PART 3 – The Box Meant for Lucas Was Only the Beginning, Because Samuel Finally Revealed Why Maria’s Death Had Never Been Treated Like an Ordinary Accident

“Stay here.”

Lucas looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because I said so.”

He had never heard that tone from me before.

He nodded.

I watched him disappear into his room.

Another knock sounded.

I approached the front door but did not touch the handle.

“Who is it?”

Justin answered.

“Helena.”

His voice was almost pleasant.

“You need to leave.”

A quiet laugh came from the other side.

“You have something that belonged to my father.”

“I have nothing for you.”

“You don't even understand what he left you.”

“That is none of your business.”

“It became my business the moment you went to Samuel.”

My stomach tightened.

He knew.

“How did you know I was there?”

“Samuel isn't as careful as he thinks.”

I said nothing.

Justin waited.

Then he said, “Open the door.”

“No.”

His voice changed.

“Then I'll wait.”

I stepped away.

For several minutes, there was no sound.

Then footsteps moved down the porch.

A car engine started.

I waited another ten minutes before looking through the curtain.

The sedan was gone.

I locked every door again.

When I entered Lucas's room, he was sitting on the bed with the wooden box in his lap.

“Grandma,” he said quietly, “what is happening?”

I sat beside him.

“I don't know yet.”

“Is somebody angry with you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked at the box.

“Because someone thinks I have something that belongs to him.”

Lucas ran his thumb along the lid.

“What's inside?”

“I don't know.”

“Who was that man?”

I swallowed.

“His name is Justin.”

“Is he from the mansion?”

“Yes.”

Lucas looked at me.

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

That was not quite the same as saying he would not.

Lucas noticed.

“Grandma?”

“I need you to trust me.”

“I do.”

Those two words nearly broke me.

I put my hand over his.

“I will keep you safe.”

At six the next morning, my phone rang.

Samuel.

“Helena, are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Is Lucas with you?”

I sat upright.

“How do you know about Lucas?”

There was a pause.

“I told you not to mention him to Justin.”

“You knew he would come?”

“I suspected.”

“What is inside the box?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I know what Mr. Christopher told me. I don't know exactly what he placed there.”

“Then tell me what you do know.”

Samuel sighed.

“You need to come back.”

“I can't leave Lucas.”

“Bring him.”

“Why?”

“Because the danger is no longer limited to you.”

I looked toward the bedroom where Lucas was still asleep.

“Tell me the truth.”

Samuel's voice became quieter.

“Maria discovered Justin had been moving money from one of his father's companies.”

I closed my eyes.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“She confronted him?”

“We believe so.”

“And then?”

“Mr. Christopher discovered what was happening.”

“Why didn't he stop Justin?”

“He tried.”

“Then why was Maria killed?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Because someone wanted the investigation to disappear.”

I gripped the phone.

“You said there was evidence.”

“There was.”

“What happened to it?”

“It vanished from police custody.”

“How?”

“Someone inside the investigation removed it.”

My throat tightened.

“And Mr. Christopher knew?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He spent years rebuilding the case.”

“Did he find proof?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In the mansion.”

I looked at the wooden box.

“Is that what is inside?”

“I don't know.”

“Then what is inside?”

“A key.”

“A key to what?”

“The basement.”

I remembered the cottage document.

“The cottage has a basement.”

“Yes.”

“You want me to go there.”

“Mr. Christopher wanted you to.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew Justin would eventually learn about the property.”

I looked toward Lucas's room.

“Why did he mention my grandson?”

Samuel went silent.

“Samuel?”

When he finally answered, his voice had changed.

“Because Lucas's father was not who you believe he was.”

I could not speak.

“What does that mean?”

“I can't explain it over the phone.”

“Then explain it now.”

“You need to go to the cottage.”

“Today?”

“Today.”

“With Lucas?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Mr. Christopher left something there that belongs to him.”

The call ended.

Two hours later, Lucas and I were driving toward the lake.

I checked the rearview mirror constantly.

No sedan.

No headlights.

No sign of Justin.

The cottage appeared through the trees exactly as I remembered it.

