping children.

“What if it's someone we know?”

“That may be the part that scares me most.”

Morning came without making anything easier.

Police placed additional surveillance around the house.

The school was notified.

Emma stayed home.

The family lawyer advised Sarah and Daniel not to communicate with the unknown sender.

Daniel wanted to respond.

Sarah stopped him.

“No.”

“He needs to know we aren't afraid.”

“That is exactly what we shouldn't do.”

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

The investigator called later.

“We found something in the camera system.”

Daniel answered.

“What?”

“The garage camera has a missing section.”

“How long?”

“About eleven minutes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Can it be recovered?”

“We're working on it.”

“Who disabled it?”

“We don't know.”

The investigator paused.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The missing footage wasn't erased remotely.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Someone accessed the camera system locally.”

Daniel looked at Sarah.

“The garage.”

“Yes.”

“Using the keypad?”

“Possibly.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“The contractor.”

“We're checking him.”

That afternoon, police questioned the contractor.

He denied entering the property.

He denied possessing the red bag.

He denied threatening Daniel.

But when shown the photograph of the glove, his expression changed.

The investigator noticed.

“You recognize it.”

“No.”

“You looked at it before answering.”

“I was surprised.”

“Why?”

“I've seen gloves like that.”

“Where?”

“At work.”

“Whose work?”

The contractor hesitated.

Daniel watched from another room.

The questioning continued.

Eventually the contractor admitted he had once owned identical gloves.

But he insisted he had thrown them away months earlier.

The police checked his vehicle.

They found no matching chemical product.

No red bag.

No evidence connecting him directly to the house.

He was released pending further investigation.

That night, Daniel received another message.

You keep looking at the wrong man.

He showed Sarah.

She stared at the screen.

“Someone knows what the police are doing.”

Daniel nodded.

“That means they may be watching us.”

Sarah looked toward the curtains.

“Don't.”

“What?”

“Don't look outside.”

Daniel understood.

They turned off the lights.

The children slept at the hotel.

The next morning, the investigator arrived with a laptop.

“We recovered part of the missing footage.”

Daniel leaned forward.

The screen showed the garage.

The image jumped.

A man entered.

He wore a dark jacket.

A baseball cap.

Gloves.

He walked toward the refrigerator.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

He raised one hand.

Daniel recognized the gesture.

The man was pointing.

Not at the camera.

At the refrigerator.

The recording ended.

Sarah whispered, “That's him.”

The investigator nodded.

“We believe so.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Can you identify him?”

“We're working on facial enhancement.”

The investigator advanced the footage.

Another figure appeared in the background.

Daniel went still.

“Wait.”

Sarah leaned closer.

The second person was only visible for a few seconds.

But Daniel recognized the jacket.

“No.”

The investigator paused.

“Who is that?”

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

“Mark.”

His brother.

The man he had believed was out of town.

The man Noah had claimed to see near the garage.

Sarah looked at Daniel.

“You said he wasn't here.”

“He told me he was away.”

The investigator looked at him.

“Are you certain?”

Daniel nodded.

“I spoke to him yesterday.”

The room fell silent.

Sarah whispered, “Then why was he in our garage?”

Daniel had no answer.

The investigator closed the laptop.

“We need to find your brother.”

Daniel immediately called him.

The phone rang.

No answer.

He called again.

Still nothing.

Then a text appeared.

Can't talk right now.

Daniel stared at it.

He typed one question.

Where are you?

The reply came less than a minute later.

Far away.

Daniel showed Sarah.

Her expression changed.

The investigator took a photograph of the messages.

Then Daniel received one final message.

Ask your wife what she saw at the grocery store.

Sarah's face went pale.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I don't know.”

But Sarah did.

She remembered the man near the produce section.

She remembered someone standing beside the strawberries.

She remembered thinking his face looked familiar.

And suddenly, another memory surfaced.

He had not been alone.

There had been a second person beside him.

A woman.

Sarah looked at Daniel.

“I remember.”

“What?”

“The grocery store.”

“What about it?”

“That day, Mark was there.”

Daniel stared.

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

The investigator stood.

“Then we need to know what happened in that store.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

The birthday had begun with a piece of fruit.

Now the trail led backward through months of unexplained encounters.

And someone had been waiting for them to notice.
