PART 5: 👇
His expression changed.
He looked at James.
“You haven’t told her?”
My blood turned cold.
“Told me what?”
James said:
“Don’t.”
But the man ignored him.
He reached into his coat and pulled out a folded document.
Then he handed it to me.
It was a copy of a birth certificate.
The newborn baby’s birth certificate.
Rebecca’s name was listed as the mother.
But the space for the father wasn’t blank anymore.
There was a name.
I read it.
Then looked at the man standing in front of me.
My hands started shaking.
Because I knew his name.
And suddenly, I understood why James had been terrified for me to read Rebecca’s letter.
I looked at my husband.
“You knew?”
James couldn’t answer.
“You knew who the father was?”
His silence was enough.
Then the man said something that made everything even worse.
“There’s another thing Rebecca never got the chance to tell you.”
I looked at him.
He pointed toward the hospital room.
“That baby’s name isn’t what James thinks it is.”
I stared through the glass at the tiny girl.
“What is her name?”
The man swallowed.
Then quietly said:
“Clara.”
My heart stopped.
Nobody outside my immediate family knew that name.
Nobody.
It was the name of the daughter I had once dreamed of having.
The daughter doctors told me I could never safely carry.
I turned slowly toward James.
“How did Rebecca know?”
He didn’t answer.
The man beside me did.
“Because Rebecca didn’t choose that name.”
I looked at him.
“Then who did?”
His eyes moved toward James.
And James began to cry.
The man whispered:
“Your husband did.”
I stared at James.
And suddenly the newborn behind that glass wasn’t simply Rebecca’s daughter anymore.
There was another secret connecting that baby to my husband.
One Rebecca had taken almost to her grave.
And when James finally looked at me, he said the words that made my knees nearly give out.
“Emily… before you decide whether we take Clara home, you need to know why Rebecca really had her.”
And that was when I realized the most important question wasn’t who Clara’s father was.
It was why my husband had known about this baby long before that Tuesday phone call.
