PART 3 – The Darkened Light Was Connected to an Old Maintenance Passage, and Elena Finally Told the Family What Her Sister Had Been Hiding

The aquarium staff closed the touch pool for the afternoon.

That decision caused immediate complaints from visitors, but Marcus ignored them. He placed a temporary barrier around the exhibit while another employee redirected families toward the penguin gallery.

Mia stood behind the barrier with Claire and Daniel.

She kept staring at the dark ceiling light.

“Check the light,” she repeated.

Daniel glanced at her.

“We heard it.”

“I think Lena wrote that.”

Claire looked at the identification card in Marcus's evidence bag.

“Probably.”

“No,” Mia said. “Not probably.”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“You really think she left those things for someone to find?”

Mia nodded.

“Why?”

“Because she knew nobody would listen to her.”

The answer was simple.

It was also unsettling.

Elena had gone into the staff office with Marcus. Ten minutes later, she returned holding an old folder.

She looked exhausted.

“I need to show you something.”

Claire exchanged a glance with Daniel.

“Us?”

Elena nodded.

“You were the ones who found the first clue.”

Mia smiled faintly.

“I found Gray.”

Elena smiled back.

“Yes.”

They followed her to a small staff room behind the exhibit.

The walls were covered with photographs of sea turtles, sharks, penguins, and old aquarium events. A coffee machine hummed in the corner.

Elena placed the folder on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Old ones.

One showed a younger Elena standing beside a teenage girl.

Lena.

She wore a blue scarf around her shoulders and the same silver heart necklace.

Mia leaned closer.

“She looks happy.”

“She was,” Elena said.

“What happened?”

Elena sat down.

“My sister was seventeen when she died.”

Daniel folded his arms.

“What was she doing here?”

“She volunteered during school holidays. She wanted to study marine biology.”

“She loved stingrays?”

“She loved all animals, but stingrays were her favorite.”

Elena opened another photograph.

Lena stood beside the touch pool.

The image was dated seven years earlier.

Mia pointed.

“That corner.”

Elena stared at the photograph.

“Yes.”

“The same corner?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at the picture.

Lena was standing exactly where Mia had first noticed Gray avoiding the wall.

“What was she doing?”

Elena took a breath.

“She told me something was wrong with the pool.”

Claire leaned forward.

“What kind of wrong?”

“She said someone had been moving animals between tanks without recording it.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why would someone do that?”

“I asked her the same question.”

“And?”

“She said she didn't know.”

Elena's fingers tightened around the edge of the photograph.

“She believed someone was using the aquarium after hours.”

The room became quiet.

“For what?” Daniel asked.

“I never found out.”

“Did she tell anyone?”

“She tried.”

“Who?”

“Thomas Vale.”

Daniel looked toward the door.

“The former technician.”

Elena nodded.

“He was responsible for maintenance. Lena thought he might help her.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“What did he say?”

“That she was imagining things.”

Mia frowned.

“She wasn't.”

Elena looked at her.

“No.”

She opened the folder again.

Inside was a handwritten note.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Elena placed it on the table.

“I found this in Lena's bedroom after she died.”

Claire read the first line silently.

Then her eyes widened.

“What does it say?”

Elena turned the page toward them.

“If something happens to me, look where the light doesn't reach.”

Daniel read it twice.

Mia pointed toward the ceiling.

“The light.”

Elena nodded.

“That is what I think.”

Marcus entered the room.

“We found the maintenance plans.”

He placed a large diagram on the table.

The aquarium had changed considerably over the years, but the old structure was still visible.

Marcus traced a finger along a narrow passage behind the touch pool.

“There used to be an access corridor here.”

Claire looked at him.

“Used to?”

“It was sealed after renovations.”

“Where does it lead?”

“Under the old filtration room.”

Mia looked at the diagram.

“And the light?”

Marcus pointed.

“Above it.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Could someone still get in there?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Possibly.”

Elena stood.

“We need to see it.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Not without authorization.”

“She died because nobody listened to her.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don't.”

Elena's voice cracked.

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“I'll get security.”

They left the staff room.

Mia remained beside the table.

She touched nothing.

Then she noticed something in the photograph of Lena.

A small dark shape appeared behind her sister.

At first it looked like a shadow.

Mia picked up the photograph carefully.

“Mum.”

Claire came closer.

“What?”

“Who's that?”

Claire looked.

There was a figure reflected in the glass behind Lena.

A man.

Only part of his face was visible.

Daniel took the photograph.

Elena saw it.

Her expression changed.

“Thomas.”

“How do you know?”

“Because of the jacket.”

“What jacket?”

“He wore that every day.”

Marcus returned.

“What happened?”

Elena handed him the photograph.

He stared.

“That's strange.”

“What?”

“The reflection.”

Marcus turned the photograph toward the light.

“That's not the filtration room.”

“Where is it?”

“Behind the old exhibit entrance.”

Daniel looked at Elena.

“Could Lena have taken this picture intentionally?”

“She wasn't taking pictures.”

“She might have been.”

Elena shook her head.

“She hated photographs.”

Mia spoke quietly.

“She wasn't taking a picture of herself.”

Everyone looked at her.

“She was taking a picture of him.”

Nobody laughed.

Nobody dismissed her.

Marcus placed the photograph inside a protective sleeve.

“We'll document it.”

Daniel nodded.

“But we should know something.”

“What?”

“The necklace and ID card weren't simply dropped into the pool.”

Marcus looked at him.

“I thought they were.”

“The chain was beneath the filtration grate.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

Daniel pointed at the maintenance diagram.

“If the old corridor runs beneath the pool, somebody could have placed them there from underneath.”

Marcus's expression tightened.

“That would explain the position.”

Elena whispered, “Thomas.”

Marcus didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the ceiling.

The dead light was visible through the staff-room window.

Then the light came back on.

Everyone stopped.

A second later, it flickered.

Then a third.

Mia stood up.

“Someone is there.”

Daniel looked at her.

“How do you know?”

She pointed toward the hallway.

“Because the light wasn't broken.”

The bulb went dark again.

This time, the entire corridor lost power.

Emergency lights came on.

A metallic bang echoed from somewhere below them.

Marcus grabbed his radio.

“Security to the old filtration area.”

A voice answered.

“Already there.”

Then another voice cut through.

“Marcus, we have a problem.”

“What?”

“The old access door is open.”

Elena stared at him.

“That door was sealed.”

Marcus looked at the others.

“It was.”

Mia stepped closer to Claire.

Daniel put an arm around both of them.

From beneath the floor came another sound.

A slow scrape.

Something heavy moving across metal.

Then silence.

Elena whispered, “Someone knew we would find the necklace.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What makes you say that?”

“Because the maintenance door wasn't open yesterday.”

Mia looked toward the dark corridor.

“Then somebody opened it today.”
