PART 2 – While I Boarded the Plane With the Children, Adrian Watched a Doctor Examine the Baby He Had Risked Everything to Claim as His Own

The clinic occupied the upper floors of a glass building overlooking the city.

Everything about it had been designed to make visitors feel safe, wealthy, and important.

Marble floors.

Quiet elevators.

Soft lighting.

Receptionists who never raised their voices.

Adrian liked places like this.

They made his life look orderly.

That morning, he walked through the entrance beside Chloe with his hand resting against the small of her back.

Margaret was already waiting.

His mother stood near a display of white lilies, dressed in a cream suit and holding her handbag with both hands.

Vanessa followed behind her.

“There you are,” Margaret said.

Adrian kissed his mother's cheek.

“Sorry I'm late.”

Margaret smiled.

“Your father would have been so proud.”

Adrian's expression softened.

“I know.”

Chloe placed a hand over her stomach.

“Everything is fine.”

Margaret immediately touched her arm.

“Of course it is.”

Vanessa smiled.

“We're finally getting our heir.”

Chloe laughed nervously.

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

“When will the doctor see us?”

“Soon.”

He checked his phone.

There were several missed calls from Elena.

He stared at her name.

Then deleted the notification.

His mother noticed.

“Don't let her ruin today.”

“She won't.”

“You've chosen your future.”

Adrian put his phone away.

“Yes.”

He believed that.

At least for another twenty minutes.

In the airport, I was standing at the gate with Noah and Lily.

Noah had fallen asleep against my side.

Lily was eating cookies from a paper bag.

A boarding announcement echoed overhead.

I checked the time.

We were leaving exactly as planned.

My phone vibrated again.

Adrian.

I watched his name appear.

I didn't answer.

It rang again.

Then again.

I switched the phone to silent.

Lily looked up.

“Is Daddy calling?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to answer?”

I shook my head.

She returned to her cookies.

“Okay.”

There was no argument.

No tears.

Children understand more than adults think they do.

Sometimes they simply stop asking questions because they already know the answers.

Back at the clinic, a nurse opened the door.

“Ms. Bennett?”

Chloe stood.

Adrian followed.

Margaret started to move behind them.

The nurse smiled politely.

“Only the patient and her partner, please.”

Margaret looked offended.

“I am the baby's grandmother.”

“I understand, ma'am.”

“We're family.”

The nurse remained courteous.

“The examination room is small.”

Margaret reluctantly sat down.

Vanessa joined her.

Adrian and Chloe entered.

The room was dim.

A large monitor glowed against the wall.

Dr. Reynolds greeted them.

“Good morning.”

Adrian shook his hand.

“Doctor.”

Chloe lay down.

Dr. Reynolds adjusted the equipment.

“Let's take a look.”

The room became quiet.

A heartbeat soon filled the speakers.

Margaret's voice drifted faintly through the wall.

“My grandson.”

Adrian smiled.

He reached for Chloe's hand.

“You hear that?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

The doctor moved the device slowly.

Then stopped.

He looked at the monitor.

He adjusted the angle.

Again.

Chloe noticed.

“What is it?”

Dr. Reynolds didn't answer.

Adrian's smile disappeared.

“Doctor?”

The physician picked up his tablet.

“Mr. Castillo, I need to clarify something before we continue.”

“What?”

“The prenatal DNA results were returned this morning.”

Adrian frowned.

“Okay.”

Dr. Reynolds looked at him.

“The results do not match your biological profile.”

For several seconds, Adrian didn't understand the words.

Then he did.

“No.”

Chloe sat upright.

“There must be a mistake.”

“We considered that possibility.”

Dr. Reynolds remained calm.

“The test was repeated.”

Adrian's face tightened.

“And?”

“The result was unchanged.”

Chloe stared at him.

Adrian stared at her.

Margaret burst through the door.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered.

She looked from her son to Chloe.

“Why does everyone look like this?”

Dr. Reynolds spoke carefully.

“The fetus is not biologically related to Mr. Castillo.”

Margaret's hand went to her chest.

“That is impossible.”

Vanessa appeared behind her.

“What did he say?”

Adrian looked at Chloe.

“You told me this child was mine.”

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

“It is yours.”

“The test says otherwise.”

“I don't know how.”

“You don't know?”

His voice rose.

Chloe flinched.

“I was scared.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“Scared of what?”

Chloe began crying.

“I thought Adrian was never going to leave Elena.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“So this was your plan?”

“No.”

“You got pregnant to trap him.”

“I didn't know whose baby it was at first.”

Silence.

Adrian took a step backward.

“What?”

Chloe covered her face.

Margaret's expression turned hard.

“Whose child is it?”

“I don't know.”

Vanessa whispered something under her breath.

Adrian heard it.

He turned toward Chloe.

“You don't know?”

She shook her head.

“I was with someone before Adrian.”

“When?”

“Before Miami.”