Small.

Weathered.

Almost hidden beneath the branches.

I had seen it only once before.

Maria had taken me there when she was still alive.

She had cried that day.

I remembered asking what had happened.

She had wiped her face and said, “Mom, someday this will make sense.”

I had assumed she meant a relationship.

Now I wondered whether she had been trying to warn me.

We entered.

Dust covered the furniture.

The air smelled of damp wood.

Lucas stayed close.

“Where is the basement?”

“I don't know.”

We searched room after room.

Nothing.

Then Lucas stopped beside the fireplace.

“Grandma.”

He pointed beneath the mantel.

A small brass keyhole had been hidden in the wood.

I took the key from the box.

It fit.

I turned it.

Something clicked inside the wall.

The fireplace shifted.

Lucas stepped back.

A narrow staircase appeared behind it.

He stared at me.

“You knew this was here?”

“No.”

We descended.

At the bottom was a room no larger than a garage.

Shelves lined the walls.

Boxes filled them.

There were photographs, financial records, folders, and old notebooks.

A desk stood in the center.

An envelope waited on top.

My name was written across it.

I opened it.

The letter began with a sentence that made my eyes burn.

Dear Helena, if you are reading this, I am gone.

I sat down.

Lucas stood beside me.

I read slowly.

Mr. Christopher wrote that for eighteen years I had believed I worked for him because he needed a housekeeper.

That was not the whole truth.

He had hired me because he wanted me close enough to protect me without making me suspicious.

I stopped reading.

Lucas looked at me.

“What does it say?”

I shook my head.

“Let me finish.”

The letter explained that after Maria died, Mr. Christopher had discovered she had been investigating Justin.

She had found evidence that money was being diverted from his companies.

She had also discovered that information from those companies was being sold to competitors.

But there was something worse.

Maria had learned enough to put Justin at risk.

Then came the sentence I had spent seven years wishing I had never read.

Mr. Christopher believed Justin was responsible for the crash that killed her.

I covered my mouth.

Lucas touched my arm.

“Grandma?”

I could not answer.

The letter explained that Mr. Christopher had not been able to prove it publicly because the original evidence had been destroyed.

He had continued searching.

Eventually, he found what had disappeared.

I looked around the room.

My eyes fell on a small metal container inside the desk.

I opened it.

A flash drive.

Photographs.

A handwritten statement.

And a page bearing Justin's signature.

My knees weakened.

There was evidence of financial transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Instructions.

Enough to show that Justin had been hiding crimes for years.

But the final pages concerned Maria.

Mr. Christopher wrote that Daniel Reed, a young accountant who had helped Maria investigate Justin, had also been killed.

Two weeks before Maria.

I remembered Daniel.

Quiet.

Polite.

Always carrying a notebook.

Maria had once introduced him as a friend.

I had not seen him after that year.

The letter explained why.

Daniel was Lucas's biological father.

I looked at my grandson.

He stared back at me.

“What does that mean?”

I struggled to speak.

“It means the man you were told was your father wasn't your biological father.”

Lucas's face tightened.

“Who was?”

I looked at the page.

“Daniel.”

“Who is Daniel?”

“A man your mother loved.”

Lucas sat down.

I continued reading.

Maria had known she was being watched.

Before her death, she asked Mr. Christopher to protect Lucas if anything happened to her.

He had agreed.

That was why he had kept me employed.

That was why he had asked about Lucas's school.

That was why he had quietly paid for medical expenses when I could not afford them.

I had always thought those gestures were kindness.

They had been protection.

The final part of the letter explained the wooden box.

The key was meant to bring me here.

The evidence was meant to survive Mr. Christopher.

And everything he could legally transfer to me was intended to give Lucas a secure future.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Then I heard footsteps above us.

Lucas froze.

A door slammed.

Someone had entered the cottage.

We listened.

One step.

Then another.

Heavy and deliberate.

Lucas whispered, “Grandma.”

I put my arm around him.

“Stay behind me.”

A shadow crossed the top of the staircase.

Then Justin's voice came from above.

“Helena.”

My blood went cold.

He had found us.
