PART 6 – The Grocery Store Footage Exposed a Meeting Nobody Had Mentioned, and Sarah Discovered the Threat Was Connected to a Secret Daniel Had Kept

The store manager agreed to provide security footage.

Sarah, Daniel, and the investigator watched from a small office behind the customer-service desk.

The screen showed the produce section.

Sarah appeared first.

She was pushing the cart.

Daniel was beside her.

Emma was sitting in the child seat.

Mark entered the frame several seconds later.

But he was not alone.

The contractor walked beside him.

Daniel leaned forward.

“What?”

Sarah covered her mouth.

“They were together.”

The footage continued.

Mark spoke to the contractor.

The conversation could not be heard.

Then Mark looked toward Daniel.

He pointed.

The contractor turned.

Both men watched the family.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Why would my brother be meeting him?”

The investigator asked, “You said Mark had no connection to your former company.”

“He didn't.”

“Did he ever work with you?”

“No.”

“Did he know about the safety report?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I told him about it.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

Sarah looked at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because it wasn't important.”

She stared at him.

“It seems important now.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

The footage continued.

Mark and the contractor left the produce section.

Then another person appeared.

The woman Sarah remembered.

She approached the two men.

Daniel looked at her.

“Do you know her?”

“No.”

Sarah whispered, “I do.”

Daniel turned.

“Who?”

“I've seen her before.”

“Where?”

“At the school.”

The investigator looked up.

“Which school?”

“Emma's school.”

Sarah's voice shook.

“She works in the cafeteria.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Are you certain?”

“I think so.”

The investigator immediately requested school records.

The woman was identified as a temporary cafeteria worker.

She had worked there for three months.

Her employment had ended two weeks earlier.

The timing disturbed Sarah.

“Why did she leave?”

The school principal said she had resigned.

No explanation.

The investigator requested the relevant records.

Meanwhile, Daniel called Mark again.

This time, Mark answered.

“Where are you?”

A pause.

“Why?”

“Because you're in my garage.”

Silence.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I saw the footage.”

Mark exhaled.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

“I was trying to stop something.”

“What?”

“I can't talk about this on the phone.”

“Then come here.”

“No.”

“Mark.”

“I said no.”

Daniel's voice hardened.

“Was it you?”

“Was I what?”

“Did you put something in the strawberries?”

“No.”

“Did you bring the chemical?”

“No.”

“Did you threaten my family?”

“No.”

“Then why were you in my garage?”

Mark did not answer.

“Mark.”

“I was looking for something.”

“What?”

“Evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Sarah looked at him.

“What did he mean?”

“I don't know.”

The investigator spoke.

“Your brother may know more than he has told you.”

Daniel nodded.

“I'm starting to think everyone does.”

That afternoon, the school principal called.

The cafeteria worker had been identified as Melissa Grant.

She had previously worked for the company where Daniel had filed the safety report.

Sarah felt a chill.

“What was her position?”

“Administrative assistant.”

Daniel stared.

“That can't be right.”

The investigator asked why.

“She was involved in the report.”

“How?”

“She handled the documentation.”

“Did she know the contractor?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know Mark?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I don't know.”

The principal continued.

“She left the school two weeks ago.”

“Where did she go?”

“We don't know.”

The investigator thanked him.

Then Daniel received a call from Mark.

“Meet me.”

“Where?”

“The old warehouse.”

Sarah shook her head immediately.

Daniel saw her.

“I won't go alone.”

The investigator said, “Don't go at all until we arrange it.”

Daniel nodded.

He answered Mark.

“I can't.”

“You need to hear this.”

“Tell me now.”

“I found out who has been doing this.”

Daniel's breathing changed.

“Who?”

Mark whispered a name.

Daniel went still.

Sarah watched his face.

“Who?”

Daniel ended the call.

He looked at the investigator.

“It was Melissa.”

The investigator's expression tightened.

“Your brother says she has been following us.”

“Why?”

