PART 4 – Anna Finally Stood Face to Face With the Sister She Had Lost as a Baby, but Their First Conversation Revealed a Deeper Betrayal

Anna crossed the street carrying Noah against her chest.

Daniel followed closely.

Thomas stayed several steps behind them, watching the parked car at the end of the block.

Claire remained at Anna's house, calling the police.

The neighboring house looked ordinary.

White curtains.

Small flowerpots.

A bicycle leaning against the porch.

Nothing about it suggested that the woman living inside might be Anna's missing twin.

Anna knocked.

No answer.

She knocked again.

A voice came from inside.

“Who is it?”

Anna couldn't speak.

Daniel answered.

“It's Anna.”

Silence.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

The woman standing there looked at Anna.

Neither moved.

Her eyes dropped to Noah.

Then returned to Anna's face.

“You found me.”

Anna's throat tightened.

“Elise?”

The woman nodded.

“Yes.”

Anna began to cry.

Not loudly.

The tears simply came.

Elise opened the door wider.

“Come inside.”

Anna stepped over the threshold.

The house smelled faintly of coffee and old books. Family photographs covered one wall, but none showed parents or siblings. There were landscapes, school pictures, and photographs of Elise alone at different ages.

Anna looked at them.

“You knew?”

“I found out five years ago.”

“About me?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you contact me?”

Elise looked toward the window.

“Because someone told me you would be killed if I did.”

Anna looked at Daniel.

He lowered his eyes.

“Who told you?”

“Your father.”

Anna closed her eyes.

Again, protection.

Again, silence.

Again, decisions made without her.

Elise approached.

“I wanted to meet you.”

“Then why didn't you?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Anna looked at her.

“So was I.”

Elise smiled sadly.

“I know.”

Noah stirred.

Elise reached out but stopped before touching him.

“May I?”

Anna hesitated.

Then she placed Noah carefully in Elise's arms.

The baby looked up at her.

Elise's expression broke.

“He has your eyes.”

Anna whispered, “We never had a chance.”

“No.”

They sat together.

For several minutes, neither knew what to say.

Then Elise looked at Daniel.

“You married her.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell her?”

“No.”

Elise's face hardened.

“Then you failed.”

Daniel accepted the accusation.

“I know.”

Anna looked between them.

“You both know more than you're saying.”

Elise took a breath.

“Your father didn't simply hide me.”

“What did he do?”

“He changed my identity.”

Anna stared.

“Why?”

“To keep Reed from finding me.”

“But Reed knew about the twins.”

“He knew one child had survived.”

“Which child?”

Elise looked directly at Anna.

“He thought it was me.”

Anna finally understood.

“That's why my records were changed.”

“Yes.”

“And my sister became someone else.”

“Yes.”

“Then why is Noah's birth record connected to mine?”

Elise's expression changed.

“Because Reed started again.”

Anna held Noah closer.

“He was looking for another child.”

“No,” Elise said.

“He was looking for you.”

Anna froze.

“Me?”

“Your DNA.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Reed wanted proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That the child from the original records and the woman living under your current name were the same person.”

Anna shook her head.

“I don't understand.”

Elise pointed toward Noah.

“Your son's birth created a new medical record. Reed saw an opportunity to compare your DNA with the old records.”

Anna stared.

“So the baby was never the reason.”

“He was the key.”

Daniel said quietly, “That's why someone contaminated the laundry sink.”

Anna turned.

“You knew about that?”

“No.”

Thomas appeared at the doorway.

“You did it to scare her out of the house.”

Anna looked at him.

“Who?”

Thomas's face was grim.

“Me.”

Silence.

Anna stared.

“You put the dirty water in the sink?”

“I needed you to find the cabinet.”

“You could have hurt Noah.”

“I didn't know he would be there.”

Anna's face hardened.

“That doesn't excuse it.”

“No.”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I made a terrible choice.”

Elise looked at him.

“You almost ruined everything.”

Thomas nodded.

“I know.”

Anna turned toward Daniel.

“And you?”

He swallowed.

“I knew Thomas was trying to force the truth into the open.”

“You let him?”

“I couldn't stop him.”

“You could have told me.”

“Yes.”

Anna shook her head.

She was exhausted.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

She had spent one night discovering that her family had hidden an entire branch of her life.

The police sirens sounded outside.

Thomas looked through the window.

Dr. Reed's car was gone.

But a second vehicle had arrived.

Officers moved toward the neighboring house.

One officer entered and spoke quietly to Elise.

“Are you Elise Carter?”

“Yes.”

“You're going to need to come with us.”

Anna stepped forward.

“Why?”

The officer looked at the documents.

“Because your identity appears in several disputed medical records connected to an ongoing investigation.”

Elise nodded.

“I expected this.”

Anna looked at her.

“Are you in trouble?”

“No.”

“Then why are they taking you?”

“To give a statement.”

Elise touched Anna's hand.

“Stay with your son.”

Anna squeezed her fingers.

“I just found you.”

Elise smiled.

“You won't lose me again.”

The officer led Elise outside.

Anna stood in the doorway watching her sister walk away.

Daniel came beside her.

“I am sorry.”

Anna didn't look at him.

“You should be.”

“I know.”

“You don't get to decide what I need to know anymore.”

“I won't.”

She looked at him then.

“And if there is one more secret?”

“There isn't.”

Anna's expression said she didn't believe him.

Daniel nodded.

“Then I'll prove it.”

Thomas remained across the street.

He held the old photograph in one hand.

Anna walked toward him.

“You endangered my baby.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you simply tell me?”

“Because I thought you'd never believe me.”

“You were wrong.”

Thomas looked down.

“I've been wrong for twenty years.”

Anna studied him.

“You're still my brother.”

He looked up.

She wasn't smiling.

But she wasn't turning away either.

The police took Thomas into custody to give his statement about the clinic and the records.

By dawn, the street was filled with quiet movement.

Officers carried boxes from the house.

The old hospital documents were photographed.

The hidden records were secured.

And Anna finally understood why the laundry room had become the center of everything.

The cabinet had never been about cleaning supplies.

It had been a hiding place for the history her family had spent decades trying to bury.

When Anna returned home, the house was strangely quiet.

Noah was sleeping in his crib.

She stood beside him and watched his tiny chest rise and fall.

Daniel entered the room.

“We should talk.”

“Yes.”

He sat on the edge of the bed.

“I didn't marry you because your father asked me to.”

Anna looked at him.

“That isn't what you said before.”

“I married you because I loved you.”

She waited.

“But your father told me about Elise after we were already together.”

Anna's expression softened slightly.

“Why didn't you tell me then?”

“Because Reed was still searching.”

“And now?”

“Now the records are in police custody.”

Anna looked at Noah.

“What happens to us?”

Daniel answered honestly.

“I don't know.”

For the first time that night, Anna believed him.

She picked up her son.

Noah opened his eyes.

Anna kissed his forehead.

Outside, the sun began to rise over the street.

Across the road, Elise's house stood with its front door open.

For twenty-two years, Anna had lived believing she was an only child.

Now there was a woman on the other side of the street who shared her face, her birthday, and half of her history.

But one question remained unanswered.

Anna looked at the hospital record lying on the table.

At the bottom of the page was a signature.

Not her father's.

Not Dr. Reed's.

Not Daniel's.

A woman's.

Claire's.

Anna stared at it.

Then she slowly looked toward the laundry room.

The one person who had claimed to be afraid of the truth had signed the original document.
