The Marks on My Nephew’s Skin Exposed a Secret Our Family Hid for Decades

PART 6 — THE TRUTH IN THE HOSPITAL

The doctor finally came to speak with us.

My nephew was safe.

There were no signs that the marks were caused by infection.

The doctor explained that they appeared consistent with a benign type of birthmark.

I asked whether they could spread from person to person.

“No,” she said.

“Could they be contagious?”

“No.”

“Could washing them aggressively damage a newborn?”

“Absolutely.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

My brother had nearly killed his own son because of something harmless.

The doctor studied me.

“Is there a family history?”

“Yes.”

I showed her the photographs.

She examined them carefully.

“These look similar.”

“So there is nothing unusual?”

“Not based on these photographs.”

The relief was overwhelming.

But then the doctor asked, “Why was the baby exposed to extreme heat?”

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Finally I said, “His father believed the marks were dangerous.”

The doctor became very serious.

“That belief needs to be addressed.”

“I know.”

My brother remained in police custody.

The investigation continued.

But the family story was changing.

What had seemed like an act of sudden madness now had a history.

My brother had grown up believing he was protecting us.

He had been taught fear by our father.

Our father had learned it from his own father.

And somehow, generation after generation, nobody had stopped it.

Except now there was a child.

A child who couldn’t defend himself.

I went to see my brother.

He was sitting behind a glass partition.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, “I thought I was saving him.”

“You almost killed him.”

“I know.”

“You held him over boiling water.”

His face crumpled.

“I was terrified.”

“You should have called a doctor.”

“I thought the doctors wouldn’t understand.”

“Because Dad told you they wouldn’t.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

I put the family photographs on the table between us.

“You knew these were fake?”

“I knew some of them were.”

“Some?”

“Dad showed me real photographs and then told me things that weren’t true.”

“Why didn’t you ask someone?”

“I was six.”

“You’re not six anymore.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Then he whispered:

“I saw your marks when I was a child. Dad told me they were spreading.”

“They never spread.”

“I know that now.”

“Then why didn’t you know when your son was born?”

“Because when I saw them, everything Dad had taught me came back.”

I stared at him.

He began crying.

“I heard him screaming, and I thought if I didn’t remove the marks, I’d lose him.”

“You nearly lost him because of them.”

“I know.”

For the first time, my brother seemed to understand the full weight of what he had done.
