PART 2 – The Secret Room Beneath Their Father’s Workshop Held Photographs No Family Should Possess, and One Name Connected Daniel to the Mystery

NOTE: This part takes the family into the hidden workshop and reveals the history of Victor Hale, the mysterious child named Michael, and Daniel's unexpected connection to the old investigation.

They went to the workshop at sunrise.

The police followed them in two vehicles.

Emma had barely slept. Lily was with a trusted neighbor, and leaving her behind felt unbearable, but bringing her anywhere near the workshop felt worse.

Sarah carried the brass key.

Daniel walked beside Emma.

Neither spoke.

The workshop stood at the end of a narrow lane surrounded by overgrown trees. Emma remembered playing there as a child. Her father had kept everything organized, even when the rest of the building looked chaotic.

Now the place seemed different.

The windows were dark.

The door was unlocked.

One of the officers immediately noticed scratches around the lock.

“Someone has been here recently.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

The photograph from the previous night suddenly felt heavier in his mind.

They entered.

Dust covered most surfaces, but one path through the dust was clearly visible.

Someone had walked from the entrance toward the back wall.

Sarah pointed toward a cabinet.

“That.”

Daniel moved it aside.

A wooden panel appeared.

Sarah inserted the brass key.

It opened.

Behind it was a narrow staircase leading downward.

Emma stared into the darkness.

“You said Dad never let you enter.”

“He didn't.”

“Then why did he give you the key?”

“I don't know.”

They descended carefully.

The room beneath the workshop was larger than the building above suggested.

Shelves covered the walls.

Boxes were stacked from floor to ceiling.

There were old computers, recording equipment, envelopes, notebooks, photographs, and dozens of labeled folders.

Emma saw her childhood name on one.

She pulled it free.

Inside were photographs of herself at age eight.

At school.

At a birthday party.

Walking home.

She felt sick.

“Who took these?”

Sarah whispered, “Dad.”

Emma turned.

“You're sure?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Nobody answered.

Daniel examined the equipment.

“These cameras are old, but some of this technology isn't.”

One officer pointed toward a newer device.

“This was installed recently.”

Emma looked around.

The room had not been abandoned.

Someone had been maintaining it.

Then Daniel found the letter.

It was addressed to Emma and Sarah.

Their father's handwriting covered several pages.

Emma began reading.

He explained that Victor Hale had once been his closest business partner.

Their company had originally provided security systems.

But Victor gradually became obsessed with surveillance.

He wanted to know everything about people who could threaten his interests.

Their father objected.

Victor ignored him.

Eventually, the company began operating outside the law.

Their father tried to leave.

Victor threatened him.

Their father documented everything.

Then came the part about Michael.

Victor had a son.

The child had been placed in danger because Victor's enemies were searching for leverage.

Their father had taken the boy and arranged for him to live with another family.

Victor believed the child had been stolen.

Their father believed he had saved him.

The letter did not reveal where Michael had gone.

Emma looked at Sarah.

“Did Dad ever tell you this?”

“Only pieces.”

“Why?”

“Because he was afraid.”

The next document was a financial record.

Emma recognized the name of the company.

It had been dissolved years earlier.

But the account had remained active.

Money had continued moving.

The latest transaction was dated six months ago.

Daniel stared at it.

“That can't be right.”

The officer took the document.

“Who controls this account?”

“We don't know.”

Daniel moved to another shelf.

He found a folder with his own name.

Emma watched him open it.

Inside were photographs of Daniel's father.

Victor Hale stood beside him.

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

“My father knew him.”

Emma felt betrayed.

“You knew your father worked with Victor?”

“Not like this.”

Sarah looked through the folder.

“Your father's name appears in the records.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“He died when I was sixteen. He never told me any of this.”

Emma asked quietly, “Then why did you keep his old documents?”

“I didn't know what they were.”

Another photograph fell from the folder.

It showed Victor.

Beside him was a woman Emma had never seen.

The woman was holding a baby.

On the back was written:

MICHAEL — DAY THREE.

Sarah took the photograph.

“That's him.”

Emma asked, “How do you know?”

“Because Dad described the blanket.”

Emma looked closer.

The baby wore a small blue blanket.

Her father had mentioned it in the letter.

“He said the boy had that blanket when he was moved.”

Daniel looked toward the shelves.

“Then Michael was real.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

The officers immediately moved toward the staircase.

Someone had entered the workshop.

They heard footsteps.

Then silence.

The front door slammed.

One officer ran outside.

No one was there.

But another envelope had been left on the workshop floor.

Inside was a photograph of Emma.

Pregnant.

The back contained a message.

YOUR FATHER SAVED MICHAEL.

UNDERSTAND WHY BEFORE YOU FIND HIM.

Emma stared at the words.

“Why would Victor send this?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Maybe he didn't.”

The officer looked up.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel pointed at the paper.

“Victor wanted Michael found. Whoever sent this wants us to believe Victor is responsible for everything.”

Emma looked at him.

“So someone else is involved.”

Sarah suddenly remembered something.

“The recording.”

“What recording?”

“Dad left one final tape.”

They searched the room.

Eventually Sarah found a cassette hidden inside an old toolbox.

The officer played it.

Their father's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, Victor has probably already told you his version.”

Emma's eyes widened.

The recording continued.

“He will say I stole his son. He will say I betrayed him. He will say I built the system and later turned against him.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

Their father's voice continued.

“Some of that is true.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Her father admitted he had helped build the surveillance network.

He had believed it would protect people.

Then he realized it could also control them.

He tried to destroy it.

Victor stopped him.

Their conflict became bitter.

But their father revealed something else.

“There is one person I never trusted.”

The tape crackled.

“Not Victor.”

Sarah leaned closer.

The voice continued.

“Someone inside my own family.”

Emma's breath caught.

The tape ended.

No one spoke.

Then Daniel noticed another file.

It was labeled with a date seven years earlier.

The day their father died.

Inside was a single photograph.

Their mother.

Standing beside Victor.

Emma stared at it.

Her mother had always claimed she had never met Victor Hale.

But the photograph proved otherwise.

Sarah whispered:

“Mom lied.”

Emma felt the last piece of certainty disappear.

They returned home before sunset.

Their mother was waiting in the kitchen.

She looked at Emma.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Sarah.

Her face changed.

“You found the room.”

Emma stopped.

“You knew?”

Their mother sat down.

“I was hoping you never would.”

Emma placed the photograph on the table.

“Why did you lie about knowing Victor?”

Their mother's hands began trembling.

“Because your father asked me to.”

Emma stared at her.

“What did you do for Dad?”

Her mother looked toward the hallway.

“I helped him hide Michael.”

The room went silent.

Then she added:

“But Michael wasn't the only child your father was trying to protect.”

Emma looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Their mother whispered:

“It means the person watching Lily may not want Victor's son.”

She pointed toward Emma.

“They may want you.”
