The vehicle outside did not approach the house.
It waited.
Mara watched it through a narrow gap in the curtain.
No headlights.
No movement.
Ben whispered, “Could be the sheriff.”
Mara shook her head.
“They wouldn't park like that.”
Ruth closed the archive door.
“We have to leave through the back.”
Helen gathered the files.
“Take only the original documents.”
Mara looked at Tiger.
“He comes with us.”
Anna held Eli's hand.
The boy was trembling.
“My dad called.”
Mara nodded.
“He did.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
Eli stared at her.
“You know?”
“I heard his voice.”
That was enough to give the boy something he had not had in months.
Hope.
They left through the kitchen.
A narrow path led behind the house into the woods.
The vehicle remained outside.
No one followed.
That frightened Mara more.
Whoever was waiting seemed confident they knew where everyone was going.
The group reached the road two hundred yards away.
Ben had arranged another vehicle.
They drove toward the abandoned warehouse.
Daniel's warning stayed in Mara's mind.
Don't bring Tiger to the warehouse.
Yet every instinct told her Tiger belonged there.
He had been part of the study.
The missing animals had been connected to him.
And Daniel had mapped the location.
Why warn them away?
The answer came when they reached the outskirts.
A second vehicle was parked near the warehouse.
White pickup.
Mara recognized it.
“The scarred man.”
Ben slowed.
They stopped behind a line of trees.
The warehouse stood beyond a chain-link fence.
The main doors were locked.
But a side entrance was open.
Mara looked at Helen.
“Why would they leave it open?”
“They want someone inside.”
Ben nodded.
“A trap.”
Mara stared at the building.
Then at Tiger.
The cat was sitting calmly.
His ears pointed toward the warehouse.
He was not frightened.
“He wants to go.”
Ben shook his head.
“Daniel specifically told us not to.”
“Maybe Daniel knew they were watching.”
“What if the warning was meant to keep Tiger out of danger?”
Mara considered it.
Then she noticed something.
The warehouse had a second building behind it.
A smaller structure.
Its windows were covered.
Its roof was newer.
She pointed.
“That's where they are.”
Helen looked.
“The records mention a secondary holding area.”
“Can we reach it?”
“From the drainage ditch.”
They moved quietly.
The ditch led behind the warehouse.
A rusted door stood at ground level.
Ben forced it open.
Inside was darkness.
Then they heard scratching.
Mara froze.
Animal sounds.
Multiple animals.
She switched on the flashlight.
A corridor stretched ahead.
Metal cages lined both walls.
Most were empty.
Three were occupied.
The first contained a rabbit.
The second contained a monkey.
The third contained a cat.
Mara's heart stopped.
“Nori.”
The cat lifted her head.
She was thin.
Her fur was patchy.
But alive.
Mara opened the cage.
Nori backed away.
Tiger began meowing from the carrier.
Nori froze.
Then she moved toward the sound.
Mara opened Tiger's carrier.
The orange cat stepped out.
He walked slowly toward Nori.
They touched noses through the bars.
Nori began purring.
Mara felt tears sting her eyes.
They recognized each other.
Not from a normal home.
From the laboratory.
From the shared history of survival.
Ben opened the other cages.
“Clover.”
The rabbit trembled.
Sam, the small monkey, clung to the bars.
Mara checked each animal.
All three were alive.
But something was wrong.
Their eyes were unusually alert.
They reacted to sounds before people made them.
Helen examined the records attached to the cages.
“They've been testing them again.”
Mara's jaw tightened.
“When?”
“Recently.”
“How recently?”
“Two weeks.”
The company had restarted the experiments.
Not in the laboratory.
Here.
Hidden.
Mara photographed everything.
Then she saw the fourth cage.
Empty.
The nameplate read T-13.
Jasper.
“Where is the dog?”
Helen looked around.
“Maybe transferred.”
Mara shook her head.
“There's fresh bedding.”
Ben examined the floor.
