NOTE: This part uncovers the hidden basement room and the surveillance photographs, while Daniel and Claire learn that the fire was carefully planned and Ethan may have unknowingly discovered the reason.
The basement door had always been locked.
Claire remembered that clearly.
Daniel had used it for storage, but he rarely went downstairs. Their old house had been built decades earlier, and the basement was cold, unfinished, and unpleasant. They had joked that it was the perfect place for spiders to live because neither of them wanted to go there.
Now firefighters had discovered a hidden room behind a false wall.
Detective Harris took Daniel and Claire aside.
“You shouldn't go down there.”
Daniel looked at him.
“My family lived above it.”
“I understand.”
“No. I need to know who was there.”
Harris nodded.
“We'll tell you what we can.”
The basement smelled of wet concrete and smoke.
The hidden room was small.
There was a mattress on the floor.
A portable heater.
Several empty food containers.
A battery-powered lamp.
And photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Claire covered her mouth.
They were all photographs of the house.
The kitchen.
The living room.
The backyard.
The upstairs hallway.
Ethan's bedroom.
Claire and Daniel leaving for work.
Ethan playing outside.
Daniel repairing the fence.
Claire carrying groceries.
Some photographs had dates written on the back.
The earliest was six months old.
Claire felt sick.
“He was watching us.”
Harris nodded.
“It appears so.”
Daniel picked up a photograph of Ethan.
His son was sitting on the front steps.
The date was three months earlier.
“How did we never see him?”
“We don't know.”
Claire looked around.
“How did he get in?”
“There may be a second entrance.”
They found it behind the old furnace.
A narrow passage led beneath the backyard.
It opened near the neighbor's property.
The person had been entering unseen.
Daniel's hands tightened.
“Could he still be nearby?”
Harris answered carefully.
“We're looking.”
Claire looked at Ethan, who was waiting upstairs with a neighbor.
“Why us?”
That question became the center of the investigation.
The photographs didn't explain it.
Neither did the metal box.
But one photograph did.
It showed Ethan standing in his bedroom.
He was holding a small wooden object.
Claire recognized it.
“That's the old key.”
Daniel looked closer.
The key in the photograph was different from the one found in the box.
“Where did he get that?”
Claire remembered.
Ethan had found it in the garden.
Months earlier.
He had brought it home.
Daniel had told him to put it in a drawer.
The key had disappeared.
They had forgotten about it.
Detective Harris asked:
“Where exactly did he find it?”
“In the backyard.”
They searched the garden.
Near the old apple tree, they found disturbed soil.
Something had been buried there.
A small metal cylinder.
Inside was a rolled piece of paper.
The paper contained a map.
The map showed the neighborhood.
One house was circled.
Not theirs.
The house next door.
Claire stared.
“Why would someone be watching our neighbor?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.”
The neighbor, Mr. Lawson, was an elderly man who lived alone.
Police questioned him.
He seemed confused.
“I haven't done anything.”
Harris asked whether anyone had been using his property.
Lawson shook his head.
“No.”
Then he remembered something.
“A man asked me about the old drainage tunnel.”
“What man?”
“I don't know his name.”
“When?”
“Several months ago.”
“What did he look like?”
Lawson thought.
“Gray shirt.”
Claire and Daniel exchanged a glance.
Ethan had described the same clothing.
Harris asked:
“What did he want?”
Lawson pointed toward the backyard.
“He asked about the old house.”
“What house?”
“Yours.”
Daniel felt the tension return.
“Why?”
Lawson shook his head.
“He said there was something buried under it.”
The police searched the old property records.
The house had once belonged to a company.
The company had closed decades earlier.
But one unusual fact appeared.
The basement had been built over an older foundation.
That foundation belonged to a structure that had once served as a private archive.
Daniel didn't understand.
“Archive of what?”
Harris showed him the records.
“Business documents.”
“Whose?”
“Several local businesses.”
One name appeared repeatedly.
Gray.
Elliot Gray's father.
Daniel stared.
The connection was becoming impossible to ignore.
But Elliot had been arrested.
He was already in custody.
So who had been hiding beneath the house?
The police searched the old company records.
They found references to a missing ledger.
A ledger that contained evidence of financial fraud.
The ledger had disappeared thirty years earlier.
The person who found it could potentially expose several families.
Claire asked:
“Could that be why someone came into our house?”
“Possibly.”
“Why Ethan's room?”
Harris looked at her.
“Maybe because someone believed your son had found something.”
Claire remembered the key.
Ethan had found it months earlier.
“What if the key opened something?”
They searched the house.
The key from the photograph was missing.
Then Ethan spoke.
“I know where it is.”
Everyone turned.
He pointed toward the old fireplace.
“I put it there.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I thought it was treasure.”
Claire almost laughed from relief.
“Where?”
Ethan pointed beneath the hearth.
They moved a loose stone.
Behind it was a small opening.
Inside was the missing key.
And another object.
A tiny memory card.
Harris stared.
“That's what they were looking for.”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Did you put this here?”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
The memory card contained video.
They played it on a police computer.
The first recording showed the basement.
The hidden man appeared.
He was wearing a gray shirt.
His face was partly covered.
He placed documents into a box.
Then another person entered.
A woman.
Claire didn't recognize her.
Daniel did.
He went pale.
“That's impossible.”
Harris looked at him.
“Who is she?”
“My sister.”
Claire stared.
“You never told me you had a sister.”
“She died when I was ten.”
The video showed the woman turning toward the camera.
She looked directly into it.
Then she said:
“Daniel, if you're watching this, don't trust the man who says the fire was an accident.”
The video ended.
Claire looked at her husband.
“Daniel…”
He couldn't answer.
His sister had supposedly died twenty-seven years earlier.
Yet she had appeared in a recording from six months ago.
Harris asked:
“Are you certain?”
Daniel nodded.
“I know her.”
“What's her name?”
“Rebecca.”
Claire looked at the screen.
“Could it be someone else?”
“No.”
Daniel's voice broke.
“That is my sister.”
The next file contained another recording.
Rebecca was sitting in a room somewhere.
She looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
She spoke directly to the camera.
“I know what they did.”
Claire leaned closer.
Rebecca continued.
“They didn't kill me.”
Daniel froze.
The recording stopped.
No one spoke.
Then the final file opened automatically.
A date appeared.
Tomorrow.
A location.
The old railway station.
And one sentence.
COME ALONE, DANIEL.
Harris immediately closed the screen.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“My sister is alive.”
“We don't know that yet.”
“I saw her.”
“You saw a recording.”
“I have to go.”
Harris shook his head.
“If someone wants you alone, that's exactly what you shouldn't do.”
Claire touched Daniel's arm.
“He's right.”
Daniel looked at her.
“But if Rebecca is alive…”
“We'll find her.”
The next morning, the police prepared a controlled operation.
Daniel would go to the station.
Officers would watch from a distance.
Claire and Ethan would remain in protective custody.
But just before Daniel left, Ethan approached him.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“The man in the video.”
“What about him?”
“He wasn't alone.”
Daniel crouched.
“Who was with him?”
Ethan pointed toward the driveway.
A gray car was parked there.
“The woman.”
Daniel looked outside.
The vehicle drove away.
Harris ran toward the window.
“Get the plate!”
An officer shouted the number.
They checked it.
The registration belonged to Rebecca.
Daniel's face went white.
His sister was alive.
And she was already watching them.
