PART 10 – The Name on the Original Investigation Forced Mara to Revisit Every Official Conclusion She Had Once Trusted Without Question

The investigator's name was Arthur Bell.

Mara remembered him from the original inquiry.

He had been polite, methodical, and almost impossible to read. He had questioned every crew member separately and spent three days reviewing the aircraft's maintenance history.

Then he had issued the report that everyone accepted.

Seven years later, his name appeared on a document that should never have existed.

Mara called the number listed in an old professional directory.

It was disconnected.

She tried another.

Disconnected.

Elena sat across from her at the kitchen table.

“He disappeared two years ago.”

Mara looked up.

“How do you know?”

“Daniel looked for him.”

“Why?”

“To ask about the investigation.”

“And?”

“He said Arthur refused to speak.”

Eva sat beside the window.

“My mother met him.”

Mara turned.

“When?”

“After the crash.”

“Where?”

“At a hospital.”

Elena looked at her daughter.

“You never told me that.”

“I was afraid.”

Mara moved closer.

“What did he say?”

Eva thought for a moment.

“He asked me whether I remembered the man at the airport.”

“Which man?”

“The one who wasn't supposed to be there.”

Mara felt a familiar tension settle into her chest.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Who was he?”

Eva looked at the photograph.

“The other Harrow.”

Mara stared at her.

“Daniel's brother.”

Eva nodded.

“His name was Samuel.”

Elena looked stunned.

“Daniel told me Samuel died before we met.”

“He didn't.”

Mara closed her eyes.

The pieces were becoming more uncomfortable.

The stranger in the photograph.

The false identity.

The company records.

The investigation.

The hidden evidence.

It was possible the conspiracy had involved more people than Richard Cole.

But possibility was not proof.

Mara had learned that lesson the hard way.

She spent the next two days searching archived aviation records, court documents, and company filings.

Samuel Harrow appeared nowhere.

Not in corporate records.

Not in passenger manifests.

Not in the accident report.

Not even in Daniel's family records.

It was as if the man had never existed.

That bothered Mara more than finding his name would have.

She contacted Thomas Vale.

He agreed to meet her at a small café near the airport.

When he arrived, he looked thinner than he had at the trial.

“You found something.”

“I found a photograph.”

Mara placed it on the table.

Thomas stared at it.

His expression changed immediately.

“Where?”

“The Harrow house.”

Thomas leaned back.

“That's Samuel.”

“You knew him.”

“Yes.”

“Why wasn't he in the report?”

Thomas rubbed his forehead.

“Because Cole told us he didn't exist.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It did at the time.”

Mara waited.

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Samuel was involved with the company before Daniel.”

“What did he do?”

“He handled acquisitions.”

“Legal?”

“Mostly.”

“Mostly?”

Thomas looked away.

“He knew how to move ownership without leaving obvious records.”

Mara understood.

Shell companies.

Hidden accounts.

False identities.

“Did Samuel know about Flight 417?”

“He helped arrange the aircraft.”

“Did he know about the maintenance defect?”

Thomas nodded.

“Did he cause it?”

“No.”

“Then what did he do?”

Thomas hesitated.

“He arranged for Eva to be on the flight.”

Mara stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Samuel believed Elena had evidence.”

“What kind?”

“Evidence that Daniel had unknowingly become part of the financial network.”

Mara's expression hardened.

“So Samuel used Eva as leverage.”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“He wanted to protect her.”

“By putting her on an aircraft that crashed?”

“He didn't know it would crash.”

Mara looked at him.

“Who did?”

Thomas's face went blank.

“I don't know.”

“You know more than that.”

“I know what I was told.”

“Tell me.”

Thomas sighed.

“Cole said there would be a controlled emergency.”

Mara's hands tightened.

“And when the hydraulic system failed?”

“Everything changed.”

“Who knew?”

Thomas looked toward the café window.

“Samuel.”

Mara stopped.

“He knew afterward?”

“He knew before.”

“Then why didn't he warn anyone?”

“He tried.”

Mara waited.

“He called Arthur Bell.”

The name struck her.

“The investigator.”

Thomas nodded.

“Arthur was the one person Samuel trusted.”

Mara looked at the photograph again.

“Then Arthur knew.”

“Yes.”

“And he still signed the official report.”

Thomas didn't answer.

Mara leaned forward.

“What aren't you telling me?”

Thomas met her eyes.

“Arthur was threatened.”

“By Cole?”

“No.”

“By Samuel?”

Thomas shook his head.

“By Daniel.”

Mara froze.

“Daniel threatened him?”

“Not directly.”

“What does that mean?”

“Daniel discovered that Samuel had used his identity.”

Mara's mind raced.

“So Daniel was trying to expose Samuel.”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide his brother?”

“Because Daniel was protecting his daughters.”

“From Samuel?”

“From everyone.”

Mara sat back.

The story was no longer a straight line.

It was a web of people protecting themselves, each believing their secrecy was justified.

When she returned to the lake house, Daniel was there.

He looked older than he had a year earlier.

Mara placed the photograph on the table.

He stared at it.

“Where did you get this?”

“Eva found it.”

Daniel sat slowly.

“You shouldn't have.”

“Who is he?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Samuel?”

His eyes closed.

“Yes.”

“Your brother.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you tell everyone you were an only child?”

“Because Samuel was dangerous.”

“To whom?”

“To everyone.”

Mara remained standing.

“What did he do?”

Daniel looked toward the lake.

“He built the financial network that Cole later used.”

“And you knew?”

“I suspected.”

“You investigated him.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Elena had evidence.”

“Yes.”

“You gave Thomas access.”

Daniel nodded.

Mara's voice became quiet.

“And then Flight 417 happened.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I thought Samuel was behind it.”

“Was he?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Mara placed the letter on the table.

“Someone says the accident report was false.”

Daniel read it.

Then he looked at her.

“It was.”

Mara's heart sank.

“Why?”

“Because Arthur Bell changed it.”

“Why would he?”

“Because he discovered something worse.”

“What?”

Daniel stood.

“My brother wasn't the person controlling the operation.”

Mara waited.

“Someone above him was.”

“Who?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“I never found out.”

His phone rang.

He answered.

Nobody spoke on the other end.

Then Daniel's face went pale.

He lowered the phone.

“It's Arthur.”

Mara stared.

“Where?”

Daniel looked at her.

“He says he wants to meet you.”

“Why me?”

“He says you were the only person who could recognize the missing piece.”

Mara felt the same chill she had felt when she first saw the photograph.

“What missing piece?”

Daniel handed her the phone.

Arthur Bell's voice came through.

“Mara Voss.”

“Yes.”

“I owe you seven years of truth.”

Mara said nothing.

Arthur continued.

“And if I don't tell you now, someone else will decide what you remember.”

The line went dead.
