PART 6 – Lucas Returned to the House Carrying the Last Piece of Evelyn’s Secret, and Elena Realized Someone Had Been Watching Her Since the Funeral Began

A man's voice came from the hallway.

“I didn't want to come.”

Elena turned.

A stranger stood near the open doorway.

He was perhaps in his early forties, with dark hair touched by gray and a narrow scar beneath his left eye. He wore a plain gray shirt and carried no bag.

Mara stared at him.

He stared back.

Neither spoke.

Sloan lowered his eyes.

Daniel looked away.

Elena knew before anyone said the name.

“Lucas?”

The man nodded.

“Yes.”

Mara took one step toward him.

Then stopped.

Lucas looked at her with an expression Elena could not read.

“You look like him.”

Mara's eyes filled.

“My father?”

Lucas shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Elena.

“You look like our mother.”

Elena felt her throat tighten.

Mara covered her mouth.

“Our mother?”

Lucas nodded.

“Evelyn.”

Elena stared at him.

“You knew her.”

“She raised me.”

The sentence seemed impossible.

Mara stepped closer.

“Then why didn't she tell me about you?”

Lucas looked down.

“Because she believed knowing me would put you in danger.”

“And now?”

“Now she's dead.”

Mara flinched.

Elena stepped between them.

“Who is watching us?”

Lucas looked toward the windows.

“Everyone who thinks your mother left something valuable behind.”

Thomas closed the study door.

“What exactly did Evelyn leave?”

Lucas looked at him.

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“Who stole the foundation money.”

Daniel's expression changed.

Sloan stood very still.

Elena noticed both reactions.

“You know.”

Neither answered.

Lucas walked to the desk.

He placed a small envelope beside the photographs.

“My mother gave me this six months ago.”

Elena stared.

“Why didn't she give it to me?”

“Because she wasn't sure you would survive the truth.”

Mara whispered, “What does that mean?”

Lucas looked at her.

“She knew someone close to you had been feeding information to Richard.”

Sloan's face hardened.

“That is a lie.”

Lucas did not respond.

Elena looked at Daniel.

Then Mara.

Then Thomas.

Three people.

Three possible secrets.

She hated that her mind immediately began calculating who had access to the house.

Lucas opened the envelope.

Inside was a key.

Not brass.

Black steel.

And a handwritten address.

Thomas recognized it.

“That warehouse.”

Lucas nodded.

“The same place where Anthony disappeared.”

Elena looked at Daniel.

“You told me no one knew where it was.”

“I was wrong.”

“No.”

Lucas said quietly, “He wasn't.”

Everyone turned.

Lucas looked at Daniel.

“You knew.”

Daniel nodded.

“I knew.”

“You knew Anthony survived.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew where he went.”

“Yes.”

Mara stepped toward him.

“You lied to me.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I lied because your father asked me to.”

Mara's face changed.

“My father is dead.”

Lucas answered.

“He isn't.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Elena felt the room narrow around them.

Sloan suddenly reached for the leather case.

Thomas caught his wrist.

“Don't.”

Sloan pulled free.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

Thomas stood between him and the door.

“I know exactly what I'm doing.”

Elena looked at Lucas.

“Where is Anthony?”

Lucas shook his head.

“He won't come here.”

“Why?”

“Because he believes Evelyn is still protecting him.”

“She isn't.”

“She is.”

Elena stared.

“My mother is dead.”

Lucas's eyes softened.

“She planned for that.”

Elena looked down.

A cold realization formed.

Evelyn had known she was dying.

She had arranged the funeral.

She had hidden the documents.

She had called Mara.

She had summoned Lucas.

Everything had been prepared.

But why had she left Elena with so much uncertainty?

Because Elena was supposed to discover the truth in stages.

Lucas reached into his pocket.

He removed a small cassette.

“This is the last recording.”

Elena looked at the old player.

Thomas inserted it.

Static.

Then Evelyn's voice.

“Elena, if you are hearing this, then Lucas has finally come home.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Her mother's voice was weaker than she remembered.

“I am sorry.”

The recording continued.

“I lied because the truth would have destroyed more than one family.”

A pause.

“Daniel knows where Anthony is.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“Richard knows where the money went.”

Sloan said, “Turn it off.”

No one moved.

“And Lucas knows why.”

The tape crackled.

“If any of them tells you the story without showing you the documents, do not believe them.”

Elena opened her eyes.

The recording continued.

“There is one person I trusted completely.”

Elena held her breath.

“Thomas.”

Thomas looked startled.

Evelyn's voice softened.

“But trust him only with the evidence.”

The tape ended.

Sloan laughed bitterly.

“So she chose you.”

Thomas did not answer.

Elena turned to him.

“You knew.”

“I knew some of it.”

“How much?”

“Enough to understand why she was afraid.”

“Did you know Daniel was having an affair with Mara?”

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“No.”

Daniel's shoulders dropped.

Elena looked toward Mara.

Mara was crying silently.

Lucas stood beside her.

For the first time, Elena saw how much younger Mara looked without the confident expression she had worn when she entered the house.

She looked lost.

Elena understood something then.

Mara had not come to steal her marriage.

She had been pulled into a story that began long before she was born.

That did not excuse the affair.

But it changed the shape of the betrayal.

Elena turned toward Daniel.

“Why did you marry me?”

He looked at her.

“I loved you.”

“That isn't enough.”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“Your mother hired me years before we met. I stayed close because I was investigating your father.”

Elena stared.

“So our marriage began as an investigation.”

“At first.”

“And then?”

“I fell in love with you.”

“When did you stop investigating?”

“I never did.”

Elena looked away.

It hurt more than she expected.

Lucas quietly said, “There is one thing you should know.”

Elena turned.

“My mother did not leave you the foundation.”

“What did she leave me?”

Lucas pointed toward the framed photograph on the marble table.

“Her house.”

Elena frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

“It does if you understand the deed.”

Thomas opened the folder.

His face changed.

“The property wasn't transferred to Elena.”

Lucas nodded.

“It was transferred to me.”

Mara stared.

“To Lucas?”

Thomas turned the document around.

The signature was Evelyn's.

The beneficiary was Lucas Bell.

Elena felt the floor disappear beneath her.

Her mother had left her home to a son nobody was supposed to know existed.

Then Lucas whispered the final part.

“She wanted me to give it to you.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because she believed you were the only person who could decide what should happen to the family after the truth came out.”

A sound came from outside.

Glass shattered.

Everyone turned.

A bullet struck the wall above Sloan's head.

He dropped.

Daniel grabbed Elena.

Lucas pulled Mara behind the desk.

Thomas reached for the light.

The room went dark.

And somewhere downstairs, someone began walking through the house.
