The cemetery was almost empty when they arrived.
Wind moved through the bare branches overhead, carrying the smell of wet earth. Daniel parked beside a stone wall and remained behind the wheel.
Victor got out first.
Sophie followed.
Marianne hesitated.
"Do you know where it is?" Sophie asked.
Victor nodded.
"I haven't been here since the funeral."
"Whose funeral?"
"Our father's."
They walked between rows of dark headstones.
Daniel followed several paces behind.
Sophie noticed that he kept looking at Victor.
Not with hatred.
Something older.
Regret.
They reached a weathered stone bearing the name Samuel Hale.
Victor knelt.
His hands shook as he brushed leaves away.
"There."
A narrow metal plate had been fixed beneath the stone.
614.
He removed a key from his pocket.
It fit.
The plate opened.
Inside was a small compartment.
There was no money.
No jewelry.
Only a sealed envelope.
Sophie took it.
Her name was written across the front.
She looked at Daniel.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"That's becoming your favorite answer."
He lowered his head.
She opened the envelope.
The letter inside was from Samuel.
My granddaughter,
If you are reading this, the people around you have finally stopped protecting you from the truth.
Sophie read on.
Your father was not the man you were told he was. Neither was I.
She stopped.
Marianne whispered, "Keep reading."
The letter described the original property scheme.
Samuel had helped establish the trust.
Later, he had betrayed it.
He had accepted money from developers.
Victor had followed him.
Daniel had tried to expose him.
But there was another secret.
Samuel had never trusted Victor.
He had used Victor as a shield.
The payments had been made through Victor's name.
The actual beneficiary was Eleanor.
Sophie looked up.
"Eleanor."
Marianne nodded.
"She knew."
Victor stood.
"I knew she was involved."
"You still protected her."
"I was trying to protect you."
Sophie turned on him.
"Stop saying that."
Victor flinched.
"I'm sorry."
The letter continued.
Samuel had transferred the original deed into the trust before his death.
But he had hidden the final page because Eleanor intended to reclaim the land.
The page named every person involved.
And one name appeared twice.
Eleanor Hale.
Richard Hale.
Sophie frowned.
"Who is Richard?"
Victor's face tightened.
"My father."
"Samuel?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Victor stared at Daniel.
"Your father's father."
Sophie looked confused.
Daniel finally spoke.
"Samuel wasn't my father."
She stared.
"What?"
"My father was Richard Hale."
"Then why did you call Samuel your father?"
"Because he raised me."
Sophie laughed in disbelief.
"How many fathers are there in this family?"
Nobody answered.
Daniel continued.
"Richard was Eleanor's brother."
Sophie looked at the letter.
"So Victor and Eleanor…"
"Are related."
"Yes."
"And you?"
"Richard's son."
She rubbed her forehead.
"This family is impossible."
Marianne gave a tired smile.
"That is the first thing you've said tonight that I completely agree with."
They returned to the truck.
But Sophie did not get in.
She stood beside the cemetery wall.
"I need the truth about my birth."
Victor looked at her.
"You deserve it."
"Then tell me."
He swallowed.
"Your mother and I had a relationship before she married Daniel."
Marianne closed her eyes.
"It lasted six months."
"I was not proud of it."
"But I was born."
"Yes."
"Did you want me?"
Victor looked at her.
"Yes."
Sophie waited.
"But I wasn't capable of being your father."
"Because of Eleanor?"
"Because of myself."
He explained that Eleanor had controlled him through money, property, and threats.
When Marianne became pregnant, Eleanor demanded that Victor deny the child.
Daniel chose to raise Sophie.
Victor accepted.
"Why?"
"Because I thought staying away would protect you."
Sophie stared at him.
"You all made the same choice."
Victor nodded.
"And every one of us was wrong."
Daniel stepped closer.
"I never regretted raising you."
"I know."
"That doesn't mean I should have hidden the truth."
"No."
He nodded.
"I'm sorry."
Sophie looked at him.
"I don't know what to call you."
"You don't have to decide."
That answer mattered more than he knew.
They returned to the lake house.
Eleanor was gone.
The front door stood open.
Inside, the leather folder remained on the table.
The missing page was gone.
Marianne searched the rooms.
"She took it."
Daniel examined the floor.
"No."
"What?"
"She left it."
He pointed toward the fireplace.
A sheet of paper had been tucked beneath the grate.
Sophie pulled it free.
It was the missing page.
But only part of it remained.
The bottom had been burned away.
Victor cursed.
"She destroyed the names."
Sophie looked closely.
"Not all of them."
Several signatures were visible.
Eleanor Hale.
Richard Hale.
Victor Hale.
And one more.
Marianne froze.
"What's wrong?"
She pointed.
The final signature belonged to someone named Thomas Reed.
Sophie frowned.
"Who is that?"
Daniel stared at the paper.
"I don't know."
Victor looked frightened.
"Neither do I."
Marianne stepped backward.
"I do."
Everyone turned.
She sat down.
"Thomas Reed was my father."
Sophie stared.
"Your father?"
Marianne nodded.
"He died when I was eighteen."
"But the name is on the document."
"Then he didn't die when I thought."
The room fell silent.
Daniel picked up the page.
"This changes everything."
Sophie looked at him.
"How?"
"The person who controlled the original scheme may not have been Eleanor."
Victor shook his head.
"Eleanor worked for someone."
"Who?"
Marianne looked toward the dark window.
"My father."
Sophie felt the room tilt.
"But he died."
Marianne whispered, "Apparently he didn't."
A car engine sounded outside.
Everyone turned toward the driveway.
A black sedan stopped.
A man stepped out.
He was old.
He used a cane.
And when he lifted his face toward the house, Marianne recognized him.
Her father.
Thomas Reed.