A leash mark crossed the concrete.
“He was here.”
A door slammed somewhere above them.
Everyone froze.
Footsteps.
The scarred man called down the corridor.
“You shouldn't have come.”
Ben raised his phone.
“I've already sent the location.”
The man laughed.
“To whom?”
“The sheriff.”
“That won't help.”
Mara stepped forward.
“Where is Jasper?”
The man looked at her.
“You're more interested in the animals than your own safety.”
“Yes.”
“Then you understand why Daniel failed.”
Mara's voice sharpened.
“Where is he?”
The man smiled.
“Still alive.”
Eli stepped forward.
“Where?”
The man looked at him.
Then his expression changed.
“You're Daniel's son.”
Eli did not move.
The man turned to Mara.
“You brought him.”
“He came because he wants his father.”
The man shook his head.
“You don't understand what Daniel did.”
“He exposed you.”
“He betrayed his employer.”
“You hurt him.”
“We protected the research.”
“By hiding animals?”
“By preventing valuable information from disappearing.”
Mara looked at Tiger.
“That's what you call this?”
The man gestured toward the cages.
“They are evidence.”
“No.”
Mara's voice was quiet.
“They are animals.”
The man stared at her.
For the first time, his confidence faltered.
Ben moved closer.
“You're surrounded.”
The man laughed again.
Then a siren sounded in the distance.
He turned.
Mara saw the instant he decided to run.
He disappeared through a side door.
Ben chased him.
Mara stayed.
She freed the animals.
Nori refused to leave Tiger.
Clover trembled against Helen's coat.
Sam clung to Ben when he returned.
Jasper was still missing.
Mara searched the room.
She found a transport manifest.
Jasper had been transferred that morning.
Destination:
East Ridge.
The abandoned research facility.
Mara stared at the paper.
“Why would they move him there?”
Helen's face went pale.
“Because the old laboratory has something the warehouse doesn't.”
“What?”
“The original treatment equipment.”
Mara looked toward Tiger.
The cat had stopped beside the door.
He stared into the darkness beyond.
Then he began scratching.
Three times.
Mara followed him.
The door opened into a narrow stairwell.
At the bottom was another room.
Inside was a wall covered with photographs.
All five animals.
But another photograph sat in the center.
Daniel.
He was standing beside Jasper.
And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
“Subject T-13 shows the same memory response.”
Mara felt the pieces lock together.
The company had not been searching randomly.
They were looking for animals whose memories had survived the treatment.
Tiger.
Nori.
Clover.
Sam.
Jasper.
The five survivors.
Daniel had discovered them.
The company had recaptured them.
Then Daniel had escaped with Nori.
Mara turned to Helen.
“Why did they want them together?”
Helen looked at the photographs.
“Because their genetic profiles might explain why they survived.”
“So they were going to repeat the experiment.”
“Yes.”
A sound came from upstairs.
Someone shouted.
“Police!”
The scarred man had escaped.
But the investigators had arrived.
Mara secured the animals.
The county officers entered.
For the first time, the hidden facility was no longer hidden.
Boxes were seized.
Computers were removed.
The cages were photographed.
The treatment records were secured.
Mara stood in the center of the room.
They had found four animals.
But Jasper was still missing.
Then Tiger walked toward the wall.
He stopped beneath Daniel's photograph.
Mara noticed a small mark on the floor.
A line of scratches.
They pointed toward the exit.
She followed them outside.
Across the road stood the old East Ridge facility.
Its windows were dark.
But one light glowed on the upper floor.
Ben joined her.
“You think Jasper is there.”
“Yes.”
“Then we go with the officers.”
Mara looked at the building.
She remembered Daniel's warning.
Don't bring Tiger to the warehouse.
Now she understood.
Daniel had not been warning them about the warehouse itself.
He had been warning them because the warehouse was only a decoy.
The real operation remained at East Ridge.
And someone had just turned on the lights.
