PART 6 – Sarah Bell Had Disappeared Years Ago, Yet Her Address Was Current and the First Thing She Said Made Derek Question Everything His Father Had Told Them

NOTE: This part follows Derek’s discovery of Sarah Bell. Her testimony reveals that their father had concealed an important truth and that Elliot’s operation was built on an older betrayal involving the family.

The address led to a quiet neighborhood nearly three hours away. Derek drove with Lena in the passenger seat while Detective Morgan followed behind them. Neither sibling spoke much. The message warning them not to find Sarah had changed the feeling of the trip. They were no longer searching for a missing witness. They were approaching someone who apparently knew they were coming and had deliberately remained hidden.

The house looked ordinary. Small garden. White fence. Blue front door. A bicycle leaned against the garage. There was nothing threatening about it. Derek parked across the street and waited for Detective Morgan. “Do you want me to go first?” she asked. Derek nodded. “Yes.” They approached together. Detective Morgan knocked. For several seconds, there was no answer. Then a curtain moved behind the front window.

The door opened slightly.

An older woman looked through the gap.

She stared at Derek.

Then at Lena.

Her face went pale.

“You found it.”

Derek held up the photograph.

“We found this.”

Sarah opened the door.

“Come inside.”

They entered a living room filled with books. Sarah closed the curtains before sitting down. She looked at Detective Morgan and then at Derek.

“Your father told me this day might come.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

Derek felt his chest tighten.

“What did he say?”

Sarah looked toward Lena.

“He said if his children ever came looking for me, it meant the past had finally become dangerous.”

Lena sat forward.

“Why did he hide you?”

“He didn't.”

Sarah paused.

“I hid myself.”

“From who?”

“From Richard Gray.”

Derek's jaw tightened.

“Elliot's father.”

“Yes.”

Sarah explained that she had worked as an accountant for Derek's father and Richard Gray. She discovered that Richard had been moving company money into private accounts. When she confronted him, he threatened her. She went to Derek's father.

“He promised to help.”

“And did he?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

“Because he made a deal.”

Derek already knew what she meant.

“Silence.”

Sarah nodded.

“He believed he could stop Richard without destroying both families.”

“What happened?”

“Richard agreed to return most of the money.”

“Most?”

“Not all.”

The missing amount was substantial.

Sarah had kept copies of everything.

Derek asked why.

“Because I knew someone would eventually need proof.”

“Why didn't you go to the police?”

Sarah looked at Detective Morgan.

“Because twenty-four years ago, I didn't trust the system to protect me.”

Detective Morgan didn't argue.

“What about Elliot?”

“He knew about the missing money.”

“How?”

“His father told him.”

Sarah explained that Elliot grew up knowing pieces of the operation. After Richard died, Elliot began looking for the original records. He believed they could be used to pressure former partners.

Derek suddenly understood why Elliot had been interested in the archive.

It wasn't just about money.

It was about control.

He wanted the records because whoever possessed them could expose everyone connected to the old arrangement.

Sarah looked at Lena.

“Your father wanted to protect you.”

Lena's eyes filled.

“He should have told us.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't he?”

“Because he believed children were safer when they knew less.”

Derek looked away.

The same philosophy had shaped everything.

Their father had kept secrets.

Their mother had kept secrets.

Lena had disappeared without telling them everything.

Noah's father had concealed his own involvement.

Everyone had believed secrecy could prevent harm.

Instead, it had created openings for people like Elliot.

Sarah stood and walked toward a bookshelf.

She removed a thick book.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

She took out a small memory card.

“This contains the original financial records.”

Detective Morgan examined it.

“What else?”

“Audio.”

“Of what?”

“Richard and Elliot discussing the accounts.”

Derek's stomach tightened.

“Elliot knew about everything?”

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

“Since he was seventeen.”

That revelation changed Derek's understanding of Elliot.

He had not merely inherited a business scheme.

He had inherited knowledge of the family's weaknesses.

And he had spent years learning how to exploit them.

Sarah handed the memory card to Detective Morgan.

Then she looked at Derek.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Your father didn't only protect you.”

Derek waited.

“He protected Elliot.”

The room went silent.

Lena stared at Sarah.

“Why?”

“Because Elliot was a teenager when Richard threatened him.”

Derek frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Richard used his son to move documents.”

“He forced him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Elliot continue later?”

Sarah's answer was quiet.

“Because eventually he stopped being afraid and started benefiting.”

That distinction mattered.

Derek had wanted a simple explanation.

Elliot was not simply a victim.

He had become responsible for what he chose to do later.

But the origins were complicated.

The police reviewed the recordings.

One contained a conversation between Richard and Derek's father.

Richard demanded that the records disappear.

Derek's father refused.

Then Richard threatened to expose him.

Another recording contained Elliot as a teenager.

He asked his father what would happen if the truth came out.

Richard answered:

“People protect their families first.”

Derek replayed that sentence.

It sounded painfully familiar.

Sarah watched him.

“That sentence shaped all of you.”

Derek nodded.

It had.

The next recording was different.

Elliot was older.

He was speaking to Sarah.

“You kept copies.”

“Yes.”

“Give them to me.”

“No.”

“You know what happens if you don't.”

“I know.”

“Then why stay?”

“Because one day someone will need them.”

The recording ended.

Derek looked at Sarah.

“You knew we'd come.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Your father left instructions.”

“What instructions?”

“He told me to wait until Elliot was exposed.”

Derek felt his throat tighten.

“He knew?”

“He suspected.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

Lena started crying.

“So he knew Elliot was dangerous?”

“He knew Elliot was capable of becoming dangerous.”

“That isn't the same.”

“No.”

Sarah looked down.

“He was wrong about many things.”

The admission was painful because it was true.

Derek asked whether Sarah knew where Elliot had hidden the remaining assets.

She nodded.

“Some were transferred to accounts overseas.”

“Can they be recovered?”

“Possibly.”

Detective Morgan said she would pursue the financial trail.

Then Sarah asked a strange question.

“Where is Noah?”

Derek looked at her.

“Safe.”

Sarah nodded.

“I need to tell you something about him.”

Derek's heart tightened.

“What?”

“When Elliot watched your family, Noah wasn't the original target.”

“Then who was?”

“Lena.”

Derek frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Lena discovered the missing account.”

That explained everything.

Lena had accidentally stepped into the old conflict.

Elliot needed her frightened.

He needed her isolated.

He needed her to doubt herself.

He used Noah because he knew that was the one thing she would never ignore.

Derek looked at his sister.

“I should have known.”

“You couldn't.”

“But I should have asked.”

Lena reached across the table.

“You came when I needed you.”

That was enough.

Before leaving, Sarah gave Derek the photograph.

“Keep it.”

“Why?”

“Because your father wanted you to understand something.”

“What?”

“He wasn't protecting a secret.”

She looked directly at him.

“He was trying to protect a family that didn't know how to tell the truth.”

Derek folded the photograph carefully.

Outside, the afternoon sun was fading.

Detective Morgan received a call.

She listened for several seconds.

Then she looked at Derek.

“Elliot's lawyer just contacted us.”

“What does he want?”

“He says Elliot is willing to cooperate.”

Derek frowned.

“Why?”

Detective Morgan looked toward Sarah's house.

“Because someone else has started moving money.”

Derek felt the familiar chill.

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

His phone vibrated.

Another message.

You found Sarah.

Now find the person who hired Elliot.

Derek looked at Lena.

She whispered:

“It's not over.”

He nodded.

But this time, the family wasn't running.

They had evidence.

They had witnesses.

And they had finally learned that fear became weaker when everyone stopped keeping secrets.