Adrian laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You told me the baby was conceived after our trip.”

“I thought it was.”

“You thought?”

She began sobbing.

Margaret pointed toward the door.

“Get her out of here.”

Chloe looked at her in disbelief.

“You all wanted this baby.”

“You lied.”

“You wanted a grandson more than you cared about anything else.”

Margaret's face hardened.

“Do not speak to me that way.”

Chloe laughed through her tears.

“You treated Elena worse than anyone.”

That silenced the room.

Vanessa looked away.

Adrian's phone vibrated.

He ignored it.

It vibrated again.

He finally answered.

“Hello?”

Attorney Bennett's voice came through.

“Mr. Castillo, you need to listen carefully.”

“I'm at the clinic.”

“I know.”

“What is this about?”

“The documents you signed this morning.”

Adrian looked toward the floor.

“What about them?”

“You granted Mrs. Castillo primary custody, unrestricted international travel rights, and temporary control of the family residence.”

His face went pale.

“I didn't realize—”

“I tried to explain them.”

“You knew I was in a hurry.”

“Yes.”

Bennett paused.

“And there is another matter.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“What?”

“The financial investigation has been formally opened.”

Adrian's breathing changed.

“What investigation?”

“The transfers from the marital accounts.”

He looked at Margaret.

Then Vanessa.

Neither knew what he was hearing.

Bennett continued.

“Mr. Castillo, the penthouse purchase and related transactions have been documented.”

Adrian whispered,

“Who filed the complaint?”

“You know who.”

The call ended.

He stared at the phone.

Vanessa approached.

“What happened?”

Adrian didn't answer.

He called Elena.

At the airport, my phone vibrated again.

I looked at the screen.

Adrian.

I declined the call.

A message appeared immediately.

“Please answer.”

I didn't.

Another arrived.

“We need to talk.”

I deleted it.

Then the boarding announcement began.

“Passengers traveling to Barcelona…”

I lifted Lily's bag.

“Come on.”

Noah woke.

“Are we going?”

“Yes.”

He rubbed his eyes.

“Okay.”

We boarded.

Once we were seated, Lily pressed her face against the window.

The plane began moving.

As the city disappeared beneath the clouds, I felt something inside me loosen.

Not happiness.

Not yet.

Just space.

Enough space to breathe.

Dawson had arranged everything.

A temporary home in Barcelona.

A local attorney.

School enrollment.

Accounts separated from Adrian's control.

Evidence secured.

I had spent months preparing while pretending I was still trying to save the marriage.

That was the part Adrian never understood.

Silence was not surrender.

It was preparation.

Hours later, while the aircraft crossed the Atlantic, Dawson called.

“They know about the money.”

I closed my eyes.

“How much?”

“All of it.”

“And the property?”

“Documented.”

I looked toward Noah and Lily.

“They won't be able to touch the children?”

“Not without a court order.”

“Good.”

Dawson hesitated.

“There is something else.”

I opened my eyes.

“What?”

“The clinic records.”

My stomach tightened.

“What about them?”

“The donor information may be more complicated than we expected.”

I glanced at my sleeping children.

“Explain.”

“We'll talk when you land.”

“Dawson.”

He was silent.

“Tell me.”

“The fertility treatment Chloe received involved donor material.”

I stared ahead.

“She told Adrian it was his.”

“Yes.”

“And it wasn't?”

“No.”

I looked out the window.

The clouds below us were endless.

Adrian had destroyed our marriage because he believed he was building a new family.

Now even that family was beginning to unravel.

But Dawson's next words changed the shape of the story.

“Elena, there may be another record.”

“What kind?”

“A historical medical record connected to the Castillo family.”

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with Chloe?”

“Maybe nothing.”

“And if it does?”

He paused.

“Then the problem may be older than your marriage.”

The call ended.

I sat in the dim cabin with my children asleep beside me.

For years, the Castillo family had spoken about blood as if it were sacred.

Heirs.

Names.

Legacy.

Family lines.

Suddenly, I wondered why.

Back at the clinic, Dr. Reynolds returned carrying a second file.

Adrian looked exhausted.

“What now?”

The doctor placed the file on the table.

“These records were flagged during the review.”

Margaret stared at him.

“Flagged for what?”

Dr. Reynolds opened the folder.

“Your family's historical fertility records.”

Margaret's expression changed.

“Close that.”

Adrian noticed.

“Why?”

“Because this is private.”

Dr. Reynolds looked at her.

“Mrs. Castillo, the records concern a possible discrepancy in the original birth documentation of Adrian Castillo.”

Adrian went still.

“What discrepancy?”

Margaret stood.

“We are leaving.”

“Mother?”

“Now.”

He looked at her face.

She was afraid.

Not angry.

Not embarrassed.

Afraid.

For the first time, Adrian realized the clinic had uncovered something his mother desperately wanted hidden.

And whatever it was, it had nothing to do with Elena.

It had been waiting for thirty-eight years.
