PART 2: 👇
Trevor stood completely still.
His suitcase lay on its side near the front door, one wheel still slowly spinning.
And standing in the doorway between our kitchen and living room was the last person he expected to see.
His father.
Richard.
Trevor hadn’t spoken to him properly in almost two years.
Not since Richard had called him out at a family dinner for disappearing whenever responsibility became inconvenient.
Trevor had spent the drive home imagining newborn cuddles, photographs, congratulations, and maybe an apology from me for being “too emotional” about his vacation.
Instead, his father was standing in our house wearing an old gray sweatshirt, holding one of our daughter’s tiny bottles.
Trevor stared at him.
“What are you doing here?”
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
He walked toward the sink, set the bottle down, and wiped his hands on a dish towel.
Then he looked directly at his son.
“Doing your job.”
The words landed like a slap.
Trevor’s face tightened.
“Grace called you?”
“I did,” I said.
His eyes snapped toward me.
“Why?”
For a second, I genuinely didn’t know how to answer.
Maybe because I had just undergone major surgery.
Maybe because I had two newborn babies who needed feeding every few hours.
Maybe because standing upright felt like someone was pulling stitches through my abdomen.
Maybe because my husband had chosen a beach chair over the birth of his own children.
Instead, I simply said:
“Because I needed help.”
Trevor threw his hands up.
“You could’ve called my mom.”
“I needed someone who would actually come.”
Richard’s expression changed slightly.
Trevor noticed.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Richard stepped forward.
“It means when Grace called me from the hospital, she could barely speak.”
Trevor looked at me.
I looked away.
Richard continued.
“She wasn’t calling to complain about you. She wasn’t asking me to yell at you. She asked if I could pick up groceries.”
Trevor said nothing.
“So I came.”
Richard pointed toward the hallway.
