PART 7 – The Deal Elena Made to Save Her Daughter Finally Comes to Light, and Daniel Must Choose Between Revenge and the Truth

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Mara looked at her mother as though she had never seen her before.

“You told Victor where Dad was.”

Elena nodded.

“I did.”

Daniel's voice was barely controlled.

“You knew they were going to kill him.”

“I knew they wanted to stop him.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

Elena wiped her face.

“It isn't.”

Mara stepped away from her.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Your father discovered the accounts. He knew Victor had been stealing from Bellweather. He also discovered Victor had people inside the company who could make evidence disappear.”

“So Dad was going to expose him.”

“Yes.”

“And you stopped him.”

“I tried to.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor showed me photographs.”

Mara's expression changed.

“Of me?”

Elena nodded.

“You were nine. He knew your school. He knew where you played. He knew when I took you to your grandmother's.”

Mara felt sick.

“He threatened me.”

“He didn't need to threaten you directly. He told me what would happen if your father went to the police.”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“And you believed him.”

“I had no reason not to.”

Elena's voice broke.

“I was a mother.”

Mara swallowed.

“You gave him Dad's location.”

“Yes.”

“And Victor killed him.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you still alive?”

Elena looked at her.

“Because I gave Victor something else.”

“What?”

“The original ledger.”

Daniel stared.

“So Victor already has it.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“I gave him a false copy.”

Mara froze.

“You tricked him.”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“Your father had already moved the original.”

“To where?”

Elena looked at Daniel.

“With your father.”

Daniel's eyes widened.

“He gave it to my father.”

“Yes.”

“And my father hid it.”

“Yes.”

“Then Victor killed him for nothing.”

“No.”

Elena's voice became quieter.

“He didn't know.”

Daniel looked down at the folder.

“That means the original is still somewhere.”

“Yes.”

Mara pointed toward the signed page.

“What is this?”

“The agreement I made with Victor.”

“Why does it say I would do whatever necessary to protect my daughter?”

“Because that was the condition.”

“What condition?”

“That I would never tell you the truth.”

Mara stared.

“All these years…”

“I thought silence would keep you alive.”

“You let me believe Dad died in an accident.”

“Yes.”

“You let me hate him for leaving us.”

“I know.”

“You let me think I was imagining things.”

“I know.”

Mara's voice shook.

“You didn't protect me.”

Elena nodded.

“No.”

She looked at her daughter.

“I protected the secret.”

The words hurt more than an excuse would have.

Daniel stepped toward the folder.

“There has to be more.”

He turned pages.

Near the back was a handwritten map.

A church.

A cemetery.

A marked grave.

Daniel frowned.

“This is my father's grave.”

Mara looked at him.

“Why would the ledger be there?”

“It isn't.”

He pointed to a small symbol beside the grave.

“A key.”

Elena suddenly understood.

“The memorial wall.”

Daniel looked at her.

“My father had a memorial plaque there.”

“He told me there was a compartment behind it.”

Daniel grabbed his coat.

“We're going.”

Mara followed.

Elena remained behind.

“Mara.”

She turned.

“I need to come.”

Mara hesitated.

Then she nodded.

The cemetery was nearly empty when they arrived.

The morning fog had settled low across the grass.

Daniel walked directly to the memorial wall.

He found his father's plaque.

Behind it was a small metal panel.

The brass key opened it.

Inside was a packet wrapped in plastic.

Daniel removed it.

The original ledger.

Mara looked at it.

“So this is what everyone died for.”

Daniel opened it.

The pages were filled with names.

Payments.

Accounts.

Dates.

Then he found Victor's signature.

Repeatedly.

There was enough evidence to expose him.

But one page was missing.

Daniel looked up.

“Where's the final page?”

Elena's face changed.

Mara noticed.

“Mom?”

Elena looked toward the cemetery entrance.

Victor stood there.

He was older than the man Mara remembered from the photographs, but his posture was unchanged.

Calm.

Almost polite.

He wasn't carrying a weapon.

He didn't need to.

“Give me the ledger,” he said.

Daniel stepped in front of Mara.

Victor smiled.

“You still think this is about money.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“It isn't?”

“No.”

Victor looked at Mara.

“Your father understood that.”

Mara held the ledger.

“What did he understand?”

Victor's expression softened.

“He understood that people destroy themselves when they think truth is worth more than the lives around them.”

“You killed him.”

“I gave him a choice.”

Mara's voice hardened.

“He chose not to help you.”

“He chose you.”

Victor looked at Elena.

“And she understood the cost.”

Elena stepped forward.

“You promised you would leave her alone.”

“I did.”

“You watched her.”

“I watched the evidence.”

“You used Daniel.”

Victor glanced at him.

“I gave him information.”

“You lied to me,” Daniel said.

“I told you what your father wanted you to believe.”

Daniel took one step toward him.

Victor did not move.

“You made me hate Mara's family.”

“No.”

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“You chose to hate them.”

Daniel stopped.

The distinction cut deeper than an insult.

Victor looked at Mara.

“Your father hid the final page.”

“Where?”

Victor smiled.

“You're holding it.”

Mara looked down at the ledger.

The missing page wasn't missing.

It had been folded inside the back cover.

She pulled it out.

The page contained one name.

Elena.

Mara stared.

Beneath her mother's name was a payment.

A large one.

Daniel looked at Elena.

“You took money.”

Elena's face collapsed.

“I did.”

Mara's eyes filled.

“Why?”

“To pay for your safety.”

Victor smiled.

“There it is.”

Mara looked at him.

“You want me to hate her.”

“I want you to understand her.”

“You paid my mother to betray my father.”

“I paid her to keep you alive.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You're twisting it.”

Victor shrugged.

“Perhaps.”

Mara looked at the page.

Then at her mother.

“Did you ever spend the money?”

“No.”

“Where is it?”

Elena pointed toward the ledger.

“I returned it.”

Mara frowned.

“When?”

“The day your father died.”

Daniel looked at Victor.

Victor's expression changed for the first time.

Mara understood.

“The payment was never completed.”

Elena nodded.

“I refused it.”

Victor stepped forward.

“That isn't what happened.”

Elena looked directly at him.

“I never took your money.”

Victor's face hardened.

Mara suddenly saw the truth.

The payment existed on paper.

But there was no proof it had ever reached Elena.

Someone had created the transaction.

Someone had forged the signature.

Someone had needed Elena to appear guilty.

Daniel turned the page over.

There was another signature.

His father's.

And beneath it:

VICTOR'S LAST LIE.

Victor took one step backward.

Police sirens sounded in the distance.

Mara looked at Daniel.

“You called them?”

He nodded.

“I sent the ledger to the police before we came.”

Victor stared at him.

For the first time, fear crossed his face.

He turned to run.

Daniel caught his arm.

But Mara stepped between them.

“Don't.”

Daniel looked at her.

“He killed our fathers.”

“I know.”

“He ruined our lives.”

“I know.”

“You want me to let him go?”

“No.”

Mara looked at Victor.

“I want him to face what he did.”

Daniel slowly released him.

The police arrived moments later.

Victor was taken away.

But before he disappeared into the waiting car, he looked back at Elena.

“You think this is over?”

Elena didn't answer.

Mara did.

“It is for us.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“You haven't seen the last page.”

Mara's expression changed.

She looked down.

The page in her hand was not the final page.

There was writing on the back.

One sentence.

YOUR MOTHER WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO MADE A DEAL.

Mara looked at Daniel.

He had gone pale.