“She believes I destroyed her life.”

The investigator asked what Daniel had done.

Daniel finally explained everything.

After the workplace accident, the company had investigated the safety failure.

Melissa had altered one of the records.

Daniel had discovered the discrepancy.

He reported it.

The company blamed Melissa.

She lost her job.

The contractor lost his contract.

Mark had become involved because Melissa contacted him, claiming Daniel had lied.

Daniel had ignored the accusations.

“I thought it was over,” he said.

Sarah stared at him.

“You knew she was angry.”

“I didn't know she would do this.”

“You didn't tell me.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Sarah's voice became quiet.

“You weren't protecting me. You were deciding what I was allowed to know.”

Daniel looked down.

She was right.

The investigator asked whether Melissa had access to the house.

“No.”

“But she had access to the school.”

“Yes.”

“And Mark had the garage code.”

Daniel nodded.

The pieces began fitting together.

Melissa had watched them at the grocery store.

She had learned where Daniel bought food.

She had followed him.

She had used Mark to obtain access to the garage.

She had contaminated the strawberries.

But one question remained.

Why warn Emma?

Why leave the glove beside her bed?

The investigator said, “Because she wanted you to know.”

Sarah looked at him.

“Know what?”

“That this was deliberate.”

The investigator paused.

“She may have wanted fear more than physical harm.”

Daniel looked at Emma's bedroom.

“That doesn't make it better.”

“No.”

That evening, Mark came to the police station voluntarily.

He admitted that he had given Melissa the garage code.

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Why?”

Mark looked ashamed.

“She told me Daniel had ruined her life.”

“You believed her?”

“I believed she had evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“She showed me documents.”

Daniel stared.

“What documents?”

“Copies of the safety report.”

The investigator asked whether Mark had entered the garage.

“Yes.”

“Did you put anything in the food?”

“No.”

“Did you threaten the family?”

“No.”

“Did you know what Melissa planned?”

Mark shook his head.

“I knew she was angry.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You brought her to our house.”

Mark's eyes filled.

“I thought she wanted to talk.”

“She didn't.”

“I know.”

The investigator asked where Melissa might be.

Mark gave them an address.

An abandoned office building.

Police moved quickly.

Sarah and Daniel remained at the station.

Emma was with relatives.

Daniel stared at the floor.

“Mark betrayed us.”

Sarah corrected him.

“He made a terrible decision.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You still defend him?”

“No.”

She paused.

“But I'm not going to turn every mistake into the same thing.”

Daniel nodded.

He understood.

Not every wrong action carried the same intention.

But every choice still had consequences.

Police searched the abandoned building.

They found photographs.

Dozens of them.

The family.

The house.

The school.

The grocery store.

Emma.

Sarah.

Daniel.

The investigator called.

“We found her.”

“Melissa?”

“Yes.”

“Is she arrested?”

“She is in custody.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Sarah reached for his hand.

The investigator continued.

“She has admitted entering the garage.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“What about the food?”

“She says she didn't intend to seriously harm Emma.”

Sarah felt sick.

“What did she intend?”

“To make Daniel afraid.”

Daniel whispered, “She used my daughter to punish me.”

The investigator did not answer.

He did not need to.

Then came the final piece.

Melissa had written the notes.

She had sent the messages.

She had taken the photograph.

She had left the glove.

But she had not been working alone.

The investigator said, “There is another person.”

Daniel sat upright.

“Who?”

“We're still confirming.”

“Who?”

The investigator paused.

“Your brother's former attorney.”

Daniel stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

Sarah looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

The investigator continued.

“The attorney handled the workplace case.”

Daniel remembered.

He had fired him after discovering that evidence had been withheld.

The attorney had threatened to make Daniel regret it.

Sarah's face went pale.

“Then this wasn't only revenge.”

“No,” the investigator said.

“It was about the report.”

Daniel looked at Sarah.

“What did I uncover?”

She stared at him.

The answer was buried in a file Daniel had never opened.
